venting... so i wake up this morning to our normal routine, and about a half hour later i realize that madison has been really quiet :D and i havent seen her around. so i go into the bedroom and find her happily chomping away at my cell phone charger :( ...which is in multiple pieces (and still plugged in). i dont know how she didnt electrocute herself :confused: , but this is the 3rd cord she's chewed through in the past few months (2 laptop chargers...not cheap). She had seemed to stop for a while and not chew on any cords, but now shes back in the habit. Any suggestions for how to make her stop/learn that it's not okay. Of course i disciplined her as soon as i caught her in the act...but is there a preventative measure? I definitely try not to leave cords on the ground, but she sure is sneaky :aimeeyork ! |
I just when through that with two of my puppies. They chewed up 3 phone cords and a couple of lamp cords. I just try to keep the cords where they can't get to them. I try to keep plenty of cow ears down for them to chew on because I have noticed that when the cow ears are gone then they are more apt to chew on things they should not. |

Um just a suggestion......... Maybe pick them up where she can't get to them??? Puppies are just like Kids and you need to Puppy proof your house... Rather than scold her for doing it.. Just tell her no chew, take it away and give her something she can chew on.. :D |
Yea, I've puppy proofed everything i can...but she is very agile and jumps up onto my bed, crawls on the sidetable and gets at the cord... she should be in a circus or something haha |
I get these treats for my babyhttp://www.betterthanears.com they are softer than pig ears and less smelly plus less fat. They are pretty chewey and take a little time to chew but they work for smaller dogs because they are thin! |
Banjo has chewed my cell phone charger cord, and my cord on my key board! I got a cordless keyboard,after that!LOL! Also I put my keyboard box,under my desk-to block him off from the other cords! I was thinking a getting a little fence or something to put back there. I do have an Island in my kitchen that has an electic plug- half way up- and try and charge my phone there or in the car, now! I kind of looking for options , too! I am amased they don't get zapped! |

Libby started chewing on cords around Christmastime. I sprayed bitter apple on all my cords and she's left them alone since then. I'm going to respray again one of these days to make sure the stuff doesn't wear off. |

I had this problem with my big dog...I think Stanford is too old or disinterested to engage in this! I found that any cords I had near the floor were getting chewed. I used bitter apple spray, discipline...all to no avail, as I could not be home all the time to monitor TJ. My partner finally solved the problem with a roll of electrical tape. Gathered up dangling or trailing low cords, and secured them in a tight loop with the tape. The other cords I put behind furniture, or up higher. The minute the cords were secured, the problem ended. It pays to be in a relationship with a person who can see the shortest distance is between two points. LOL Good luck. Matthew |

I just think the simple and only answer is to keep them out of reach! you have to treat these little ones..any puppy for that matter..like you would a toddler.;) I have read many stories of pups getting injured by being electrocuted..even death!:( |

You know when everything is quiet something has to be wrong. :rolleyes: Every time Lexie is quiet for 4 or 5 minutes I know she's chewing on A. one of her shirts B. her collar that we no longer use or C. any kind of cap to anything. she finds them from spray bottles, pop bottles, anything. We are always really careful not to leave them around but she finds them anyway. I'd say the bitter spray would be the best option for the cord problem. Lexie had a problem with chewing up carpet and getting to the insulation underneath. We are renting the upstairs of an old house so it's in a mild state of disrepair and one day she got out 1'x 1' section of insulation and was happily chewing on it, I nearly had a heart attack! The bitter spray stopped that problem really quick so I hope it can help with you too! |

I don't have too many problems with charger cords because we try to keep them all up on counters, etc. But I do have one chair that is nearly chewed through. Reggie chewed it when he was a puppy, and now Coby is trying to finish the job. You've gotten some good suggestions... the securing of the cords and the bitter apple spray. I've always said child-proofing was waaaay easier than puppy-proofing. Matthew, in my relationship, I am the one who can see the shortest distance between two points. So my advice to you is what I give my husband.... just make sure to stay out of the way so I can see!! :D J/K |

I have furniture in front of most outlets (no exposed cords). I charge the cell phone in the kitchen. Hubby even raised outlets in the kitchen so that Conner could not get to them. |
my first sheltie had a chewing problem. chewed on cords all the time. during the night, she was chomping away on the lamp cord (which is always plugged in, and elecrocuted herself. she cried really loud, waking my mom up. but she was fine, shaken up, but fine. must have been a blessing in disguise; she never chewed another cord again! |
I think that maybe its YOU who might need to be disciplined! LOL (kidding!) I did the SAME thing with my boys, only theirs was SHOES! You wouldn't believe how many pairs I lost to their little teeth! I was mad at them all the time until it finally dawned on me one day... Im the one with the rational brain! I need to close the closet door and put all shoes away so they cannot get at the shoes to chew them. I also lost a laptop cord to them! And a bunch of other stuff... my BEST advice is close doors if something is not high enough for them to not reach it. I have learned to charge my cell on the counter in the kitchen where they cannot get the cord, shut the doors to the bedrooms, and the closets (in case they get a bedroom door open), and the bathrooms. What it comes down to is putting things out of reach - aka- puppy proofing your house! Until she is done her chewing phase (probably about a year old) Good Luck!!! Oh and Im glad she is OK! :) |
My house is as puppy proof as it can get but my husband has this stupid big screen TV and it hangs on stand and there is no way to put up the wires so we tried wrapping them and Lily took it as a challenge, (keep in mind she is not left alone to in the house but at time I get busy and she gets into a good amount of mischief ) so then we tried the bitter apple spray it stopped her but it wears off quickly so I got fooey training aid and also put a dab of chilly oil on one part of the cord so now Lily won’t even walk over there because not only does it taste bad but she hates the smell. |
Puppy proofing a house is a good idea BUT not always perfect. I don't have plugs in my ceiling to plug into, they are all in the wall towards the floor. Tessa does alot of chewing but I make sure that she has rawhide bones or cows ears to chew on. I also rub tobasco sauce on the cords. One taste and she doesn't go back. I also do this for furniture legs. Works great even if some people on here don't agree with it.:rolleyes: |

Solution I went to homedepot and bought flexible cord covers. It's flexible, corrigated tubing that has been cut lengthwise so you can easily fit your cords in. you can also cut them to any length. We would keep our phone chargers on our counter tops, but she would go after the lamp cords behind our headborad and it was hard to reach her there to discipline her, so this worked the best for us..... ...plus she eventually grew out of it. |
