When Does Catch Me if You Can Stop? Does anyone have any helpful hints regarding the Yorkie game of "Catch Me if You Can"? Remi is pretty good at his obedience commands while on his lead, but when he is free he just loves to do the opposite of what we expect. Remi comes when he is called (only if there is a treat in our hand and he knows the difference). He loves running through the house tempting us to follow. We refrain from making the chase a game, but he continues in his happy-go-lucky way, enjoying himself thoroughly. He is walked and exercised every day, but the Catch Me game seems to be the highlight of his day. Thanks in advance for letting me vent! :) :) :) |
ahhh i know the feeling martini runs away when we call her she finds the hiding spots where we cant get to her...its crazy but at the same time cute lol |
I think sometimes it never goes away. I never trust Lacy off-leash unless we are in a secure place. She's so fast and doesn't listen or come when called. |
I had the same problem with Gracie. She is still not the best, but she is getting better. In some way you must be reinforcing the behavior that you do not want. I stopped using the word "come" and just called her by name, "Gracie". I just followed her and kept calling "Gracie" until she stopped, typically that was when I had her cornered. Sometimes I had a treat to give her when she stopped for me. She still won't "come", but instead she will stop and wait for me to pick her up. Just make sure that every time you are trying to catch your little one that it is not for something unpleasant and you are not using that time to scold him. The other option is to keep him in a gated off area so he can't get away from you. |
A.J does this too and he is 1 1/2 old. He listens so great when he's on a leash and we're on walks, but the minute we get back into the house, his selective hearing kicks in. If I have a treat in my hand he is the perfect little angel though. |
Chachi quit doing that when he was about 1 1/2 |
Duchess is only 16 weeks and def loves that game. Just the other day, she zipped out the door behind my son and we probably played that game for about 15 darn minutes...I tried my best to not be angry but wanted to pounce on her like a fox...everytime we almost had her, she took off! lol. She loves running around bushes and trees so we always end up having to double team her and my son will bring out a piece of sliced turkey!!! It's funny afterwards but since I was running late to work, I was not all that amused that particular day!! lol My other 2 girls, Diva & Foxxy, will just sit on the porch like "awww, you're gonna get it when momma gets you"...LOL Gotta Luv em! |
Oh Marilyn, I laughed when I read this. I can so picture Remi running around trying to get away from you!!!:D |
Gizmo is 11 months old and I would appreciate it if you would let me know the answer to this question when you find out. |

That's funny - but the truth! :D My Max doesn't think the game stops unless he's sleeping and then if you you make a move he's up and ready to start all over again! On the other hand, my Mia seems to have settled down since she was 1 1/2 as well. I think it depends on their age and personality - but then again... they are terriers! |
Oh yea we know all about this game :) When I just got the puppy I thought it was cute but then I realized that it will be hard to train him to come to me when called. I quit that game and every time he would try to play that game when being called I completely ignore then go sit on my sofa and wait until he is going on his pet stairs on the sofa. I started on training him to come to me with treats just like you. Then I would give him treats every other time and slowely it started to work :) Maxi is still at training but dramatically improved. I cant really use "come" word when calling him because now he associates that word with the game so I say get your butt over here lol |
Jamie is 6 1/2 months and he will come when his name is called IF he feels like it. However, we do have an understanding. Like with skin kids, if I get that certain tone in my voice and say "Jamison!" he will come directly in front of me and lay down and wait for me to pick him up. You just have to show em you mean business... sorta... |
Snick's played this game once (he is about 10 months old now). I have a 6 year old boxer who is perfect and listening, I don't even need to use a leash. I am lucky because Snickers has followed in his lead. He will follow Seamus everywhere so if Snickers starts to wonder off, I will call him and Seamus at the same time and Seamus will come and Snickers will follow, then I will praise them both. I think that Snickers was trained so easily because he had a great role model. |
I swear with each post I read, I was reading about Lucy! I guess I just have to realize that she's not intending to disobey us off-leash, she's just having fun!! We don't mind chasing her around because we get our exercise as well, hehe. |
I hate you tell you this, but I don't think it EVER ends with Yorkies... I have two 5 1/2 month olds, a 10 month old, a 1 1/2 year old, two 2 year olds, and a three year old...and it doesn't get ANY easier...:p Some of them are there in a second "yes mommy what did you need??" And others wouldn't come if I were screaming at the top of my lungs...but if I have food they're suddenly little Roadrunners...lol    |
I had to laugh at these posts. Gracie has always been our best furbaby. Now, Katie is a totally different story... She loves this game. She is 6 yrs old now and is slowly growing out of this game. She is always on her leash because we still don't trust her. :p |
Didn't know you were writing a comedy thread, did ya? ;) We are very careful about never "chasing". My hubby likes to run and play in the house with Coby, but my rule is "you have to let Coby chase you; you can't chase him". The problem is that if DH is running around the table letting Coby chase him, somehow Coby knows how to adjust the speed, either faster or slower, until suddenly without my hubby's knowledge, he is chasing Coby. Damn smart york's. |

Tonight was a crazy night to say the least....I go to take Bleu to go potty at midnight and low and behold this is TMI but it thundered and Bleu took off running.. He never has done that... Me in my night attire I have to go to get him .... It is raining and Im just panicing it is about to get worse.. He finally stopped and looked back and when he did I started runnning towards the opposite direction and instead of chasing him he came CHASING ME thank goodness! We are both soaking wet and I hope noone got a PANTY SHOT but I was not about to let my baby run terrified and get lost...Panties and all I was following him... WHEW I am glad that is over.. He is getting a leash tomorrow. |

We talked about this little game in my puppy class. Pretty much everyone had the same story. The one thing that the instructor could not stress enough was to NOT say the word "come" as you are chasing your puppy. She says it teaches them that "come" means "let's play chase!" It is super-cute when they find a treasure and take off, with their little tails wagging! |
Pixie is just awful! i don't chase her anymore now..it's pointless..i'll never catch her anyway and she thinks its a fabby game to play.. i'll wait till she comes to me then give her a treat..seems to be working. |
It's a cute fun game until your baby somehow got out near street/traffic then you have no choice but to play their game. I know my neighbors think I am crazy running zig zag throuh their yards when my baby is so small they cannot see I am chasing him. It really isnt funny. I too would love advice to not reinforce bad behavior |

STAY. Teach your babies to stay. I truly believe this is the answer. Don't wait until it's too late...teach them to stay now...today. All I have to do is say the word "stay"...and Winston immediately stops what he is doing and lays down. It's for his own good and safety. Then when you master the stay command...teach them to "leave it". If Winston gets into something that I don't want him to have I tell him to stay...he lays down...then I tell him to leave it...and whatever he has in his mouth he puts down. What a good boy I have...I am so proud of him. |

Also do not play into his chase game. When you tell him to come and he runs in the opposite direction you should just turn around and walk away. the game is no fun for him if you ignore him and do not make a motion to follow. Then when he finally comes to you, give him a treat. Also when your not doing a training session and he just happens to walk up to you, on his way over say the word come and when he gets to you give him a treat. So by his coming over to you on his own he'll hear the word come. |
