hobby breeder I have been swamped with nasty calls about being a "backyard breeder." How do I deal with these unkind people? I would prefer a puppy with a backyard to run in rather than one shut up in a kennel for 10 weeks! I work hard to crate train, doggie door train, and potty train my two boys. I am appalled that people would call and feign wanting to buy a puppy and then badmouth me over the phone. all my girls and studs are AKC registered and live in a good home. They are not just "puppy milled" - they are members of the family. They do not live in a 2' by 3' crate 24 hours a day. They have the run of a 2000 sq. ft. home and an 8000 sq ft yard. I hope other hobby breeders do not have to deal with the unkindness of others who think we are in it for the money. With all the money I've spent on my babies, I'll barely break even - I'm totally non-profit. I just wanted my girls to experience being a mommy. I know a lot of people who are unkind and snobby to home breeders. As long as the puppies are being well taken care of and are being bred at the standards for health & whatnot then you can tell them to shove it! LOL! I'm sure you take great care of your babies & that's all that matters! |
Not sure what to tell you but I just wanted to say I am sorry people are being mean. I know a lot of people don't like the hobby breeders but I dont' see much wrong if your breeding to standard and testing your babies. |

My grandfather always said, water on a duck's back.... where are these calls coming from.... members from here.... I will say the breeding community in general is hard to break into and stay in.... It can be a very touchy place and you have to be very diplomatic.... My advise.... be careful how you word the reasons why you are a breeder. Also, just as you do not want breeders knocking you, be careful not to knock those who do kennel raise. Remember, we all began somewhere... most of us in our homes and yards.... Unless one was raised in this business, I doubt anyone bashing you began with a 2,000 sq ft. kennel with cement runs, fully staffed. Keep your chin up and keep yourself above reproach... You need a very thick skin in this business, between other breeders, difficult buyers, and the reality of what "can" and will eventually happen with regard to your dogs... dont worry about the bad and enjoy what you are doing..... BTW.. It just rolls off.......;) |
I am fine with somebody being a hobby breeder, but I have such a problem with your statement - I just wanted my girls to experience being a mommy. That is not a good reason to breed and I will keep the rest of my opinions to myself. |

What is a "hobby" breeder really? To me that means breeding is a hobby, not a business, which is good I guess. But to me I think a hobby breeder could be a show breeder or a BYB...it's just someone who doesn't breed for profit. I don't see it as a separate breeder category in itself. I believe in breeding for only these reasons: to breed excellent examples of the breed (in health and conformation), to preserve the breed, and constantly strive to improve the breed. I only believe show-quality dogs should be bred (not that they necessarily have to be shown but that they have to be of that quality) and that they have to be 100% heathy. If a breeder isn't breeding quality dogs and isn't heath screening then to me they are a BYB (not saying you are or aren't one..don't know your breeding program or goals)..but that is how I personally feel |

that made a lot of sense.... Sorry, don't know what happened there... My computer illiteracy is certainly showing this morning.... Today is "grooming day" so I'm moving sloooooow. Anyway, the gist of my original post was..... I suggest Carrie read the tread http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=123065 about breeding for profit.... Has some great perspectives on breeding and such.... I can tell you from experience the expediential risks and strain on a female's body far out weighs "I want her to experience being a mommy" That's just not were you want to go with your kennel.... 1.) find a really reputable breeder willing to mentor you 2.) study study study(Malcom Willis is a great place to begin) 3.) develop a breeding plan 4.) develop a mission statement to give folks an idea of the reasons why you breed..... There are lots of types of kennels and lots of good reasons to breed..... |
I would not worry about who is calling you and why as long as YOU know that you are doing and breeding the best dogs keeping with the standard and trying to improve the breed ,have done all your testing etc, then you have nothing to worry about. |
i am sorry you are getting calls. I am also a small hobby breedeer. But there are people on here especially, that will call anyone that doesn't show, a backyard breeder. These people have never been to your home or seen your dogs and they are taken care of. All you can do is hold your head up high and keep doing what your doing if you are ddoing everything correct. You are the only one that knows your dogs unless people have been to your house and have seeen for themselves. I had some body on here give a bad review to a buyer on me the other day based on the fact that they don't like me based on my posts on here. What the heck do they know about my dogs or my program to tell someone I have "low Quality dogs. The only problem is that people would rather listen to gossip than do their own research. Fact of the matter, not everyone is going to like you and your ddogs. Let the naysayers do what they do best. Gossip!!!!!!!! |

NO ONE has a right to call you and slam you or bad mouth you just because they don't like something that you are doing (and it sounds like these people don't even "KNOW" you - so who in the heck are THEY to judge!) :mad: Anyway, I don't really have any wonderful advice for you or anything...but I can tell you that if you love your babies, and they are being well taken care of, then that is all that matters here :) There ARE going to be people you come across in life that totally disagree with the way you do things as far as breeding goes...but that will never change. I say that as long as you aren't breeding females that are 2 and 3 lbs, and as long as your dogs are vet checked and are healthy, then there is nothing wrong with being a "small hobby breeder". You just worry about YOU...let everyone else think and say what they want :) |
