I think the main problem with "backyard breeders" is they don't do the health screening that YTCA requires. If you don't do it you are a backyard breeder, if you indeed do it you are a hobby breeder. |

I just found this. |
I don't think the term backyard breeder is always as negative as it sounds. Not a breeder i would personally buy from, but I wouldn't say they are necessarily bad people or don't love their dogs. In fact, many of them love their dogs and breed their pets for various reasons...they do so as a hobby and not profit. The ones that do it for profit are in a whole other category, and yes, I feel that those breeders are bad people. No one should use breeding as a business. I don't agree with backyard breeding practices, and like I said, I wouldn't personally buy from one, but I don't think all backyard breeders are bad people. Quality of dogs is subject to opinion as every breed and even judge has their preferences, but with health screening and breeding healthy dogs - it's either being done or its not (that is a black and white issue to me). Anyway, I'm certainly not talking about any breeders in particular - just speaking in general. Everyone has their opinions on what a backyard breeder is and isn't - I and a few others I know just have a very narrow view of what a reputable breeder is. |

Good, but I don't think everything is either black or white. I think this should be a sort of middle category there; not your either this or your that. Doesn't always fit. |
May I ask, do you do health screening? That's really the important question. |
?? What is wrong with breeding for profit if you take good care of your dogs as well as pups? I dont mean puppymill profit.:( I mean yorkies are a beautiful breed, they are wanted by people and making extra money is nice. Im personally thinking of breeding . My husband and I are both home based missionaries to troubled teens in a residential setting and we would like our teenagers to be involoved. What a ministry! Dogs really have a way of ministering to people and teens without a purpose would love these little babies. Just my opinion. I love animals and have always wanted to raise my own dogs. |

I agree 100%. That's bull what is happening to you. chin up chin up! I had an AKC pup about 10 years ago, she was from a champion bloodline...then it turned out that she was actually the product of inbreeding and had all sorts of genetic problems that caused her to die a very very painful death. Since then we've been going to a non-AKC breeder who follows all the AKC guidelines, does everything right, and has produced now her 3rd and final HEALTHY litter. Our vet was ASTOUNDED at how healthy and what a good temprament our little babe has. We're going back to that breeder because she does everything RIGHT and doesn't value the things we don't obsess about (papers champions etc.). Our breeder is not a backyard-breeder who does it to show her kids the miracle of life. She's very good at what she does and stays abreast of how to do things properlyunder supervision of the vet. If you're doing everything right and your pups are healthy and guaranteed then you are a RESPONSIBLE breeder and that is, imho the most important thing. |

I am sorry that people are calling you too. Horrendous! Being the daughter of a "yorkie breeder" I've gained a little experience and knowledge over the past 16 years. There are people on here that will say mean things about you, in fact, they did about my mom's kennel. They've never met her, never talked to her, have never seen the beautiful kennel that my mom has built. This reminds me of a funny (but at the time terribly awful) story that happened to my mom a few years ago. This lady called up and was inquiring about a female puppy - my mom told her what she had available, the price was right, blah blah. She came out to visit and 'decided' she wanted the puppy. Well, she said that she was going to go to her car and get the money. My mom was like, okay, no problem. Well, it took her forever and when my mom walked outside to see what was up, she was snapping pictures of my mom's house and property! My mom asked what she was doing and she said that she was a volunteer for the aspca or something like that and was going to report her. She asked for what, she said that "you're a dog breeder, and all dog breeders are puppy mills" *What an ignorant thing to say to begin with.* That ticked her off, my mother is not a violent person and I have never seen her do anything at all --- but she ripped that camera out of her hands, said some choice words and told her to get off our property or she was calling the cops. She ended up having the call the cops because the lady wouldn't leave. THERE ARE NUTS! So just be careful. She had no basis for what she was doing. Our property is clean, as is the kennel, our house and our dogs. She is just a nut who thought she knew what she was doing, but of course she didn't. By the way, it turns out that this person is the wife of my husband's stomach doctor! :yelrotflm |
