Long hair in the summer? I'm having a dilemma.. I wanted to finally grow out Kayah's coat (I get it cut it short the past two summers)... My boyfriends parents are now saying.. oh you have to get her cut soon and so on.. And although I do agree with them and think she's going to be HOT... I so badly don't want to get it cut:confused: I see so many beautiful yorkies (from warmer places) who don't have their hair cut real short... doesn't this bother them?? |
I've heard the argument both ways. Some say to cut short in the summer to keep them cool. Others say not to cut, because the hair helps keep them cool. I'm not sure what to think. |
i think its all on how u want it...i know that it keeps them warm in the winter but if in the summer they are in ac alot then longer should be better. but again its ur preferance on what u want...hope this helps |
Its all about what you prefer... Mekas hair was cut short this past summer... And because it gets way past 100 where we live, it seemed as though it helped her stay cool. But again, its about what works best for you and your pup :) |
We have had Magic in full coat for almost two years now and we see some HOT days here in Texas and she just tends to stay more indoors on the hotter days and drinks lots of water...the first summer she was with us, we cut her down but the next year we didn't want to as her coat had gotten so long, so we just make sure that water is always available and cool places for her to lay and she does great. Her coat doesn't bother her at all...we just have to bath her more often as she sweats more in the summer. But I think it is up to you as to whether you want to leave her hair long or cut it back...your little one will adapt to whatever the weather is!! |
I keep London's hair long and in the summer if they get too hot i would just carry around a bottle with water to spray them. |
I keep Jewels hair long but shes really not outside much. |
so they do get hot in it (I know dumb question)... I just thought they sweat it out or something... lol:rolleyes: We love being outside in the summer.. and if it gets too hot, we will put Kayah inside... but she cries and cries to come out to me... We have a pool.. so I'll put Kayah in there with me but she HATES water.. lol Normally what I'll do.. is put her in with me.. then give her straight to my boyfriend's dad.. but when I'm not home.. they don't even dare to put her in the pool... so she's pretty much stuck in the heat.. I guess baby's just going to have to get cut.. thanks guys! |
I always got my girls hair cut in the summer, but this year I'm not gonna! We don't go outside for any length of time when it's really hot, and I figure they'll be more comfy in the air-conditioning with long hair. So, sexiixtc do what you want, Kayah is your furbaby. |
i keep lexi's hair long for the winter but for last summer i had it cut. its just so much easier.. shes outside more often, at the beach all the time and i have to bathe her more often, and i do think she likes it being cleaner and shorter. |
Dogs don't sweat they pant and the heat can be dangerous. Long hair is not necessarily dangerous but I don't let my two out if the temp is over 85 degrees except early in the AM or later in the PM just to poop. They are in the AC when it is too hot. Also one is a cold weather freak and the other is a warm weather freak. So it is good to know what they can stand and judge accordingly. I find it hard to see my little girl (or my little guy...but he can with stand heat more) panting feverishly in the hot weather.....it really can be a danger. Tina |
From what I have heard it is really only an issue with the cotton coats as the silk coats are much thinner so they don't get so hot.I have a male with silky hair and I have never cut his hair and it can get pretty hot in Michigan and he is fine.I say if you are wanting to let her hair grow out do so and just keep extra water around if that is a concern for you. good luck:) |
