do you take your pups in public???
 

Here's another question: How many of you all take your dogs to shops and restaurants? We tried to take Cricket a few places a few months ago, but they won't let him in the Wal-Mart or the Costco and I got dirty looks when I brought him into JoAnn fabrics.

Do you take your pups in public? Also, how do you handle issues like knowing when they need to potty?

Do you carry them in your arms, or in a bag? I have a cool bag just for Cricket, but he hates it and will whine and scratch at the mesh parts and it draws a lot of attention to the fact that I have a dog with me.

So where do you take your dogs, how do you know it's okay to take them, and what do you do about how to carry and when to potty?

We take Zoe everywhere because at 3 pounds she fits in my purse.

Zorak is too big and too rambunctious to go to resturaunts/grocery stores.

I think it matters what part of the world you live in. We are in Arizona and folks here take their tiny babies with them to many places.

We have never gotten anything but ooohs and ahhhs... even at resturaunts.

We do not let Zoe run around or walk on the floors.

Heck, in WalMart I see children that are dirtier than my Zoe is to be honest!

If they told me I could not bring her in there, I would just walk out and go to another store.

PS, as for the pottying thing... we potty her before we go in and when we come out.

Some doggies are not public friendly. Zorak would make a fuss and want to be running wild. Zoe is a calm baby that is satisfied to just be still and with me.

You have to know your baby and what they enjoy. Zorak would NOT enjoy being confined to my bag/arms. Zoe would NOT be happy staying home and missing out on the shopping.

I only take mine in places where they are allowed to go and they are on leashes

That is one thing that bugs me--Cricket is so clean! We wipe his paws, give him a bath once a week, and (I hope this isn't too weird) wipe his butt and his winker after he potties.

My rationale with the potty wiping is this: If this dog is going to reside on my arm and in my bed, then I do not want peepoo on my arm or in my bed. So we babywipe him. It's not that big of a deal, and he never stinks and is really clean.

Do you have a special purse you use to carry the kid, or do you stick him in a regular bag?

Do you carry treats to keep him happy?

I live in a big city so everywhere I take them is public. I don't really take them to stores or restaurants though- unless I know they are allowed. I typically walk them on the streets and carry them in stores.

They pretty much have to enjoy going with you and not fight to get out of the bag or scratch. Also, you can't take them into anywhere that sells/serves food as it is a health violation. I take Sammy clothes shopping with me and I take both of them to outdoor cafes. Loki likes to walk and Sammy likes to ride in her bag.

I do fine at Jo-Anns. Ann Taylor Loft asked me to leave, Gap insisted they hold her while I went in the fitting room and cooed over her the whole time. It's a typical YMMV... Your Mileage May Vary

I don't take Snickers with my to any public place. Most dogs are not allowed in public places unless they are service dogs. I also do not use a purse or carry bag for him. I have three daughters under 7 years of age and always have a heavy purse of bag full of stuff so if I have Snickers he is on a leash I don't need to carry anything else in my hands;) . Sometimes I take him to a pet store or pet food store, but not much anymore. There seems to be too many people there with large dogs and no control. I will take Snickers with me to my friends and family houses. I wish there was more places to take pets. I hate to leave my boys at home and have them watch my with those big sad eyes. But in most places they are not allowed or it is just not safe for them.

i take dexter almost everywhere with me. i do not take him to restaurants as it is not allowed here and he would likely cry because of all the food smells!!

but i take him into any store with me. i usually hold him in my arms and he does really well. he doesnt bark so noise isnt a problem and most people just LOVE him! i find i get better service when i have him with me because he makes all the sales clerks so happy and they all flock to help me! lol.

if i go to a store that doesnt allow dogs, i put im in a purse. he will scratch for a second or two, but will sit still in a purse without making a noise for about 10 mins. if i had to be longer than that in a store that didnt allow dogs, i wouldnt bring him so that he wouldnt be stressed out in the purse. he LOVES to go shopping with me though cause he just ADORES all the atention he gets! :p

if he starts to get restless or squirmy, i know its time to potty since he usually sits still if he doesnt have to go. hes pee pad trained so i usually have to go to a washroom and put a pee pad down....or if i am clothes shopping, i will take him into the change room and put a pee pad down there!

I ALWAYS did the same thing with Peanut. I kept baby wipes right by the back door and as soon as he came in, one wipe for the paws and one for the other.

I used to take Peanut with anywhere that I could. Especially when visiting family. I couldn't take him shopping with me or out to eat unless it was an outdoor establishment. It's just not allowed around here :(

I'm planning on getting Abby used to being carried in a doggie purse, so she'll enjoy it.

How do you know having your dog with you is allowed??

usally places that dont have food allow well contained dog "stroller /bag" wellbehaved dog

I take gina inside my coat pocket, because she weighs 2lbs, 4oz. Sometimes she peeps out but she gets a lot of circulated air.

Lucy goes everywhere she is welcome. I don't try to sneak her in to places but I do take her most everywhere. Lot's of pet friendly restaurants with patios in my area that loves dogs :)

Sometimes I take her in a bag and sometimes just in my arms on a leash.

Mine go everywhere, but I am pretty OCD and don't want to see someone with a dog that sheds in the supermarket so I feel that mine don't belong where there is food. Other than that they are everywhere with me! Eps. out here...the malls are swarming with pets...from dogs, to a cat on a harness.

We used to take Chloe everywhere but people gave us dirty looks and we got kicked out of places. I made the comment, I just went into the restroom and watched two of your employees use the bathroom and not wash there hands yet, my dog who is in a bag asleep can't come in. They told me to put her in the car, I said I'd rather starve.

Go you!!!! We haven't attempted to take Charlie to publi places and to be honest with you I'm kinda scared of the reactions I'll get. :rolleyes:

I don't take mine because 1) they are not really allowed anywhere around here other than PetSmart, and 2) I don't think they would enjoy it very much...they'd rather sleep on my bed!
We take our Bassett outdoor places like the park and state park areas where they are allowed.

If you want to take you little one someone but are unsure if it's allowed, call first and ask.:)

I take Hot Rod on errands. So far no one has gotten upset. I don't try to take him to restaurants but I have taken him into the grocery store in a carrier--for a really quick trip on the way home from errands. Everyone usually ooh's and ahh's over him and I have met so many people who have either had or have yorkies!

Cody James goes with me to places that allow pets. And he is on his leash until we go in and then he is in my arms. we pee before leaving and coming back. he has been with me to pay my bills. we go to the bank (mostly drive thru. we went in once), farmers furniture just to the counter to pay and then leave, cable company, blockbuster and radioshack. it's a small town and petsmart is an hour away. so he doesn't really get to go with me much. :(
just on the first when i go pay my bills.. cause no one has ever made a comment about him not allowed. a friend of ours from YT is sending us a stroller!! it's his valentine present.. we can't wait!!! it's gonna come in handy!!!!!!! cody loves to ride. i need to get him a new car seat he outgrew the one we have now.

Here, I bring Pao whenever I could bring him. I know he'd rather be out with me than staying at home. He is very good in his bag. He will stay still and be very quiet and thinks he is "invisible" hehe. Sometimes he falls asleep inside when he is tired lol :animal36 I have brought him to Wal-Mart before a few times in the bag and I have seen bigger dogs in there with a leash. Also, we go to Canadian Tire, dogs are allowed there and to the mall. I just carry him or put him in his bag when I go in to a store. I don't bring him to our local Petsmart because I have seen a lot of owners who are not able to control their big dogs and they go wild in the store.

The only down point is, I can only carry him for so long because 10 pounds to me is pretty heavy so we have to take breaks go outside and put him down on a leash.

Let's face it...you are in the dog house along with your dog when you try to take them everywhere with you. I had many a meals shivering in the cold sitting in the patio area of restaurants this winter. Luckily it's Los Angeles so I'm not talking about sub zero weather but it is still damn cold to sit outside sometimes when you can be toasty inside sans dog but I rather not leave him alone at home so I suffer through it. He doesn't like being confined in bags (darn!) so I carry him when I am in stores. Yes they can give dirty looks but unless they tell me I can't take him in...I don't care. He gets very squirmy and wants to be put down so he can be nosey but that is a sure way of getting thrown out.

I don't actually... I never take my dogs into a store or anything. but I have 2, so its a lot harder than just one to sneak em in!

i only take odie in the car with me and only if i know i'm not going to be in the store or where ever for a while

there arent signs that say no dogs allowed, but i saw this lady at walmart and they were giving her such a hard time but she was holding her doggy in her arms...so ehh, idk

mommy needs her alone time to go shopping haha

I don't, unless he needs to be there. I've brought him to petsmart for a harness fitting but I'm not sure I'd even bring him there regularly because of the other animals.

Dogs don't belong anywhere food is around, period. I don't care how clean the animal is, a lot of people have a problem with it and although I don't think I'd mind it, I respect others and I wouldn't want to cause a fuss.

Aside from that, he's not a baby. He's an animal and can be treated as such.

Ziggy goes some places with me , I dont want him to absolutely follow me everywhere. I think there needs to be some separation, so sometimes when i go get something to eat to go Ill take him. Sometimes Ill lwet him stay home

honestly i get kind of resentful that dirty poopy peeing babys can basically go anywhere and clean quiet little dogs cant.

when my moms dog was little i tried to take him around (just in my arms)... i would ask if dogs are allowed and mostly they just said i dunno or i dont care so i would bring him in. it was weird because it really depended on who i was with or what i was wearing. if i looked more grown they never bugged me, but if i looked like a teenager or whatever they say something :confused:

i got kicked out of this store called THE BUCKLE... this stupid like pacsun like store. this sales girl said.. in this snotty voice, hes real cute but you cant have a dog in the mall and i was like... ive been walking in the mall all day and none said anything not even the security guards... and she said well you have to leave.. ERR..

i think if your dog is quiet and in a stroller or bag they are comprable to a baby and should be let in lol (except for food places, i understand that).

I take my dogs everywhere except restuarants and supermarkets. I like taking them to places like HomeDepot, Marshall's, Joanne's, Hollywood Videos, etc. I like putting my boy yorkie (6.5 lbs) in the shopping cart, he loves standing up with his front legs on the edge of the cart. I usually hold my girl yorkie (2.5 lbs) with a blanket. They both behave really well, and so far I was not confronted by anyone.

I was confronted by an employee one time when I went to Target with my big boy and I never go in with my babies anymore.

When I go to an indoor mall (not all the malls welcome dogs here), I put my boy in a carrier, he will just stick his head out sniffing wherever I go. I was 'kicked' out one time in another mall by a security, I now boycott that mall.

When I flew to Oregan.. I took my Charli.. ( Now Donnas Raziel) I have a little Carrier that looks like a purse and nobody knew she was there she did GREAT not a peep, NOW IF I get a chance to go anywhere by myself (with TWO LEGGED KIDS) I will take my girls.. WHICH now that I have 3 kids under 5 that dont happen to often...lol

I take mine with me all the time.
they are so good in my carrier (they love to go bye bye ):cool: that most never know and the ones that do just gush all over them.
I only take one at a time.
but what a difference when we go to the park they are all over the place and barking.
