Well of course you need to wait for the bleach to dry, but it does not leave a toxic residue. |
I use bleach because I am a germaphobic. I cant stand the thought of germs lurking around when I can do something about it. This being said, I have a human child and she has known since birth that when mommy is cleaning she is to stay in another room and not touch anything because mommy is using chemicals. I treat Dusty the same way. He has to stay in another room until everything is dry. He has never tried to lick anything and he has never been sick. I think as long as you are safe with it , it is completely safe for them. IMO |
I don't use bleeches because Maggie is allergic to them...:( |
Thanks. I wasnt thinking of ammonia - I am familiar with the association between urine and ammonia. I have read that cleaning peep stains with sanitizers containing bleach is a bad idea because of the smell it leaves, which causes a puppy to return to it. I have read it in several places, so perhaps it has to do with the combination of bleach and ammonia in carpets? Sorry if that isnt the case, just what I have read. |

The OP wanted to know if she could continue using bleach for cleaning, and if it was safe. I didn't take it to mean she wanted to know what to use for urine spots. You are correct in say that bleach is not effective for removing all the smells in dog's urine, and this needs to be done or the dog will continue to return to that spot. You do need an enzyme cleaner for that. This is something that actually "eats" the proteins in urine, blood, feces, etc. I'm not familiar with the product some have mentioned Odoban, I use Simple Solution, but you all have made me mighty curious about Odoban. Bleach of course should never be used on carpets, I know Simple Solution is safe, how about Odoban is it just a hard surface cleaner or can it be used on carpets? |
I understand what she was asking. That’s why I said "in addition to". I was just sharing info I learned that I thought was helpful to me. I wasn’t trying to be argumentative. You would be surprised how often products containing bleaches are recommended in the removal of stains and odors. You have made an excellent argument for bleach being safe so I guess people should just do what they are comfortable with when it comes to the use of bleach. |
I use water and bleach to clean my puppy area too! It is really the only thing that cleans the smell that I've found! |
I had never heard of ODOBAN before. I went to their site and read about their products and am going to go buy some and try it. Bailey has allergies and my son is very sensitive to chemicals is why I use vinegar. Sounds like a good product. Thanks |

i agree that bleach is not good. i don't feel chemicals are safe to use around my york. plus the fumes are bad. |
I only use bleach about once a month to clean the pad area. In between bleach cleanings I use method lavander because it smells soooo good:) Also for carpets I use Meyers clean day. Like bleach and method it is safe to use around kids and pets and again the scents are wonderful! Cleaning is less of a chore! Good luck! |
I would not I am a clean freak too, but I worry about harmful chemicals around my yorkies. I am also a groomer in a busy shop. I now use a steam cleaner on everything. Steam will kill germs and parasites. I steam clean the pets bedding beofre I wash it, I steam my floors, walls, crates, and most of my grooming equipment. You can get a small steam cleaner (scunci brand) at most wal-mart, target, meiger type stores...even some drug stores carry them (Walgreens, CVS) It is safe and effective. JMHO... Sue & Cricket |
I just wanted to say when I worked at a kennel We used STRAIGHT bleach to disinfect the concert and then washed it down with a scrub brush and water This was at what i thought to Be a very nice kennel (when I worked there at least tehe ) all kidding aside Do i think its sanitary YES do I think it should be diluted when used around dogs to make it safe YES JMO thou :D |
