Hello Everyone!
 

Hi! This is all a little overwhelming, but I wanted to say hello. I just joined here because I'm hoping to get my very own adorable Yorkie pup. I live in Tallahassee, FL and cannot wait for the day to brighten things up when I can add a puppy to the family. It's a bit frustrating because I can't get a puppy until this winter but I'm enjoying reading all of the informative posts here.

Anyway, hi!

P.S. I'm a former poodle owner, so this is all new territory for me.

Hi, welcome to YT. I found this website before I got my yorkie too. It was tremendously helpful in informing me of the qualities to look for in a breeder. You have lots of time to make inquiries and get to know some of the breeders located near you. Most first-rate breeders have a waiting list, so it good that you started early. You might want to stay away from the picture section, or you'll want to rush your purchase!

Joey's breeder formerly breed poodles, she was madly in love with them until she got a yorkie!

Thanks so much everyone! I'm trying to make my way through everything here but if anyone has any specific tips/suggestions/etc I'd love that too.

I'm mostly concerned about finding a good (reasonably priced) breeder near'ish to me. Though I doubt I'll be able to find both, let alone any time soon. We'll just have to see.

I'm sure somebody will be able to recommend a breeder in your area. Or you might want to check the regional forum and post there as well. I know that you will find lots of information here to help you in your search and if you look on the Featured Yorkies for Sale thread ... it might help also.

I always recommend the Yorkshire Terrier Club of America. These people are in good standing with the America Kennel Club. http://www.ytca.org/breeder4.html There are a lot listed in Florida, and if I were you, I would e-mail several that were closest to me. The people listed don't always have websites since they don't always have puppies available. You can then get to know them and see their breeding stock, so you will have a great idea of what the puppy will look like full grown. A good breeder can give you tons of great information. The price of these dogs are often less than that of pet stores where the puppies come from puppymills. Buying through websites is very risky because many of these are just puppy brokers, and what you see is not what you get. Ethical breeders are more conscientious of screening for health problems and this will save you money and heartache in the long run. Good luck with you search!

I excitedly told my boyfriend about here, to which he mostly rolled his eyes, and now he's trying to limit the time I look on here because he knows how upsetting it can be, being tempted.

Me: "Look, sooooooooo cute!"
Him: "Stop."
Me: "Look, look at that one! And look they say to do this ...."
Him: "Come one..."
Me: "Puppies!!! I want one ..." :(
Him: "Seriously, we're leaving, get off that site!"

Hi, and welcome! I'm new here too, and I love this site. You'll find a lot of great information, and a lot of really friendly people!

I have two Yorkie babies, Scooter and Jilly. They are adorable little girls. I've had other breeds that I loved too. I had a poodle, a beagle, a shih tsu (the love of my life who died of cancer and I still weep over her) and another Yorkie named Roxy who died from a bee sting. I still cry over her too!

Trust me; you will be so in love with your baby when you get it!!

I have no fear of not loving my puppy whenever I get her. My fears all involved getting her. Haha. A few things worry me: (1) The timing of when I want my pup (some time this winter, December or January), (2) the initial costs of purchasing a dog (it's one thing to spend a lot over a large period of time, it's another to shell out a small fortune at once, especially being in grad school), (3) finding a good breeder near by (and other related fears since I've heard that good breeders have wait lists).

OMG!! That's so the truth!:D

Thanks again, I'll definitely try to comb over the suspended breeders list (though there's a LOT).

I'm getting a bit upset though, as I haven't been able to find too many breeders in my area. Don't know if I'm being picky/spoiled or not, because there are tons in my state (Florida) but most seem to be hours and hours away. Which is a shame because I'm from South Florida (Miami) and most seem to be around there, but that's 8+ hours from where I live now.

Ideas anyone?

P.S. It's so cute to see everyone bragging about their dogs. Can't wait until I can do that too! (We've got a countdown of months until we move to our pet friendly new apartment. But I've now started an unofficial countdown until puppy comes home.) I almost want to post pictures of my family dog here, but she's a poodle (and our other just passed away).

Eight hours is a long way, but they have e-mail and you can get to know them that way. Many go to dog shows and that might be a way to meet with several breeders. If you are originally from Miami maybe someone you know could check some of them out. As a last resort, Miami is a great place to visit!

I feel like the carrot has officially been put on a stick and is dangling in front of me.

After reading everything here, going over people's experiences, suggestions, and advice I'm in information overload but think I'm at a good starting point. I went to the Yorkshire Terrier Club of America website and emailed all of the breeders that were listed that are within 3 hours of me. I've gotten a few responses but nothing really hopeful yet.

I talked to my Mom about all of this and of course, being the amazing woman that she is, without me asking she made it her mission to find some other options. She spent an hour on the phone with a breeder 2.5 hours away from me. They chatted, talked about life, things they share in common, and of course puppies. She thinks she'll have puppies around the time that I want one, and as long as she does, she can save me a female in that litter. Also, she'd be willing to give me a discounted rate (seeing as I'm a lowly graduate student, the money isn't exactly flowing like a raging river) since we asked the right questions and were really trying hard to give this dog a good home.

She sent pictures of her current litter and the Mom and Dad and said I'm welcome whenever to visit. According to the conversation she had with my Mom the puppies would have AKC papers/registration and she'd keep them for 2-3 months minimum until she was comfortable with them leaving. I'm all very excited but I'm really wanting to know more about everything, or rather known this is potentially a sure thing. (It seems a little too good to be true, to be honest.)

So, beyond sharing my excitement with everyone, does anyone know anything about any breeders out in Jacksonville, FL (if so, maybe one of them is this lady)?
