Can I have a Yorkie and a Kid?? My boyfriend and I are a young couple and we had a male Yorkie, Kemosabe, for 1.5 yr. He passed away in an accident involving a large dog off a leash (too sad for words). We are hoping to eventually get another Yorkie- I can't imagine having any other kind of dog b/c we love Yorkies SO much. However, because we're a young couple, I'm starting to wonder if we can have a Yorkie and be okay having a child eventually too??? I want both to be safe and happy but we really want to have both. Any opinions? How do we keep the dog safe and still happy?? |
I work with adoptive families, and my first big experience with the breed was with a couple that had three Yorkies, and we placed a baby with them. Everyone did just fine! The couple now has two children and continues to have Yorkies.;) |
I have a four year old kid and a 6 month old yorkie. They get along beautifully! The only thing is you really have to supervise them together. YOu can't turn your back for one minute. I have taught my daughter respect for animals. She will not pick him up or play roughly with him. I think if I did not teach her that, he would not like her. I think that if you get a yorkie before you have a child, you should expose him to as many children as possible so that when you do start your family, he will already be used to children. Good luck! |
I have a four year old and a 16 months old both boys. I have a 9 month female yorkie and they do great together. My Bikini weighs 5 pounds. They are all great friends! But it is true, I have to supervise them to insure they don't hurt her. It's a lot of education, but in a couple of years it will pay off! My best advice, maybe don't go for a 2 pounds Yorkie. Go for a more sturdy one. At 5 pounds, I think this is just perfect. If she goes up to 6 pounds, it will be even better. The kids can play a bit more with her! Good luck! |
i think it is definitly do-able.. but it just might require extra attention on your part.. esp when the child is a toddler... toddlers... well... toddle ..lol.. and it is easy to fall on a small dog and cause serious damage... but you will be raising a child that is respectful of dogs and will know how to treat them :) if you are very cautious i think it can be done :) |
I am so sorry about your First baby.. Yes I think it can be Done.. you Just have to Watch very closely and Train both Dog and Kid to respect each other. I started getting yorkies when Bre was 3 and she and my Yorkies did great. But it does take work. Good luck to what every you Decide and Welcome to YT |
I have had yorkies since my Daughter was 5, she is going on 8 now and never had any incidents. We have yorkies, hamsters, a cat, a turtle and we are getting a bird so she has been raised around animals and has been taught to respect them |
I have a nephew that had three children, and they grew up with a yorkie.. teaching children respect of animals, and exposing a yorkie to children as often as possible would be a good idea.. the hard part is, having a yorkie you love and pamper and then having a baby, and like a second child the yorkie can be left out.. so there is just lots to think about. But it can be done. |
I have a yorkie and three children ages 3, 8 and 11. NO problems here. Obviously your yorkie will probably come first. When baby is born you just teach them about each other and watch them well until the baby is older. |
I have 5 dogs, 2 of which are yorkies and 5 children, 2yrs 10months, 5, 11, 16 and 18. I have always had animals with our children and I ensure that they respect the animals and treat them properly. Obviously I don't have to worry about my 3 older children at this point but the 2 yonger ones are not allowed to handle my yorkies at all unless I'm right there holding one of the girls. I do not even allow my youngest to walk around the room when they are running about because it is so easy for an accident to happen. I knew this is the way I would deal with it from the get go and it works out very well. It isn't always going to be so restricted because my youngest child will get older and the dynamics will change. (my 2 yorkies are on the smaller side btw). I think it is totally do-able if your prepared and teach your children how to treat animals correctly. My kids have our 2 labs to rough house with and they love every minute of it, at no time are they rought with each other though. |
Absolutely. I have 5 children and another due in May. You just have to teach your child about respecting the dog just like you would any other animal. |
There are many breeders that will not sell to young couples planning to have children or to families with children. |
Yes Yorkies and children mix quite well. You have to make sure that they learn to respect each other. Give them both bounderies. I have three children and a boxer and a 10 month yorkie. My children are not allowed to run in the house and are not allowed to carry Snickers around. My dogs are not allowed in the play room or in the childrens bed rooms. Also, if you get your yorkie first I would try to get him around as many "gentle" children and babies as possible. Make sure that none of the children are rough yorkies don't forget anything. You want to make every experience a good one. :D Have a great day!! |
I would get a larger Yorkie and try to find a breeder that has kids who play with the pups. Or, continue to socialize the puppy with kids. Sammy came to us when she was a year old and she came from a family with little kids and she likes kids. I would get with a trainer NOW to figure out how to pick out a puppy that has a good temperament and now to make sure he does not become afraid of things. Loki has fear issues that we have spent the last 3 years working on and he is much improved and we love him but I would have loved if my trainer (who I found later) could have helped me pick him out because I might have gotten one who was not so fearful. (He was taken from mom at 8 weeks, we think this has a lot to do with it but didn't know any better then...) Good luck! It can be done! We plan to have kids and I think my two will do great! |
When my twins were 1 1/2 I wanted a Yorkie, but decided on a more sturdy breed - a Westie. He has been absolutley fabulous. They are very similar in looks (except for the color) yet a bit less talkative :) I waited until just recently to get my Yorkie, as my twins are 9 now. The todler age can be quite difficult with a very small dog. You'd have to work very hard at making sure the dog isn't played with too rough. If you're planning on kids soon, I'd suggest to wait. You'll have your hands full anyway :) |
