Learning to sow dog clothes? Heyas, Last time I sowed I was like 15, I'm 25 now, anyone have any online tutorials/resources or books I could possibly get/read so I can learn? I've seen all the beautiful outfits alot of you guys have made and I'm itching to try it myself :) Sorry if this is such a newb question lol |
The best suggestion I can give you is to check out the pattern books for some simple patterns -- Hancocks is having a sale on Butterick patterns this weekend - $.99 each. Buy some cheap fabric and practice. If you mess up, just thow it away before you get too frustrated and try again..... Good luck -- it is always a GRAND thing to see young people sewing!!!!! |
I've made some dresses but I buy almost all of Lacy's clothes. I'm not much help...I just kindof taught myself and made my own patterns. A lot of dog dresses are made based off the same pattern. Good Luck |

1 Attachment(s) i'm about to that myself, as i just bought a new pattern. my BEST advice; simplicity patterns. they are the easiest. i have the one (the # escapes me right off) with the dogs dressed up in patriotic, halloween and easter outfits. that was by far the EASIEST pattern. I'm 20, so i think you can do it ;) also; but the remnants at a fabric store. Thats the best way to go. The pattern will always call for more fabric than you need, just keep that in mind :) here are some dresses i made, my FIRST time attempting |

a sewing machine is ideal, i did have to hand stitch my lace on one dress as an after thought and it was tiresome. my machine is a cheap wal mart machine; well it's a brother, but it was very inexpensive. we are currently debating upgrading to an embroidering machine :) |
If you are looking for a sewing machine....You could post on your local freecycle??? or even craigslist.... Then if you decide this is something you are going to enjoy...Buy what you would like.... Joyce |

wal mart has them. as does hobby lobby. those two i know for sure have them. hancock fabrics and other fabric stores may possibly have them. |
3 Attachment(s) I've used Simplicity 3925 and tweaked it a bit. Some people like their dresses a little longer than they have them, I just learned how to make them longer. 1. Dresses I made with the Pattern 2. The pattern 3. LilyGrace (Jenn 218's baby) in a longer version. This pattern is easy and you can do alot of things with it! You definetely need a machine, though!! It looks like the pattern didn't attach. I will find the link you can click on. |
Thanks everyone, I will look into getting a cheap machine to start with :) and hopefully once I make something I'll take pictures to show you how horrible at it I am!! :) I'm actually looking for a pattern for a tshirt, since Henry is a male, and I figured a shirt would be easy to start with? |
Here is a free resizeable dog pattern. I have made this little vest for my boy before! It's a good one for just starting out!http://www.sewing.circleofcrafters.c...stpattern.html |

You're welcome! I mainly use this little pattern to make fleece "sweaters" for Scout, he hates anything restrictive. If you cut it out of fleece, the only sewing you have to do is Velcro on the closures. OR You can make it look more finished if you cut it out a little bigger than you really need and cut two pieces and sew it right sides together leaving a small opening to turn it right side out. Then iron and sew on velcro closures! Easy and cute! |
Just went to Joann fabrics and they have the simplicity patterns 5 for $5.00. I got 4 diffrent packs... This will be my 2nd attempt at using patterns . I made my daughter a dress when she was 4 and needless to say I didnt do so well Had to crump her lil arms in different positions to get her in it lol.... She wore it once... |
Another way to get a pattern is to buy something at Petsmart or Petco that you really like. Lay the outfit down on newspaper and make your own pattern. I am forever buying a cute little dress and then using it for a pattern and making my own alterations and adjustments. It is really lots of fun once you get into it. My favorite place to shop now is the fabric store. How sad! |

i just finished another Sophie dress; unfortunately my attention was into "My big, fat fabulous wedding" (those girls are ridiculous.) and it came out a tad bit small. Oh well, she'll get a few days use out of it the way she's growing  haha |
If you want to learn to sew for your furbaby I would recommend Simplicity patterns. JoAnns is having a sale thru Monday on Simplicity patterns 5 for $5. |
thanks everyone for the awesome advice! gonna head to the store tomorrow and see what I can gather up :) thank you again!! you guys are awesome! |
Thanks everyone :) Thanks everyone! I'm actually getting a sewing machine and I just can't wait, gahhhhh!! I'm so excited now wonder if I can go to bed... :( |
