I'm so worried!!! Today was the day that 6.5-month-old Lexi was scheduled for spaying and teeth removal. I emotionally worked myself into the right frame of mind, asked the vet all the right questions (and received the right answers), loving said "I'll see you later, I love you, be strong", and courageously drove myself to work (instead of staying at home and worrying all day). The vet called an hour later to inform me that the pre-anesthetic blood work showed high blood sugar and he is concerned with her kidneys, hence he didn't feel comfortable with doing the surgery today. He mentioned the number 11.8 and told me that the normal high is 10.3 (blood sugar, or something to do with her kidneys...I'm not sure since I was shocked by what he was telling me). They took more blood to be analyzed overnight and as I'm typing this I'm waiting to follow her around the yard with a little tray - for the third time - to get a urine sample. I'm so worried...I'm beside myself. Thanks for listening. I just had to get it off my chest. Here's to another sleepless night. :( |
I'm so sorry, I can imagine how worried you must be! Does Lexi act like anything is wrong with her?? Good luck! |
No, she acts like the psycho she's always been. She doesn't drink excessively or potty excessively. I keep praying that there's nothing wrong and it was just a "fluke". |
Well I wish you and Lexi luck. Be sure to let me know what the vet ends up saying. Brandi |
Gentle hugs to you and Lexi. I know you must be worried sick.......Higgins and I are thinking of you and saying a little prayer..... |
we will be thinking about you both and add a little night prayer. |
I'm sorry to hear that. Do you know if it was her BUN level? When Bentley got fix 2 months ago, his preliminary bloodwork showed a high BUN level that sometimes can signal a kidney problem. They were able to do more extensive testing to find that it was not a kidney problem and was likely from too much fat in his diet. They suggested we switch to adult food as puppy has a lot of fat and cut down on the treats (he was getting a lot of treats in puppy class). I'm hoping Lexi's is something similar and she will pull through just fine. |
So sorry Lexi, Toto sends you lots of puppy kisses! Hope today brings good news! We will keep you in our prayers! |
All I can say is that the fact that she isn't drinking excesively is GOOD! It may have be a one off - keep us informed - I sympathise as you'd geared yourself up to having her spayed but good that your vet didn't do it! |
Im so sorry to hear that Lexi is not doing well. Please keep us posted. I hope she is better soon. Marie and Gucci |
Oh! I hope everything comes out okay! Please let us know as soon as you know. Now I see why they asked me if I wanted the extra blood work done. Of course, I said yes. We are all hoping that Lexi will be okay! Good Luck! Say Bentley's Mom! Do you think it is time for my dog to go on adult food? She will be a year the 28th of this month. Can I mix the puppy food with adult food? I have over a half a bag of Science Diet yet. Don't like the thought of throwing it out! Pat |
I believe a year is normally the right time to do the switch, but you might want to call and check with your vet just to be sure. I wouldn't switch right over, but would gradually switch by mixing the two types of food. Start with 1/4 new food, then 1/2, then 3/4, until you are completely switched over. This will be better for their stomach and reduce the chances of diarreah. |
Thanks! Will ask my vet and probably start the switch. She isn't fat by a long shot, she is too active, I think to gain weight. |
Lexi's mom: hope everything turns out okay for your baby! I am really glad you got the bloodwork done ... a lot of people try to skip it thinking it's no big deal. I hope Lexi's just fine -- puppy kisses from our pack! |
Not sure if I did this right Hi....hope I did this right, newbie here.....hope your little one is ok. Have you gotten any results? Good luck, |

Another question I see you mentioned Nutrical. How long do you keep a yorkie on this. We do not have our 3 yr old on it and the pup gets it 3 times a day right now, but wondering if and when to cut him down and should our older one have some.....? Thanks, Jim |
I FINALLY got to talk to the vet- after frustratingly playing phone tag over the long weekend. Alexis' bloodwork came back and her electrolytes were normal!!! I still haven't been able to get a urine sample. You'll have to picture the story I'm about to tell, lol. All day Thursday I followed my very-well-potty-trained girl around the back yard with the tray that the vet supplied to collect her sample. Every time the poor girl squatted, I whipped that tray out. She IMMEDIATELY stopped! The tray was too wide! In I go on the hunt for another tool. The next day (after letting her pee without even looking at her-the poor girl!), I tried to use a margarine lid. Again, too wide. It scared the heck out of her and she would stop. Another search of the house turned up a cardboard lid from a velvet bracelet box. A lot more narrow than the tray and a little more narrow than the margarine lid. Same story. Stopped mid-pee. I came back in from the sub-zero weather, on the hunt again. This time I decided to use a plastic pop bottle lid. Well, the little darling squats close to the ground and I couldn't even get my hand in there! I am now the queen of hunting for small, short objects (cleaned out my cupboards in my searches!). This time I turned up a film container lid. Haven't had the chance to try it as I just got home from work. I talked to the receptionist at the vet's when I was at work today and explained my dilemma. She suggested putting down Saran Wrap! Can you imagine how much Saran Wrap it would take to cover my 55' backyard? "Do they sell it in wider widths?", I asked. She chuckled. I've been having dreams of giving him my OWN sample just to get it over with! Am I alone? How do YOU get your little girl to pee into a foreign object (assuming that she's an outside trained dog?) I have a few more funnies to share, but know that this post is long enough. Back to pee patrol... |
That is too funny! I hope I never have to go through that! What a lark! I wonder, do you have a baby play pen that maybe you could put her in with plastic sheeting, or something? I imigine you would have to put it outside because like mine, she is potty trained to go outside. It's just a thought! Pat |
Lexi's Mom ... that is soooo funny!! I can just picture it!! Toto is the same way .... if anything moves near her when she is going ... she immediately freezes up!! Sounds like you have about exhausted all your "options"! Good luck! ;) |
Saran Wrap sure does work for "collecting"........Here's one for ya: When my oldest son was about 5 years old, he accidentally swallowed a silver friendship ring. When I called the doctor, he told me that I would need to check his bowel movements to make sure that the ring passed through him alright. AAAAAaaaaarrrrrrrghhhh. Kid was so upset he couldn't poop for three days on the little kids potty I gave him. Saran Wrap to the rescue! I cut a nice big sheet of it and floated it in the toilet, letting it cling to the sides. Then all I had to do was gather up the 4 corners and, ah, feel around from the outside for the ring. Not pleasant. After a week, we had to x-ray.....and then again a week later.....another x-ray to show the ring progressing every so slowly. FINALLY! Now I tell you this awful story (more than you wanted to know), but the Saran really does kind of disappear and children and dogs don't realize it's there. Maybe you could tape some on top of a pee pad (I'd cover the whole pad), and leave her alone in a bathroom or exercise pen in the yard? |
that is funny. I have this in my visions and trying to look at it as if I were a neighbor thinking you are one clean lady to follow your baby around the yard to collect. my brother had a dog that was diabetic and had to have his urine tested twice a day. but they just used a testing strip to collect it. how much does the vet need? |
The vet can do testing on as little as one teaspoon. We had snow yesterday so I wasn't able to get a sample. I'm really getting frustrated! She doesn't use pee pads (chews 'em up) or a crate/pen. She has full run of the house since she's so well potty trained! |
Nutrical I use on my pups until they are about 6 months, and then I just keep a tube of it on hand for emergencies. I always have some in the house. As for the urine samples, I put the saran or plastic wrap on the pee pads mine use and it collects on that. |
I am so sorry you have worried so much and can truly understand though. Please let us all know what happens.... There are a lot of prayers out there hoping for the best. Let us know, |
hypoglycemia emergency! my applogizies for interupting your thread, but my wife and i just bought a yourkie two days ago and brought him home w/ us. he did well the first night, drank water and had some food then went to bed. he awoke the next morn in an excited state; however last night it took him ahwile to go to sleep and this morning we had to rush him to the vet where they have him on an iv drip and are monitoring him. my wife is frantic and can't stop crying and i'm finding it very difficult to stay calm for the both of us. i need to know what the blood/sugar level for these delicate creatures should be? we have the nutrical but what else can be done in order to avoid this while we're sleeping? any help would be a god-send! |
This thread is over a year old..you might some more answers if you post a new one..get well soon to your baby! I hope he's ok! |
remission! its amazing how much one can look past when you're borderline hysterical. my wife just called and the vet has issued a positive prognosis. the insulin has payed off and we'll be able to pick him up in an hour or so...much to our relief! thank you all for your help and thoughts! i'll have to get some pictures of our little guy when he's well enough. |
