Colors As far as I know the AKC only recognizes Black & Gold Black & Tan Blue & Gold Blue & Tan I got ths info from http://www.akc.org/breeds/yorkshire_...r_markings.cfm But I don't know about other organizations such as the CKC,APRI,ACA,UKCI,UABR,FIC,CRCS. I beleive the CKC is the same. |
I had something like this happen to me once. I had Rika out and about with me and this lady came up to me asking if she was a silky. I told her that she was a Yorkshire Terrier but she refused to stop asking me if she was a silky, so I assumed she meant her coat type so I held Rika out and offered her to pet her because it's very obvious if their silky or not (which Rika is not) and the lady stormed off in a huff. I was very confused... |
Hi, There is only one real purebred yorkie but many different varieties. Silky coats, wooly coats, bad temperments, good temperments, healthy, unhealthy, some with good conformations, some with bad........ The truth is........ alot of people just dont really know the history of the yorkie so they are ignorant. They think the yorkie is just one package but they have many qualities........in example colors, coats, temperment, and are being refined.,..some are bigger..........some are tiny.........but all are yorkies........considering the breeders are honest. |

Maybe she was referring to size as in.. "what kind of yorkie is that? Is that a teacup?". Just my guess. I've had people ask me that about Fred. |
I've had a lot of people tell me there are different kinds of Maltese.. and that they come in different colors. It's amazing what people think they "know" for a fact and how adamant they are about their information. I usually just shrug it off now because I almost can't get into a debate with them without laughing or being snarky. ;) |
A lady @ Stewie's vet's office had her Yorkie with her and her dog looked like a mix of maybe a Yorkie/Chihuahua or something. She got her from a pet store. Anyway, she was telling me that Stewie was way too large to be a Yorkie. At the time he was all of 4lbs. Hers was maybe 1.25 or 1.5lbs and looked extremely sick (probalby why she was at the Vet!) I almost smacked her. Finally, the vet tech told the woman who obviously had no idea about Yorkies that Stewie was indeed a Yorkie and hers is likely a mix. What a witch. I am getting mad just thinking about it! ;) |
You weren't the confused one. The other person is. I get that ALL the time. Everyone always asks if Baxter is a miniature or a toy or a teacup. I always say no, he's a normal Yorkie. Sometimes I will say there isn't such a thing as a teacup or miniature. ;) |
Some people don't know what a yorkie is. Friday this man asked me if Gucci was teacup. I told him there is not such thing. Of course he had to say that Im wrong. I explained to him that the word Teacup is used by so called breeders to charge more for a Yorkie. |
AKC recognizes and registers colors and markings other than the 4 standard combinations. The adult white, black and tan male, Remi, in my avatar is fully registered with AKC. There are some things the owner has to do such as send pics from different angles and they have a committee who makes the decision as to the correct colors and markings. It takes longer than just registering the standard colors but, for me, it was worth it |
I get he same question all the time about Tyson... just 'cause his ear don't stand and he is 7lbs. People can be so harsh the way they look at him that i even doubted the breeder for a minute so i took him to the vet and asked him. He laughted at me and told me when i get this question just tell them his is a black bear...lol but I have come up with a even better responce i simply ask them " is you mom really you mom? do u know for sure if you father is really your father?" (evil smile) I LOVE my 7lbs floppy ear baby and for those who have doubts as to "what kind of yorkie he is they can kiss his furry behind! T&T aka Tanya & Tyson. |
I usually get "Wow, she is a Yorkie, uhhh isnt she rather big to be a purebred Yorkie??" I have several hand gestures to these people when they walk away but I usualy SAY to them "She is a pure bred 13 lb pasta eating yorkie!" The nerve of some people!! HHHMMPPPHHH!!!! :) |
Valerie: My Pirogue is full blood AKC Yorkshire Terrier and he is short haired. Both his parents are (by breeders word) full blooded AKC long coated Yorkies. He needs a bath but I'll get a pic of him from the side so you can see it. He is 15 months old and should have a much longer, heavier coat. Julz: I used to think the Silkies were an offshoot of Yorkies. I thought they were the same dog just one was to standard colors and one was not. You can learn a lot in a little over a year. LOL Mette: I have an aquaintance who has 2 Silkies and they look exactly like light colored Yorkies. Her male is 3# and her female is 5#. I haven't seen their papers but I have seen their pics and they have the long coats and shorter snouts just like the Yorkies. I have asked her repeatedly if she's sure they are Silkies and she says that's what it says on their papers. I have asked her so often I don't dare do it again for fear she'll yell at me. They look so much like Yorkies, I'd like to see their papers. Suzanne: Next time they want to know how to get one so small just tell them "Luck". LOL That's all it is anyway. You NEVER know. You can pick the runt of a litter and still end up with the biggest from the litter. LOL |

Also, in reference to how much you can learn in little over a year....you're not even kidding! I joined YorkieTalk back in (end of Feb. of this year I think, early March maybe) and since then, through this site and my own interest and resarch, I've learned SOOOO much! I've become such a snob and know-it-all I think, LOL. Especially when "teacups" and "petstores" are mentioned in a sentence. But really, I found myself discussing dog food quality to my neighbor this evening.....my neighbor is a guy and his dog is a 30lb mutt....and he could probably care less, but I thought he ought to know. (He told me that he changes food all the time! Not good, right?!!) I may be going crazy. LOL. ;) |
