How do you politely tell someone that there NO SUCH THING as a teacup Yorkie?! People at the dog park ask me all the time if Franklin is a Yorkie. After I say yes, they say "is he a teacup?" First of all, obviously not! My big boy is 7 lbs. Second of all, there is no such thing. Well, most people are just simply curious and they're very nice about asking me. I don't want to jump all over them correcting them. So how are we supposed to inform them that there is no such thing? Some girl told me today that her girlfriend had tiny teacups or something like that. I just politely smiled and said "oh really? How nice." She then told me that she'd never seen a Yorkie as big as Franklin. She wasn't being malicious or mean, she was just misinformed. I didn't say anything.. Ugh. |
To be honest unless it is someone asking my advice hoping to purchase a yorkie....I said nothing and think.... &*@)! idiot...but I smile. :) |
i just smile. i don't want to start trouble with people at the dog park. most are just trying to have a "light" conversation. |
Yeah that's what I usually do........ there's no reason to be mean or rude but I hate hate hate the term "tiny teacup". :thumbdown |
Someone asked me that about Peyton when we were in a pet store because he's 1 1/2lbs... I told them he was 3 months old and he'd probably be around 3 1/2lbs.. The lady then said, "He's a teacup then, right?".. I said no, there is no such thing.. And she huffed and walked away... *shrug* can't please them all.. |
Lilly my little rescue is 9 months old and she's 4 lbs. but her frame makes her look even smaller then that. I am constantly being asked if she is a Tea Cup. I usually try to educate by saying "Well there is really no such thing as a Tea Cup" and I try to educate them about buying etc. I usually end up with them looking at me like I'm a nut but what the hell, chances are I won't see them again I feel like I've done my job. I hate too when people come up (strangers) and want to know how much you paid for your yorkie. I get that a lot with my two and I think it's just plain rude. I'd never dream of asking strangers how much they paid for anything let alone a pet but I guess that's just me. |
I just say, "Actually, all Yorkies are the same classification, and that there is really no such thing as a teacup… the small ones are just runts being bred with other runts, but t isn’t really healthy for the dogs to be that small. They only breed them that small cuz some people will pay a lot more for them cuz they think its cute, but like I said it isnt healthy for the dogs, really..." I say it in a nice way, as though I am sharing an interesting and little-known fact, and most people do find it interesting. I don’t get upset with them, or tell them they are perpetuating a stereotype. It is actually a really good lead-in to seeing if the person is aware of puppy mills. If they are interested in what you just explained, you could add that puppy mills are famous for doing that, and if they ask what that is, then you can share and educate one more person on what they are. |

I just say "well, there is actually no such thing as a teacup yorkie. A yorkie is a toy breed, and the standard says they should be 7lbs and under. Most show yorkies are 4-7lbs, but you'll see yorkies as pets that are smaller or bigger than that. I've seen 2lb yorkies and I've seen 20lb yorkies. There aren't different sizes though - they are all just a yorkie." and then I might go on to say how no reputable breeder advertises teacups, and that those that do are being deceitful and are just out to make more money from people that don't know any better. And I might even say how the smaller ones are at more risk for being hurt and all. Some people are ignorant and won't care what you say or will try to argue with you but as long as you keep your tone friendly, they should take it as you being nice |
I get asked this question too, often. Remy is a little over 3lbs. When someone asks the question I know is coming, "Oh, is that a teacup?" I say, "Nope, she was the runt!". Well, because, she was! Her parents were both around 5lbs, her brother and sister both outsized her - she's just little! I've tried to explain that there is no such thing as a Teacup... people just want to believe what they want to believe I guess. One time though, I felt horrible. I was in Petsmart and a woman was holding what looked to be a 15lb silky/yorkie mix, perhaps? It had the face of a silky, and was a very pretty, adorable dog!! I was holding Remy and she said, "Oh! You have a teacup!" Uhhhh... I said, "No, I have a runt!", as I laughed. She looked very sad for me, and said, "Oh, I'm sorry." She then said she had recently gotten her dog and was promised a *teacup*. She went on to explain that she paid a fortune for the dog and was told that she was apparently doing something wrong - feeding too much, and that is why her dog grew so large! She was searching for a diet food to put it on :( I didn\'t know what to say except that I thought her dog was beautiful just the way it was. The information is out there... why do people not educate themselves? It makes me sad. :( |
