HELP--my yorkie wakes me up all night    I have a 6.5 month-old male yorkie. We have had him since October and love him a lot, but he WILL NOT let us sleep at night, and it's killing us. We've read the books, but they're no help. We put him in his crate at bedtime and make sure he's gone potty just before. Sometimes he whines, sometimes he sleeps for an hour and then whines. We tried letting him stay in there all night, but he 1. whines the whole time and/or 2. gets so upset he poops and rolls in it. We've tried letting him in the bed, which is what he wants, but he still runs around the bed all night and wakes us up. He runs around until we're forced to take him out. We cut off his food and water earlier and earlier, but he still wants to go once or twice a night--every night. I know they're social and need to sleep in the same room with us, but we have started putting him in the guest bathroom where we keep him when we're working because we just need to sleep so badly. He hates it. I love him, but I'm SO tired and frustrated. HELP!!!!!! |
have u tried playing with him and wearing him out?...and u can make him fall asleep wit u and then put him in his crate..martini sleeps in her bed there are times she cries at nite and i tell her its time for bed i leave a night light on for her in the room she sleeps rt next to my bedroom so i can see her and watch her..try leaving a lil radio on and some toys so he can play |
welcome to the wonderful world of yorkies.. i had the same problem, i was up every hour. lexi still wakes me up, shes in and out of the covers all night long.. i realized that you have to make these little buggers as tired as you can and believe me it works. play really hard with .. make him run run run and you will tire him out and he will sleep |
Oh, hang tight. You've definatly got a Yorkie though. He's still a baby, and you've got a little ways to go. At that age, mine still had to potty in the night time too. Can you play and run around the house with him just before bed time? Have you tried the crate next to your bed? And when he starts to fuss bring him to do potty? |
Thank, you all! I really appreciate the help. We have tried wearing him out, but I wasn't sure when he'd had too much. He kind of pants and breathes heavy and sticks his tongue out after just a few rounds of "toss the ball." Did this get better as your dogs got older, too? When did they stop? How long do you think we should exercise him? I REALLY appreciate this and I'm glad I found this great site! |

You may be surprised to find out just how much exercise it takes to wear these little guys out! Have you seen the 'yorkie on the treadmill' video?? They really require quite intense exercise (watching for any signs of hypoglycemia, of course) He's a solo dog, I take it? Does he have friends to play with? You need to do very active games with them, not just always quiet them down with chewy treats, even though that is always soooo much easier! What are you doing with him for activities now? We can help with some suggestions if you need them, Last weekend I was in bed with bronchitis for two days, and by that 2nd night, Purl was up all night chewing on my hair (both cute and annoying  ) She just had too much energy in her. Something to keep in mind... is that if they are sleeping all day, then they'll probably be up all night. When you guys get home, he should be feed, taken for a walk (if you can) and played with. I know when I get home sometimes, all Meka wants to do is sit on my lap and fall asleep. And though its cute, it created a problem when I was ready for bed and she was now wide awake. So I make sure that she's up and playing until its time for us to go to bed. We also had to get her use to commands... like GO TO BED, or NIGHT NIGHT TIME that help her know its time to go to sleep...and even if she's not sleep right away, she knows to stay in that bed. He's still young, but be persistant and dominant... Think your lil guy might think he's the leader of the pack and you'll need to change that to make progress with him.... Oh... and :welcome4: to YT :) |
lol See how common of a problem this is? We all posted at the same time, haha! |
these lil guys are like the energizer battiers they dont stop sometimes i have to calm martini down to take a break cause she is to hyped up and i get worried so i have to calm her down for a few and then shes rt back at running an playing like a lunatic lol...gotta love them |
This is probably going to sound weird, but what food are you feeding him? Many low quality foods have numerous ingredients that not only are weird, but create a hyper, restless dog. We play with Ranger from the second I get home (between 4 and 5) until the minute we go to bed. No naps, no resting, just play play play. He just turned 7 months, but we have been doing this for months now. We also take all three dogs on long walks (at least 45min) and I never carry him on those walks. I need him tired or he wakes us up in the middle of the night. I sounds like your pup just has too much pent-up energy. I wouldn't worry about doing too much with him, at 6.5 months he is almost structurally done growing and he needs to start getting regular exercise, which will keep him healthy for life. Good luck!!!!!! |
dont you worry,, it does get better im promise.. be patient |
Ha! It makes me feel so much better to know there are other people who have had this problem. We try to take him for walks, but he usually cries the whole time and it's pretty sad. He is at least leash trained, though. We like to wear him out by throwing his toys across the room and he runs for them, or we drag them across the floor and he chases them. I think the best we've thought of so far when my husband and I throw a toy across the room at each other and Cricket runs between us. We let him have the toy a little here and there so he doesn't get frustrated. Any other good tucker-em-out games, new friends? :) :) :) |
Oh, and for food we give him that Blue stuff for little dogs. It's organic, yadda-yadda, and we picked it because our book said to give him food that has meat product, not corn or wheat, as a first ingredient. We feed him twice a day--at 7:30 a.m. and at about 6:00 p.m. But his poo schedule is also all over the place--is that normal? How many times a day do your dogs go twosie? Sorry if these are newbie questions. This is my first-ever dog!!! :) |
I usually run around the house, they chase me and I hide and then go nuts looking for me ;) |
Try leaving a radio on at night for him..is he pee pad trained or outside? If he's pee pad trained, maybe try an xpen.. |

as they get older they will be more on schedule. lexi goes on schedule right after she eat at 630am and at 530pm when i get home ,but peepees on her pad during the day if she has to. |
I don't pretend to be an authority on this, but how about giving him a very little Benedril before bedtime (please check with vet first). Also, I've heard putting a ticking clock in their crate works. If all else fails, you might want to think about getting him a companion. We have two little girls and they sleep in separate crates next to each other. The younger one was about 10 weeks old when we brought her home and there was never a squeak out of her at night. Both the girls remain perfectly still all night long and look forward to going into their "den" for the night. I wish you luck. You need your sleep. I'm sure with all these suggestions from Yorkie Talk, you'll find one that works for you and for your little guy. |
I tried googling this, but what is a tickling clock? Thanks for all the encouragement and advice! :) |

Haha! That's good. I feel really silly now. And I'm pretty glad, because the only things I found were of a, let's say, rather "illicit" nature. And I was wondering how something like that would help the dog sleep. Bwahaha. Ticking clock. Got it. We also have one of those noisemakers that does a simulated heartbeat sound, which works sometimes. |

Tell me about it  Roxy would never get up out of bed. She is 3 yrs. old now, but for the past 8 months, I get up and bring them in 'their room' where the pee pads are. They stand there as if they are still sleeping  - I say and point to the pad 'GO POTTY' - they look at me like I am speaking chinese. After a few minutes my own bladder is going to burst so I leave them and go to the bathroom myself, once back out I find that she has run back to my bed, barked at my hubby to pick her and she is back under the blankets - WITHOUT peeing  - I don't get it ??? How in the world or WHY in the world does she want to hold it in longer  ...oh well...she eventually goes, once I get her back up and going again - but it's so bizarre :( |

Funny Fur Babies :D |
4 Attachment(s) OMG, I am going through the same thing with Otis he is 7 months old and we have to play every nite for about 2 hours before bed so that he won't wake me up every 1-2 hours a nite to go potty and he now wants to go out just to get a treat when he comes back in, so we are trying to break him from that to.. It's like he thinks he is tricking me into giving him a treat when he just wants to go out to (pretend to go potty!) But any way he sleeps in our bed at nite and wakes me up licking my face making a really cute noise and I know he wants to get up. This is so funny because I was going to ask if any one else had ever had the same problems with the furbabies not wanting to sleep all nite. You just beat me to it! Thanks you for asking for me..... Just thought I would share some pictures with you all.... 1. Oreo and Otis asleep in her bed, he lays with her in her bed instead of his bed. 2. Just him asleep in her bed. Look at that cute little face.... 3. We were talking, he was telling me something really important. LOL! 4. JUst his normal I want you to do something for me look.... |
it will get better, remember they are like a baby.i tried to keep my furbaby up most of the day so he would sleep at night after a few days it worked. |

Last night was better! Last night was much better! Cricket still ended up in the bed and was fidgety off and on, but he didn't run around the bed constantly like usual and didn't cry to go out! I SLEPT LAST NIGHT!!!! We got home yesterday and took him for a huge walk at this park behind our house. It was really cold, but we walked and ran around with him, and I realized how seriously out of shape I am. But it felt good, too! I think it will be great for us to get some exercise with him from now on. We played with him relentlessly the entire night, throwing toys back and forth and playing hide-and-seek. I've never seen his tongue wag so much, which is what he does when he's tired. This is so funny, but by about 9:30, he couldn't keep his eyes open! He's probably never been so tired in his entire life. We didn't want him to sleep yet, so we kept trying to wake him up. We were playing with him, and he would just keep going to sleep no matter what we did. We played with his arms and made him look like he was dancing, which he usually doesn't like, but he just about slept through that! Thank you all for the life-changing advice! I think it's going to help me get more exercise and be healthier, too! I'm thrilled! |
