| she WON'T bark I have a 6 month old pup, have had her for a few months now. I was hoping she would serve as an automatic doorbell/motion sensor for our front porch and yard, but so far she just doesn't bark at much. She will give a little woof at us if we ignore her too long, and a friend gave me a pig's ear for her that she was afraid of and that got her all wound up and barking at it (hilarious), but not at people. When I have treats I can get her to bark on command with some coaxing, and I'm going to try to teach her to do it when somebody walks onto the front porch. Question is, do they not start barking at people/strangers until they are older? What age do they generally start this? I've tried to search the forums but most people are complaining about the opposite problem, too much barking, and that is another reason I'm baffled. Don't get me wrong, I didn't get her for the purpose of being a watchdog, but I was hoping it would be a happy side effect. Especially since our basset hound is even less helpful at alerting us to people, unless we happen to see her tail wag lol. |

| don't have an answer to your question, but thought I would say> I have the same unlikely pair. A Bassett and a Yorkie. Vet thought it was a pretty funny combination when I took Preston in for his first visit. Bailey had to go for her shots also, so there we sat (Bailey the Basset, Preston the Yorkie, my daughter and myself) when he came in. Should have seen the look on his face. HA HA |

| no bark to please don't bark Tori didn't bark until she was 9 months old. We had a black lab / springer mix that used to bark for her. Our lab mixed died that month (12 yrs old) and now Tori (1 year old now) barks every time she is startled.

| Welcome to you 2 newbies. I think if you just give him time, he will start barking...and then you will probably be saying "will you please be quiet!!!"

| Teddi didn't bark until she stayed in the doggie hospital in November where there were barking dogs and now she barks!! If she hears the slightest noise she barks. She picked up some bad habits from the hospital. It also made her more jumpy if she thinks she hears something.

| Odie didn't bark either till he was several months old and we even had our older female then too and she certainly barked alot and still does. Just one day out the blue Odie barked, think he scared himself and from then on we can't get him to be quiet. I'm sure one day he'll surprise you. LOL |

Living My Yorkie Dream Donating Member | I remember thinking when we first got Lucky and then Lexie....."Gosh, do you think they will ever bark" or "I wonder what his/her bark will sound like". Well, believe me.........we found out that they do bark and it sounds LOUD. So.....give her time......I'm sure she'll find her voice and then speak her mind!

| I have one 9 year old male that never barks. I think I have heard him bark maybe 3 times his whole life. Enjoy the peace and quiet. I have a couple of 4 month old pups now that bark and bark and bark. It is hard to watch TV because they are running, playing and barking. |

| my little man hardly barks either. He might let out a little bark if he wants to get on the couch and we ignore him just to see what he''ll do and that is what he does...a little bark! I like that though, that he is a quiet dog.

| When Chip was living with my sister he didn't bark, because her older yorkie is a constant barker. When he moved in with me, he only barked on rare occassions. Now with Harley here, they both bark at trucks and people approaching the door. Otherwise they don't walk around the house barking.

| I'm not sure at what age they start barking, but enjoy the quiet for as long as you can.
