It's that time! It's time for Lilly to be spayed and her teeth to be removed. We've called our vet and they had the lady that would be doing it call us back and answer any questions we had. She said that the blood work isn't needed and most owners don't do it this early in a dog's life. I'm so confused and I've never had a dog before, Lilly's my first! So, I'm looking for all information and things I need for getting her spayed, anything you have would be greatly welcomed. I'm not sure if I made any sense with this thread but I tried! |
http://www.veterinarypartner.com/Con...=11&A=1607&S=1 I would go with iso or sevo for anesthesia, I don't know if halothane is safe. Some vets don't run blood work and that may be okay. It comes down to how much of a chance do you want to take? Yorkies are overbred and therefore have lots of disease. Why not just run the blood work and be safe? I wouldn't go to a vet that won't run it... If I got another Yorkie I would also do a bile acid test before surgery. |

Preop blood work will just give them a glance at how the organs are functioning and if it is safe to use anesthesia. Blood work is usually optional for dogs under 6 or 7. |
A lot of clients don't want to pay for bloodwork so a lot of vets do surgeries without it. The vet in the town I grew up in doesn't require bloodwork. Only a few clients even have it done. However, a lot of vets require bloodwork before any anasthesia. It's an extra precaution and I recommend having it done just in case. Most like she will be perfectly find being put under, but there is always a risk that there is something wrong that you don't know about..and the bloodwork could have pointed it out. I'd rather be safe than sorry. |
I would also request a bile acid test. It is very important, I'm speaking from experience. "Better to be safe than sorry", like MyFairLacy said. |
I definitely agree with getting a blood test done. My yorkie poo boy Bentley was my first dog and I didn't have one done because no one even mentioned it to me, and when I started researching on my own I was so scared about what could have happened. I'm sure your baby will do great! My little girl just was spayed/teeth removed and is totally doing great, acting like nothing ever happened :) |
Thanks so much everyone for your help! What are the vouchers for getting your dog spayed? |
personally i would never have surg done on any of my dogs without doing blood tests and with yorkies i would totally get the bile acid test done to make sure it doesnt have liver problems. your vet witth do thing differently if he see a problem. |

I just went through this with my Lily and I was so worried I cried when I had to leave her with the vet. She is my first small dog and I was so worried, I chose to do the pre operation blood work, it put me at ease. She was spayed ,micro chipped and had 5 baby teeth pulled. she came through just fine, in fact it was so hard trying to keep her quiet when she came home because she felt so well. Good luck with your baby. |
