It is no accident AKC is addressing this issue...they are directing it to the pet buyer.

Probably so...I'm sure that this is the reason why LOTS of breeders, registry aside, become defensive...because they are trying to hide something shady going on. Or maybe they get defensive because they DO have a nice good explanation of why their pups are not AKC reg and are tired of being thrown into a lump category w/ a bunch of money hungry, lying millers. Again, HOW does the dogs being AKC reg alone give you anything to rely on?

I'm not trying to start an argument, but the theory that "they must be better breeders w/ better dogs because they are AKC registered" gets tossed around alot and it's just not a valid/true statement.
I don't know much about this, I'm just saying what I think... if you know a lot good for you.
Of course AKC reg is not a warranty for a healthy pup, but that plus other factors contribute to choosing up a breeder that you think is the right one. Sometimes people end up getting scammed anyway. AKC does not make a breeder responsible, "AKC" reg gives you a little more peace of mind because of the reputation of the club and you hope that whomever registers with them will be more responsible, but this is not always the case.

People will lie just to get what they want. Im lost with this one.. did I miss somethin?
IMO i have had a bad experience with CKC, not to say that everyone is bad but, I bought a puppy that was pure breed for a pretty high price only to find out later that it was mixed a couple of generations back. With AKC you can do a background check on everything. They are more strick as far as qualifications. This is just my opinion. You may have only good luck with other registration companies. I dont want to in any way suggest that anyone would intently sell or breed a dog that is not up to par but, it can happen. I just have more peace of mind about AKC.

I don't claim to know any more than the next person...this is all opinion anyway, right?:) I was just wondering what your reasoning behind making your claim was...nothing more. But I understand (and agree) with alot of your statements. I guess the important thing is for people to not let themselves be fooled into believing something that isn't all it is claimed to be sometimes.

The same situation could just as easily have happened w/ AKC or another registry. I am curious though as to what kind of "bacground checks on everything" you are referring to that AKC alone offers?

Aside from that, I can completely understand where you are coming from. If I'd had a bad experience w/ a registry, I would be iffy about using them again too. I've dealt and been witness to some shady AKC business in the past so I guess I'm just aware that they have their flaws too. Although, sounds like what you actually had a bad experience with was not a registry, but a bad breeder who wasn't honest about what the dog you were getting. Did you report it to CKC? What action did they take?

Actually, this "discussion" could go on an on.

Referring back to the OPs actual question: I don't know why anyone would be offended by you asking if their dogs were AKC registered. Seems like a valid, non offensive question to me.

I don't think any breeder should be offended by asking what registry the pups are....whether or not you really care about the registry, it is still info you should know. It's like if they have a pair of jeans for sale, and get offended if you ask what brand they are.

On the other issue, my parents breed Yorkies, and have both AKC and ACA dogs....and their AKC dogs are dual-registered with ACA. This is because AKC can pull your registrations for basically any reason at all. While we take great care to keep all our paperwork in order, etc., we also don't want to take the chance that human error in filing can result in none of the dogs being registered. My Dad is also increasingly aggravated at the amount of $ they pay to AKC for registrations, and I think it is in the back of his mind to, at some point, maybe use ACA entirely. It doesn't help that we currently have an AKC registered male that was purchased, who is DEFINITELY not purebred....he looks Yorkie-Poo. So my opinion on that is that anyone can manipulate the AKC registrations just like they can the other registries. A registration is only as good as the BREEDER, not the registry.

Sorry everyone, I didn't mean to start an argument.
In my opinion I was upset by her getting so defensive and argumentive with me for the simple reason that I asked what her pups were registered with. She named off all these different registries. So I emailed her back and asked if they were AKC registered, she said mom and dad were, so I emailed her back again to ask if the pups would be AKC regisitered and she got defensive and said No I have no reason to and then explained that no one cares or knows what AKC is. That just made me stop and wonder about the pups plus she wants to meet me and not have me come see them. This is red flags to me.
I only look for AKC because I know there are LESS puppy mills with AKC because they check on larger breeders. This is from first hand experience with my past mentors when I bred my shelties years ago( I was never a big breeder but my two mentors were). They had to comply with many rules and had akc on their butt all the time.

A long time ago I went to see about a German Sheperd pup and I asked the old farmer running the ad if his pups had papers. He said," Nope, I had a dog once that I got papers for but he couldn't read them, he just peed all over them".

Actually, the AKC not only has mandatory inspections of breeders who register over seven litters a year, but also does random inspections of smaller breeders now.

I agree with you 100%. Although not perfect, the AKC is the only registry I would deal with when buying a puppy. The other "alternative" registries that were formed when the AKC got stricter rules are full of puppy mills and backyard breeders.

It's important to realize though that the AKC has more than it's fair share of BYBs and millers too.

I like it when someone ask's me that question... it tells me that this person cares about what is behind the puppy they are looking at. I'm not saying that AKC is a saint when it comes to some things... but the others like ACA (not canadian) and APRI don't do enough in my opinion to make sure that the puppies being registered are from the parents that is listed. Its too easy for someone to say ok my litter is out of this dam and this sire and these registries just take it for granted. All of my babies are AKC registered and I am very proud of that fact so by all means ask away... Terri
