I lost my little Yorkie in Jan. when I let him out to go pee. As soon as he saw something across the street, he bolted right in front of a car and was killed. I will never ever let another one out even with me right there, unless they are harnessed and me holding the other end of the leash. We are putting up a fence before our new baby comes home. I will be able to be on the deck and supervise her. I'm glad you came here to ask :) It might have saved you a lot of heartache. |
They have free run of our fenced in backyard. |
An ounce of prevention is worth a ton of cure! I never let my baby out by herself. She is piddle pad trained and usually does her thing on that. But when she does go out she is always in a harness with a leash. And we do not have hawks around here. I just worry. An ounce of prevention is worth a ton of cure! |

I totally agree, do not tie them up, do not leave unattended. Buy a playpen with extentions, then you can get some air while they do their business. Mine only go in our fenced yard when we are with them, and even then I have my yard sectioned off. In the winter, they have to settle for pee pads and occasional trips to the garage, (more pee pads) or the patio which is fenced in. I swear my house is more dog proof than it was kid proof.....seems that way anyway... |
I have a fenced in yard, but I always tie them on a leash. they are so little they see a bunny in their yard and the go running, they can fit under the fence, on the other hand my husband lets them out back w/out a leash and every so often i hear him yelling at them. they don't listen to mommy so i always tie, them. |
Yorkies should not be left out on leashes outside unattended, in my opinion. You can take your baby out on the leash as long as you're with her and make sure she pees, and then take her back in..I would not tie her to anything... Walk her on the leash. |
I take mine out and stay with them. I'm to scared to leave them alone! |
we use an x pen out side... but I never ever leave my yorkies side. I will say, in the x pen, he goes potty within 5 minutes. EVERY TIME!!! It works great.;) |
We have a fenced back yard but I always stay with him. In fact, he won't stay by himself:D He's such a momma's boy. I am so afraid of hawks. I know someone on here had one taken by a hawk out of their back yard and a friend of mine in Vegas had hers taken also. When we lived in town with a fenced yard I thought it was safe....until I saw two hawks flying around in the neighborhood. One even landed in my tree in the back yard. Better to be safe. |
We have a fenced in backyard!! Nolee is the king of the backyard!! I do keep an eye on him though!! |
Would never leave him outside alone, fence or not. If you're in the country, there are critters and dogs running loose; if you are in the city there are the same, plus MEAN people that would take a yorkie in a flash. |
Well I'm pretty much echoing alot of the other statements here! Our yard is fenced in in the back, but we still don't let Wrigley out by herself. We live in the suburbs, but we see a hawk every once in awhile and with all the stories you hear about dogs being stolen, we just wouldn't chance it! |
Thanks! I really appreciate the replies. If I hadn't done my research I probably would have started letting her go outside as my bichon does. That's why I'm so greatful for this site...Yorkies are special and need to be taken care of accordingly. I really appreciate all the advice and will definitely follow it! |
I live in the country and have fenced in my patio. My dogs come and go through a doggie door. but if I didn't have a fenced area, I would not tie them out. |
