Belly Bands What exactly to belly bands do? Tucker has been marking all over the house (I know we need to have him neutered, but the vet said we have to wait for his second testicle to descend). Last night he peed on the corner of my bed - and it got on my brand new white comforter!! Should I use a belly band when I can't keep an eye on him?? Does it just absorb the pee?? |

Iv been wondering the same thing, wookie pretty much marks where ever he pleases.. i'v thought about using the belly bands, but am i suppose to take it off when i take him to the pad myself.. but what if he actually goes to the pad himself to peee.. is this good, bad? id love to hear what others think of this as well. |

1 Attachment(s) Belly bands are the equivilent of diapers but for boys. You put a pad in it. They go over the boy's little "manhood" so if they try to pee it stays in the belly band. Heres a pic of my friends dog wearing one. He is 4 years old and was never potty trained because his previous owner negelected him. He stayed ina garage all his life :( . So while my firend is workign on training him she has him in a belly band so if her has an accident he doesnt get it inthe house. |

Its my understanding an experience most dogs do not actaully want to pee on themselves or in their bed so I think wearing a belly band or diaper helps to teach them not to, or learn to hold it. Now I am definetly not saying take them outside any less. BUt we started letting chloe sleep with us and at first I put a diaper on at night and I was amazed she would go all night with out pottying. During the day she has to go at least ever 2 hours it seems but not at night. She doesnt even have to wear a diaper at night anymore. I am pretty amazed. |

hmmm, well wookie seriously goes every 20 mins. little spots everywhere, so thats why i know he is marking.. and he sleeps with me at night, but he never pees in my bed, he jumps off, and pees anywhere he pleases though. Wouldn't belly bands make the training process go much slower |

Belly bands are meant to help save your house from being marked. They are not meant to discourage from potty training or anythign like that. Iwas mearly saying that I think they may help discourage a dog from peeing while they are wearing one in the house so that they can stay dry. That way as soon as you take it off of them and let them out they are ready to go potty OUTSIDE. This is just an opinion. Its seems to workign this way with my friends. |

hmmm, maybe if he has to run around with a wet band it would discourge him from peeing all the time.. i guess i never thought about it that way.. maybe ill try that. Thanks for the advice!! |

I just bought one - (barkindogclothes.com - $3.50 for xs), we'll see how it goes! I think I'll put it on him at night when I can't keep an eye on him. It seems like that's when he does the most damage! |

wer're going to get one for tucker too, probably. |

Its like a diaper for dogs. They have them at petsmart too. |

I had never heard of belly bands before I got Indy, but I had the same problem. He would go everytime I took him outside, but if he was busy playing or roughing with the other dogs he'd just stop and pee where ever he was at, even if I just had him out 5 min ago! I was getting sick of cleaning up pee spots so I decided to try belly bands and they were a lifesaver for me! He did pee in them, but after a while he would hold it longer and then I could get him outside. I don't think it has hampered his housebreaking, he gets better and better every day. I really only used them when I knew I couldn't watch him every minute and sometimes in the crate if I knew I was going to be gone longer than an hour. I'll tell you when they really helped. Right after school was out (I work at a high school) I had to go out of town to stay with my mother for a few days. Since no one was here all day and the other dogs could hold it til my husband came home, I took Indy with me. She lives in a no pet apartment on the 3rd floor. Pets can visit, she just can't own one, but I didn't want him peeing all over her apt. I kept the belly band on him most of the time and what a relief not to worry about him peeing!! I'd leave it on him til I got downstairs to the grass and then take it off. Most of the time as soon as it was off he peed immediately. One word of caution, don't use the feminine napkins as they are not meant to absorb as well. Use a pad used for urine incontinence in people (like Depends) because is absorbs more and it prevents it from having an odor. Good luck! |

Good idea about Depends! I always use the feminine pads. And yes, they do help with potty training. When mine where the bellyband they will not pee. I take it off when they go out and put it back on when they come in. It is also great when I am at a friends house or shopping or in a hotel and I want to be sure that "no accidents" will happen! They ahve been a real life saver for me. I use the panties for the girls in the same situations and they have matching tops or dresses so yiu can't really tell. It just looks like part of the outfit! |

Tuck is 7 months old. My vet wants to wait until he is a year, and if it doesn't drop by then - then they'll operate. She also warned me about testiculare cancer. I'm going to wait it out for a few more months, but if nothing happens by then - we'll have the surgery. I just want to avoid the more complicated procedure if at all possible. Thanks!! |

oh my gosh, i don't know if i could buy depends without my face turning bright red!:embarasse LoL I thought those depends were like underwear, do they actually make depends pads.. and is it bulky for the yorkie to be wearing it? What are they called at pet's mart.. i went on line to see if i could find them, but i cant? |

I was thinking the ssame thing! Do they sell depends online?! I don't know if I can go to the store & buy them!! |

LoL!!! i found them on pets mart.. they are called "male doggie wraps" LoL!!! how funny. :p :D :p |

Yes, Depends does make a pad and they really aren't that bulky in the belly band. I always go the cheap route and buy the generic brands. I buy at Wal-mart, most cashiers don't know what they're checking out anyway. I understand the embarassment of buying them, funny story, I was out of pads and was in a hurry so I stopped at the grocery store in the town where i work. Bad move! Didn't even think about it, but when I got up to the cashier, it happened to be one of my students!! Talk about bright red!! Him and me!!! I explained what I used them for and he's like "sure you do". Still get red when I see him at school. |

ROFL!! barkingdogs.com is closed until july 15.. i dont want to pay $25 at pets mart!! anyone else know where i can get them from? |

Umm...I don't want to embarrass you or anything...but um... today is the 18th! She might be backed up with stuff though. I know I am certainly not paying $25 for something my dog is going to pee on! |

LoL, that doesn't embarrass me.. but i meant August 15.. she is closed from July 15-august 15.. that was just a typo on my part :p |

I make belly bands :) I have some listed on my website |

Buy one belly band and you can start making your own..use a daytime sanitary pad..panty liners are too thin and overnight ones are too thick. At least 3 times a day take the pad off, cleanse them, the dog not the pad, with scented baby-wipes, powder them and let them air out for a while. Sound familiar?? Yep, if you have kids you are all to familiar with the routine..LOL Seriously, it will get to be a routine and could help in training...You can make them for every occasion. My little boy, Jesse, had denim, red satin, red cords and flannel ones for every day..Way tooooo cute.. |

I never knew what belly bands were until now!! Wow, it sounds like I NEED (not even WANT) to get them. Fred is starting to mark his territory. He's peed on his toy this morning!! But, it's only a few drops each time in every corner. Does the pad insidee absorb their pee if they do pee? I just don't want him walking around smelling like his own pee! |

Honestly they are super easy to make. ever sewn a pillow? You can sew a belly band. Its just a rectangle. Measure your dog down there and add a few inches so it can over lap. Make sure you use washable fabric. I like to use cotton on the outside and fleece on the inside because it is cushiony and absorbant if the pad isnt enough. And easy to wash. |
