Help, he's itching and running around crazy trying to stop it! I bath once a week. I don't know where or who told me that I could bath every week since they don't come with much instructions but I believe my vet said I could. However, my yorkie is itching and I can't tell why. It happens at least 4-5 times a day. We use the K9 Advantix every single month on time so we don't think it is fleas, we have searched his body for tics and we don't see anything. He puts his tail in between his legs and runs around real fast to each couch or wall and rubs up against it so that he can stop itching. It's kinda sad because it seems like I can't help him because I don't know what to do. My Petsmart trainer asked how often do I wash him and I said every week. She told me I am probably drying out his skin and that I am not suppossed to wash him weekly more like once a month. There is no way I am going to wash him just once a month but I hope I am not drying out his skin. I really don't think it's dry skin because he scratches his face, by his ear, and his back legs. I don't even wash his face like that for it to be dry skin and I don't think it is ear mites either. I can't tell what it might be, any suggestions? |
He could be allergic to something, either food, environmental, etc. |

Also, when you bathe, if you don't get all the shampoo/conditioner out, that will make them itch...I only have my dogs bathed by the groomer about 2-3 times a year..they are strictly inside, but, none of them have ever itched...you may want to get your pup checked out by the vet |

I'm thinking allergies too. Your vet can do testing from a blood sample if that is the case. It could be dry skin though. Do you have a humidifyer in your house. The air is usually pretty dry in the winter and I know my skin starts itching. If he is rubbing his face do you think it could be a tooth issue? Best thing to do is go see your vet. |

The pet hospital gave my pup Benadryl a few months back. Could you be bathing your pup too often? I was bathing Sass every week and she started getting flakes and itching. She was always scratching and I worried she had fleas or allergies, so I brought her to the vet. She thought I was bathing her too much and drying her skin out. She doesn't have long hair, is an inside dog (even potties inside on pee-pads) and I go 2 - 3 weeks between baths now. I brush her daily and wash her little face and eyes daily too. I use baby wipes after she potties. All the itching problems and flakes are gone now. I hope you pup feels better soon. |
I think I will limit her baths to every 2-3 weeks. Your vet gave her Benadryl because of the itching? I think I might do that. He has no flakes but itches like crazy so since everyone is saying it's ok, I think I will try it. |
Be sure you don't give her too much. You can call your vet and they will tell you how much to give her. |
Once a week isn't that much. With food allergies it would be common for them to have itchy ears, chin and paws. What are you feeding? Since it just started in the middle of winter (if it is cold where you are) I wouldn't think it is environmental unless the weather is drying her skin out. I think you might see signs of that though. |
