Questions about buying a puppy....
 

a friend of mine just purchase a chihuahua from someone. They did not meet at the sellers home, they met in front of a supermarket. Anyways, the puppy was told was 16 weeks old with shots. well she said she was going to forward her the shot paperwork from the vet through email. well all weekend she kept trying to text her to forward the vet info and no one picked up, until finally my friend said i have your license plate number(which she does), and i will look you up. the lady finally responded back and said i will email the shots that were given to the puppy and give that to the vet and they should know what shots to give next. and my friend text her back and said if there is something wrong with the puppy pls tell us now so we can take care of vet, we can afford a vet she says. The puppy looks great. very hyper, eating and all that good stuff.

There is no health gurantee that was given for this puppy and was never talked about between my friend and the sell, the only thing told to her is, the puppy has had shots. In any case.. if the puppy gets sick, can she do anything about it with the breeder or try to involve the police??? or is this her fault for not getting a health gurantee. Also they have had the puppy for a week now.

Your friend should take the puppy to the vet and let him check it out. Without knowing its condition it's difficult to decide what to do next. How did you friend find this breeder? Most backyard breeders aren't going to give health guarantees.

Not all breeders give health guarantees and with some its only a 72 hr guarantee

I'm curious if you think the pup is going to get sick...?
My vet told me, when in doubt, just start immunizations from the beginning and it shouldn't be any kind of probs....
When I got my baby, I was told that she had her shots and worming, but I seriously questioned it so we just started all over as if she hadn't had any shots or worm...It was a good thing we did too, the day after the worm meds, she jetted multiple round worms that were bigger than she was!!!
If your friend is questioning it, have her ask her vet if it would hurt to just start shots from the beginning and assume that there were no shots done....

so if there is no health guarantee than there is nothing she can do about it if something is wrong with the puppy right? she said she will call the cops or something if the puppy has something wrong with her, but i told her that if she doesnt have a health guarantee there is nothing she can do about it.

she found her on craigslist. and my friend and the seller did not talk about a health guarantee or even said if there is something wrong with the pup that she will take her back.. nothing was said (which i think was stupid). Well since my friend has the seller's license plate number, can we find out were she lives? and how do we do that? sorry.. she wanted me to ask you that.. hehe :D

Can I ask how much she paid for the pup? You would think by the way she purchased it that she knew there was not a guarentee as to the health :confused:

The police would not get involved in a case like this. If the puppy is sick...or gets sick...the only recourse would be suing the breeder in small claims court. In order to do that....she would need the breeder's information...full name and home address.

I have a major problem with buying a puppy in a parking lot....

I cant understand why anyone would buy in a parking lot either..I definetly want to see where my babies have been living..and if this person didnt bring the shot records with her that would be a huge red flag..I would turn and run the other way..but hopefully the puppy is in good health and she wont have to sue or anything..its kind of one of those live and learn lessons..

I have a friend that bought her yorkie in a parking lot. No guarantee, etc. The puppy turned out hump backed like a raccoon. She did it without asking anyone's advice, but she loves that crazy looking little thing like there's no tomorrow.

When I was helping my cousin find another puppy last week, I had gotten directions from a man to come see his puppy. He ended up saying "well I'm busy right now, but here's my brothers cell phone number and he can meet you at the Burger King by the house and bring the pup there". :rolleyes: Yeah right. I told him I'd keep his number handy if we decide thats what we wanted. :rolleyes:

I would imagine they must have a puppy mill when they dont want you to come to the house...or the house must be a disaster?? I dont know what it is but if I were a breeder I would NEED to know soooo much about the person buying my puppies..Id probably have to see their house too lol..

...not to mention the money it would cost to sue someone and bring them to small claims court. if the puppy gets sick, its a tough lesson learned for your friend. unfortunately there is nothing she can do except love the puppy no matter what.

if she really wanted to get back at the "breeder" she could always do some investigating work to see what the conditions are that they breed in. if it is a puppy mill you may want to look into contacting rescue groups and shelters to try to get the person shut down. there have been other threads on here where YT members have put forth a huge effort to get puppy mills shut down.

well i'm torn in this situation.
mainly because my yorkie, sophie, was purchased in a home depot parking lot.
the breeder's house was in some small town i had never heard of, off of a larger town i was familiar with. i had visited her web site before, saw the pictures of her house and puppies, she even had a health guarantee lined up for the puppy. The reason we purchased Sophie in the parking lot was because she was trying to help us save time on a trip that was already five hours away from our home.

considering she would allow us to return the dog under any circumstances she was sick, i don't think she was hiding anything.
after taking sophie to the vet, her only health problem were ear mites, but that is a common infection for young puppies.
(all four of my shelties had them at one point as puppies)
it's all about your judgement, i suppose.

Plus, I would be so afraid now a days to have strangers come to your house...that is a hard one, I dont know.:confused:

do you want strangers knowing where you live with thousands of dollars worth of yorkies?

California has some of the toughest puppy lemon laws in the country so your friend isn't totally unprotected if she takes the puppy to the vet right away.

I have a friend who also got a chi. from a parking lot, was promised papers, never got any of them. Their vet has restarted the shots on the puppy. But I told my friend to do her research, and I think when she saw an ad in the paper she just got too excited, saw the puppy and fell in love. When we were trying to get the papers, I called the "breeder" myself, acting interested in a puppy, and to make a long story short we found out this breeder was actually a broker. Their puppy is in a loving home and is spoiled! So far she seems very healthy, and right now that's what's important.

I thought buying a pup in a parking lot was a big problem too. I hadn't considered this point until someone posted it in another thread (along with the "meeting halfway" situation). I guess when your place of business is your personal home, it truly would make it harder. If it were me, I'd have to do some good phone-screening before inviting someone to come visit my pups at my home.

If you already know where the person lives what would stop someone from dognapping anyhow?? If people knew I was a breeder they could look up my address from any website if they wanted to steal my dogs/puppies. I guess security measures have to be in place in any home as no one is safe from burglaries of any type..that argument never works for me personally..if you trust me enough to sell me a puppy in a parking lot then you should trust me to come into your home and meet you and spend time getting to know each other...JMO

well it's just one of those to each his own sort of deals.


all i know is that my baby is a VERY healthy, energetic, playful puppy.
my breeder gave me a health guarantee.
if she is trying to hide something,
stupid her for allowing me my money back if my baby were sick.

i don't know, i tend to think it was a nice gesture to go out of her way, instead of getting lost in a town i am very unfamiliar with, after making several calls, asking if i had gown too far after passing the burger king.

If you were comfortable with that situation..more power to you and Im very happy you have a healthy puppy..for sure!! :) I just wonder about the people that dont live hours and hours away and have the potential buyers meet them elsewhere..Ive read it sooooooooo many times on here..if your close enough to go to the home..I just dont understand why a parking lot would even be considered..I totally get where you are coming from if you have driven so far and she wants to ease up on your driving time..its the OP that said their friend didnt get health records on the spot..it all just seems fishy to me..thats all..:)

If she got it from craigslist then it wouldn't be considered a sell but an adoption because they only allow adoptions and if something happened then it would be considered as only an adoption. Meaning that there could be health problems without you knowing but You may not have a case against them. because, again, it is not a sell......

I totally agree if you are selling a puppy in a parking lot, you better have papers right there with you.

I'm sorry, she just told me right now, that she got them from backpage.com, would that still be considered as an adoption or a sell?

Is your friend worried that the pup IS sick, or worried that he will GET sick? Or is she just wanting to give the pup back and get her money back?

Has she taken the puppy to a vet? Or is it that she just doesn't believe the vaccinations given? The vaccinations can be started over. How old is puppy? 8 weeks would mean 1 set of shots. Without a breeder's cooperation...the only recourse for a sick puppy is through small claims court. Even with a contract/health guarantee...if the breeder did not abide by the guarantee...you would have to take them to court to enforce it. Puppy lemon laws are enforced the same way...via the court system.

no she has not taken the pup to the vet yet and it has already been a week. the puppy is 16 weeks old is what we were told. she does not believe the vaccinations were given. we both believe the seller lied about giving the puppy the shots to so she can get a sell. if my friend takes her to court, will she have to pay all the fees?

my friend is just afraid the puppy is sick (but she seems fine).
