OMG! I just had the scare of my life!! I was answering a thread on YT and suddenly Rebel started SCREAMING! I jumped up and he was dragging the heat vent from the floor around. He'd gotten his tags hung in the little slats in the vent and couldn't get them free. I had to hold him and get my son to take his collar off to release him. The tags are still hung up in the vent. What if this had happened when we weren't home! OMG I'm shaking.......... |
Wow, that's so scary! Poor Rebel. That's the third time I heard a story like that in a couple days! |
Oh, how frightening:( Guess all these babies are at the heater vents trying to stay warm. Sounds like you'll need to leave his collar and tags off when he's alone. |
That's why my dogs never wear collars in the house! so much they can get hung on... Donna |

Hugs to little Rebel - good thing he made such a ruckus - they're really good about letting us know when something is wrong aren't they ? Poor baby - he must have been pretty scared too dragging around that vent.... thanks for posting this - I'm off to check this apartment and see if we have any vents that pose a danger.. |
We had a scare like that recently with Scooter. You know the little round wire that holds their tags? Well, I have Berber carpet and he got it hung in one of the loops! Of course, now I have a run in the carpet I'll have to get fixed. I took the metal ring off, and used fishing line to hold his tags. Luckily, we don't have floor vents or I'd have to worry about his tags getting hung in them. How scary! |
oh my. At least you were home. WOW poor Rebel .. is he ok ??? Poor baby .. I am taking collars off they are just dangerous. |
that would be scary1 i worry about my pets having weird stuff happen to them-my BF thinks i am nuts! I am glad you were home! |

I've always been afraid not to have ID on Lucy and Rebel because so many of our babies have gone missing. Lucy and Rebel have halters and I'm about to take Lucy's collar off too and put their halters on. Rebel is fine now, but I had to hold him for a long time til he calmed down. He was terrified. |
This sort of thing seems to be very common. I don't have collars for my yorkies or my boston, they only wear harnesses when they go outside. My big dogs have collars of course but they aren't always wearing them either. Thankfully they aren't runners so i'm fairly secure in them going in our fenced in backyard without them. I'm very glad your little guy is ok, that has got to be very scary for him and you. |
poor lil guy...i have read a few threads regarding this...maybe its best his collar isnt on in the house just to be safe...i would have reacted the way u did also...thank goodness u were home |
How scary:eek: ! I wonder if there is some kind of cover that can be put over the heat vents that still let the heat come through, but eliminate the openings large enough to catch the tags:confused: I'm sure there must be something, even if you were to buy some mesh-type stuff and cover them yourself;) |
Phew Poor little thing! At least he wasn't hurt. |
I know how scary having hanging pet tags can be when they get caught up in something. I have these for my babies. They slide on the collar and don't hang down. I never have their collars on when they are alone but they do wear them when we are outside. Check them out. http://gotags.com/slide_pet_tag.htm |
I use a breakaway cat collar on Murphy. I cut it to fit his neck and then sewed it back together. I am always afraid Murphy will run out the door when I get the mail, etc. So I want him to wear a collar. He has gotten his tags caught a few times and his collar came right off. |
Wow that was scary!! Hope you figurer out something! |

Poor Rebel..so glad that you were home when this happened. Izzy doesn't wear her tags in the house. But you might try these....I have a few floor vents too but I purchased these plastic hoods that are supposed to direct the heat towards you rather than the ceiling. They cover just enough where your baby can't get tags caught in them. I can't for the life of me remember where I got them since it was so long ago but I bet Home Depot or Lowes carry something similar. It's clear plastic with built in magnets that hold it to the vent. Maybe even Google them...they were not expensive either.;) |
I know what I know how you are feeling exactly, because boobah, the larger yorkie, was electrocuted on the 4th of July! She was gnawing on the air purifier cord and bit through the rubber to the metal part and got the shock of her life! She was screaming and luckily I was able to get the wire away from her mouth. I rushed her to the vet (which was on a Sunday) and they kept her overnight. Luckily, she just got a scare, but the Dr. said I had a very, very lucky dog. Thank God your baby is fine. I tell you, we have to keep an eagle eye on these little ones! :animal-pa [/B] |

I have ordered the tags that were posted earlier and they are no longer wearing their collars. When the new tags come in I'm going to check them out, but they won't be wearing them in the house anymore. |
Something like this happened to Tye but it was the small rug from our foyer. We came home to find that he had it attached to his tags (because sometimes he rolls around on the rug like a mad man). I have no idea exactly how long it had been a part of him but it was scary, so I can't imagine the vent being attached. |
poor baby ,glad you were home when it happened. |
((((((Rebel)))))) Thank goodness you were home. Mine have never had collars. Kinda glad of that now after reading this.....scary! |

I know how frightening this is. It happened to both of my furbabies w/in a couple of days of eachother. I am just thankful that I crate mine. I could not imagine what would of happened had I not been home and they were roaming free! |
Thank Goodness you were home! I heard about this happening to someone else so I took the collars off Bailey & Angel. I also bought them breakaway collars that Angel found she could get her mouth under and then chew through the elastics. So now I only put them on them when we are going out. |
That is very scary! Poor Rebel! So glad he's okay now. |
oh that is horrible . . .am so glad you were home when it happened . Poor Rebel . . .he is probably quite mischievous like my Tiger and always gets into things and accidents  :p Please give him a hug from me and my babies. :) |
