Rinsing their face I've heard so many horror stories over the years about Yorkies drowning relatively easily that I'm terrified when I try to wash their face during bath time. That's typically the hardest place to wash because of the tearing, so I make sure I have enough soap to do a good job. It's the rinsing that scares me. How do you rinse the face thoroughly without taking a chance of them getting water into their lungs? Or am I just being a paranoid Yorkie owner? |
I was wondering the same thing. Last time a rinsed Ellie's face she started choking.:( |
That makes me nervous too. And I'm also scared I'll get it in their ears. I just try to get a wash cloth real wet and wipe them and drip it onto their faces. |
I have that problem too....The way I've been doing it was getting a wash cloth very wet and wiping and gently squeezing the wash cloth at the same time..... |

I asked a groomer once. You tilt their head down so the water runs down their nose not up it. This helps keep the water out of the ears too, If you have to, you can hold the hair under the chin to do this. (Poor baby I know) I also keep a dry wash cloth handy to wipe their face after I rinse so they can see and feel better right away! |
It scares me when I have to wash his face for the very same reason. :( I do what Brooke suggested. I hold his beard and "pull" his head downward so that it doesn't go into his nose. He hates it (and me when I do it), but it gets his face clean without killing him...so he'll just have to deal with it lol. |
I use a squirt bottle filled with warm water to wet and rinse Lady's face. Those plastic mustard and ketchup sets they sell for picnics are great because they hold a lot of water. You can direct the stream so it doesn't get into their ears or nose. I have found that Lady doesn't mind having her face washed at all this way. |

I bathe mine in the sink and I use the sprayer and carefully spray the sides for their face. then I let them rest thier chin on a towel on the edge of the sink when I rinse their head. It works for us. |
All good tips. Thanks, you guys! Amazing how we share the same concerns! |
Excellent question -- I am also worried about the water in nose/ears. I do a combo of holding the chin down and using a very wet washcloth. |

I use small baby wash cloths and just gently wash their face and ears first. I rise the same way. This avoids getting any excess water at all in the face and ears. |
I cover Alphy's eyes and tilt his head back and only rinse the back of his head otherwise I use a washcloth. |
Moose gets his bath in the tub and we use a hand held sprayer. I mostly just use a wash cloth with J&J baby bath for his face, then rinse with the sprayer very carefully, keeping his nose/head looking down. I try very hard not to get excessive water in the ears, eyes and nose. Everyone is so worried about getting water in their ears, well I have always wonder about when they go swimming?? Water get in their ears then. What about that? |
I've also wondered too about their ears when they swim. BTW, I think there's a some very good tips on this thread. I'm very glad it got started as I have had these concerns when I bathe my pup. |
I do all I can to keep water out of eyes and ears. I have found that a soft bristle toothbrush really helps to clean those faces. |
Even though I don't do mine anymore, when I used to bathe them, I would rinse them by putting my hand over their face and nose and would do short rinses...All they do at the groomers is spray their heads, I've watched them do it, they don't take any precautions.. |
i hold morgan's face down by her beard so nothing goes up her nose. i don't worry about her ears getting water in them. I clean them when she's finished with cotton balls and q-tips. never had an ear infection yet. |
Great question I had no clue |
Great tips/advice...I always worry about this when bathing my lil one...I like the idea of the soft toothbrush...going to give that a try... |
I use a toothbrush too, but when i rinse i sort of cup my hand over their face and press down so their chin is down, they still hate it and fight me  i clean and dry their ears with Qtips and use the blowdryer a bit ! |
After Lucy's bath I always put ear cleaning solution in both ears. She has never had an ear infection. |
I use a washcloth also but it doesn't wash them too good, they are still smelly. So i cover their nose and put water on their face, just a little. It's hard though |

ok... I feel DUMB!!! I had never thought about that... but from now on I will be washing her face with a face cloth from now on!!! thank you!!1 |
i have a small fine toothed comb(actually the little one that comes with the slicker brush to clean it) anyway i use that to get all the eye gunk out of Gizzies hair along with a toothbrush around her eyes then i put my finger over her nose and quickly just run the water over her head for a quick second and it does the trick and she doesnt get choked...... |
I soften they gunk and use a eyelash/eyebrow comb. Our vet said not to get water in their ears. ziggy has had a ear infection before she was very sick. |
