I had someone email me today inquiring about purchasing one of my "teacup' yorkies. I told her I didn't have any "teacups' for sale because there is no such thing. Then i explained it all to her and warned her away from breeders trying to sell her a teacup yorkie. She was very appreciative.

Her parents were both around 5lbs, her brother and sister both outsized her - she's just little!

She went on to explain that she paid a fortune for the dog and was told that she was apparently doing something wrong - feeding too much, and that is why her dog grew so large! She was searching for a diet food to put it on :(

I didn't know what to say except that I thought her dog was beautiful just the way it was.

The information is out there... why do people not educate themselves? It makes me sad. :(

:confused: like her dog is going to lose 12lbs and all of a sudden because a "teacup"?? I wish people weren't so obsessed about size...

Me: "Are you asking in reference to breed or size?"
If the answer is undesirable, -
I: "Well, breed, I suppose. She's so tiny!"
M: "I get that a lot, but most people don't know there's actually no such breed as a 'Teacup'."
and go from there.

Haha I get that question all the time...Most of the time I smile. My friend recently got a yorkie and keeps referring to it as a teacup yorkie, the other day I explained that there is no such thing but I got a blank stare...Oh well we can inform them all.

I just think it sounds ignorant to say you have a teacup yorkies. It's one thing for a non-yorkie owner to say it..they probably just don't know. But anyone that owns a yorkie should know enough about the breed to know there is no such thing as a teacup yorkie. It just sounds so stupid and uneducated when I hear a yorkie-owner say they have a teacup :rolleyes:

I know, I do admit before I started researching yorkies I didn't know, but before I got my precious little one I did a lot a research on yorkies and soon learned that there is no such thing as a teacup yorkie. Oh well......the best I can do is direct here to my new favorite website and hopefully she will understand.

:confused: my exact thought too at the time. WHY are people so obsessed with size - of dogs - and - how *expensive* they are? As if the more dollars they pay is some kind of insurance they are getting a teenie-tiny-teacup, or whatever they are calling them this week!!?? I honestly don't understand the whole "pocketbook dog" "Purse dog" thing - at all :confused: And- how all of a sudden it's OK for total strangers to ask how much I paid for my dog? :eek:

LOL I know :rolleyes: I guess I could go buy a $10,000 tiny puppy from a certain puppymill here in TX...but I'd rather pay $2000 and get a healthy, well-bred dog from a show breeder

You know that is something that I don't understand either. Everyone keeps asking me how much I paid for my dog. I don't know...it kind of bothers me also.....I don't understand why everyone is obsessed with the "small size" mine is going to grow to be 6-7lbs and I am glad because I think when they are too small they are much more prone to getting hurt. I hate it when people look down on big yorkies...ALL yorkies are beautiful :)

Absolutely! I researched out the wazoolie, found a good breeder - and knew I was getting the runt!! She's amazing, but I do worry about her size! I know that being so small can pose risk, and I watch out for those things. Thankfully, I know her entire history, lineage, etc...

And to the previous poster - I can't even believe that someone would pay $10,000 for a puppy :eek: Even if I had that kind of money... isn't the health, integrity and stability of the breed the most important thing? I love this breed for a reason, and it would be comforting to know that it's being preserved - the right way :animal-pa

I will say "Actually yorkies are supposed to be 7lbs and under" although they never believe me. You can tell. lol!

Unfortuantaely some people are just soo stubborn when it comes to knowing about dogs, honestly I paid $600 for my yorkie and it came with history, medical documents, lineage, the whole nine yards, the breeder is the sweetest lady I have ever met, shes a show breeder....I wish people would just better educate themselves!

The term "teapot" is used to sort of poke fun at the people who swear by the term "teacup". It's used for any Yorkies that are over the standard, 7lbs.

I think it is so rude to ask how much someone's dog cost. What's wrong with people??? It's one thing if it's someone I know and they are truly interested in buying a dog like mine...but some stranger off the street asking how much my dog costs..no way.. I just say "she was a gift" and leave it at that...and if they ask how much yorkies are I will say "normally between $1000-$2000 but you can find them for more or less"
