Is your Yorkie tied up when let outside? Hello! We are currently pee-pad training our 14 wk old Mariah but as soon as the weather gets nicer we want to start training her to go outside. I was wondering if everyone ties up their dogs. It's my understanding that Yorkie's shouldn't have collars...so do you use a harness to tie them up? I could never just let her outside without containing her someway and we don't have a fenced yard. |
Personally..if my yard was not fenced in, I wouldn't leave her outside..much less tied up. Id rather be out there with her..just in case. Besides other animals coming in to your yard, there are also hawks to watch for. There was a post just today about how 3 hawks tried to pick up a member's baby... |
No I dont with mine. I have a fenced front and back yard and I still go out with them when they are outside. I am too worried about preditor birds |
Mine are pee pad trained, we let them run free out back every night when it's nice out, but, never leave them out there by themselves(2 bigger ones I could), but, still you have hawks that can take a small dog in a heartbeat. As far as tying up dogs? I dont beleive any dog should ever be tied up, I think it's cruel...We have 2 outside dogs, but, they have a huge dog run and every night we let them out to run the back yard.. |
invest in a fence invest in a fence...my yorkies have been attacked by a pit bull (mine were leashed and with me) and I've seen yorkies die that were attacked and couldn't get away..... never leave your yorkie unattended...hawks are a real threat...I've seen them carry off a cat not much smaller than my little guy....and you know cats are real smart about such things... roxanne;) |
Gizmo is 7.5 lbs, but I wouldn't leave him outside unsupervised at all. There are thieves, big dogs and other predators. We also don't tie him up or tether him. We have two xpens put together for a little play area and that works for us. Gizmo uses pee pads though. I don't think he knows you're supposed to "go" on the grass. He just likes to run through it. |
To answer your other question, we have a harness for Gizzy that his leash attaches to for walks. Nothing is around his neck. |
I agree that Yorkies should not be outside unattended. We live in the middle of the burbs and regularly see hawks flying around. If you think it might be a problem using a harness and leash to take your pup outside to potty, get an X-pen and put him in there for potty purposes. I still would not leave him unattended as many of them jump and can jump out of an X-pen. |
JMO Do not leave her unattended ever! You can put her in a X pen in the grass so she is contained and could do her business and will not get out...While you watch her. Invest in a fence as soon as you can .... If walking her yes get a harness nothing should go around her neck it should be around her belly and chest with a loop on the back that you hook your leash into to walk her.. Please never leave her unattended. Untrained dogs and even birds will swoop her up and she will be gone. |
NO no NEVER tie her up and leave her outside. As annoying as it is (I used to have to do it myself), you may have to harness her up and take her out on the leash every couple of hours yourself. Even now that I have a fence I STILL won't let them out by themselves. There are just too many threats posed for these little babies...:( |
Ellie is walked out on a leash and supervised at all times. |
Thanks! I really appreciate all of the replies! We have a bichon that we let outside when she has to potty. She wears a collar and we have a chain hooked up outside. She is an inside dog and only goes outside when she wants to. She barks at the door to go out and to come in. I had planned to do the same with Mariah - I just wanted to be sure it was ok and if we could use a collar or had to use a harness. I really appreciate all the advice. I will plan to never ler her go outside unless she is supervised! |
i don't have a fence either... well there is one on each side of the yard but not by the house or the back of the back yard. i have asked hubby to get one so i can train them to go outside but i get nothing. i put Walker on the tie out with a collar but only because he's 12 lbs. Troy doesn't go out at all unless she has her harness on. shes to small for the tie out |
I have a fence and I still go out with mine. In fact, I make him walk on a leash (with a harness) in a certain area of my yard until he does his business. Then he can run off leash for a while if it's nice enough. But I'm too nervous even with a fence to leave him alone. I worry about birds of prey, him digging under the fence and escaping or him falling through the rails of my back deck and getting hurt or worse. It really would be easier to just tie him up, but I think that too much could happen to these little ones. Also, for potty training purposes, you can monitor when they go, if they go and also if it's #1 or #2. This helps me to know his potty schedule and is a valuable aid in preventing him from going inside the house. Good Luck! |
we do have a fenced in yard but when lacey was smaller i had an x-pen that i put her in and if i wasnt going to be outside with her i zip tied netting over it. |
