New puppy:-) Hello everyone. I am a new member:-) My boyfriend and I got our baby booy Deegan on Saturday, March 1st. He is 9 1/2 weeks and simply precious. He is do for his 3rd vaccine in three weeks. The vet said that he should have his rabies vaccine then as well. I had read that most are done at 16 weeks. Any advice on when to have his rabies shot? |
Welcome to YorkieTalk! I'm sure someone will post the latest info for you soon. We can't wait to see photos of your little one. :) |
Funny you should ask that question. Lilly just had her baby teeth taken out - they were doubled. She's 9 months and my vet asked about rabies. I told him that she was 13 weeks when we got her - he said then she didn't have it because it's too young to give it. With that said I'm assuming that your boy having it done at 9 weeks is a little young. I think he said they usually do not do the rabies until around 5 months or so. Anyone? Elaine |
Welcome, I'm so glad that you joined us here on YT. |
hi and welcome to yt:) |
Congratulations and Welcome to YT! Both my breeder and vet suggest waiting until 6 months old for the rabies shot, especially if they are on the small side. I've heard stories of complications due mostly to injecting in the wrong area. |

Thanks everyone for the responses and welcome:-) The vet was saying that in New York(where we are) they like dogs to have rabies done at 3 monthes. I guess I should do this, but am just a bit worried about getting his last vaccine and rabies at the same time, thinking it may be too much for him. |
I think that 9 1/2 weeks is WAY, WAY too young. I'm not positive on this, but the puppy may still have maternal antibodies at this point. If this is true then vaccinating for Rabies will be pointless as the MA will just destroy the virus. Franklin got his at 4 months (16 weeks) but it's law here. I would wait as long as possible (to obey the law) and if possible, wait until 6 months. ETA -- just saw your post. If it is law to do it at 3 months, I guess you don't really have a choice. I would schedule two appointments and get the DHPP combo and rabies shot done on different days. These vaccinations require so many different responses from the immune system, it's better to not overload the little ones. |
Thanks:-) |

Welcome to YT!:) |
It really depends on your state but I will say this. Michigan is a four month state and Ellie would be hanging out inside until six months if I had to do it over. Some vets might work with you on this because Yorkies are so small. |
SC is a 4 mo. state also, but, when I went for my pups shots, the vet tech said she thought they had gone to 3 mos. I told her I didn't want it given until she was spayed at 5 1/2 mos. they said no problem, as long as we didn't get caught with her not having it..I dont' take her anywhere, so I knew I wouldn't get caught..I think they're giving them too soon..Just tell the vet that he won't be going anywhere, and you would rather wait until he's a tad bit older.. |
