We have a 7 year old pitt and a 8 year old Boxer and two 3 year old Yorkies. I do not let my Pitt and Boxer be in the same rooms with my bigger dogs, no matter how sweet they are it only takes one time , accidents happen and its best just not to give them a chance, they are so big and so strong and with these Yorkies attitudes it would only take one time and you would have a dead dog on your hands. No matter how sweet these bigger dogs are it still can happen. I would never let my bigger dogs go becaus ethey wa shere first, but they will never be in the same rooms togther. they are just to big for these small Yorkies even with playing. |
I agree with most people on here, it depends on the dog, how he was bred, trained, etc. Some pits can be really nice. My parents have a boxer and they are known to be really good dogs, but he can actually be mean and cannot be around people he doesn't know (he's great w/ smaller animals and dogs though). The other boxers we had were great with people though, so there's always an exception to any breed. I know of some pits that are really nice, but then you always hear these horror stories of them. Just make sure you are able to do all the training necessary, and if you are going to let them play together, don't leave them unsupervised. If I personally was going to get a pit I would have to do extensive research on the breeders lines, a lot of training, etc just to be safe, but I still probably wouldn't get one while I have my yorkies. Other breeds of larger dogs (such as boxers) I would get while I have my yorkies. |

I would agree with all of the posters that said it matters on how the dog was raised and their temperament. My sister has a pit/boxer who is quite possibly the sweetest dog I have ever met. Saying that, I would never leave Cooper alone with her. I know that the pit would NEVER hurt Cooper on purpose, but due to the difference in size anything can happen. |
German shepherds get a bad rap too...I have a shepherd, she's 1 1/2 and wouldn't hurt a flea..Now, she still has puppy in her, so I have to watch her, and I never let her out to play when the small dogs are out..the last time my son brought his yorkie over(gingers brother 6 mos and barely 3 lbs. the big dogs were outside playing, I opened the door to give my hubby the big dogs food, and my sons little yorkie got out, both big dogs(also have a golden retriever) came flying up to him, it scared me to death, but,all they did was sniff him and then ran off again.. |
My niece has to yorkies, one is a female and the other is a male. Her husband just purchased a pitt. They play toghether well now. I have never been around a pitt. My daughter took Rockie over for play time and Rockie was growling at the pitt and of course the pitt growled back. My daughter immediately picked up Rockie. It sounds like my yorkie started that encounter. |
regarding the post I copied below (I don't know how you all copy posts like you do so I did it this way)- you read the magazine wrong. You missed the word "least" lol. Golden Retrievers are known far and wide as the #1 "LEAST" likely to bite! I believe it's all in the training. Also the temperament of the puppy plays a big part. |

I absolutely love all dogs - pures & mutts. I actually wanted to be a Vet when i grew up - But had a Baby early in life & stayed home with him instead of going to college. My brother has had both 2 Pits & 3 Rotties - he never had a problem with them. So I have been around them before - I Just never had a large dog before. |
