My neighbor is complaining!!!! HELP!!! Two months ago, I moved into an apartment with Riley. Riley is 8 months old and barks at everything. When I first moved here, he was really bad about barking when I left. He only would bark and cry when I left. Well hes gradually gotten better, but now I guess my neighbor wants to be mean and complain when Riley does bark or cry. He called the manager and said Riley had cried/barked for the past two days when I leave. I really don't understand why hes complaining now, seeing how Riley has gotten alot better about barking. Anyway, they said if he complains again I either have to get rid of Riley or move. So what will help his barking. I have to have ideas that really dont involve me being home because he doesnt bark when I'm home. :( |
What about doggie day care? Or a petsitter during the day? |

if you can't do a day care or babysitter... Layla's babysitter has a dog who had barking issues, however she barked at people, not because someone left.. either way.. she used a citronella collar, similar to a bark collar but it sprays citronella (the smell the deters mosquitos) which dogs hate.. the dog has made such improvment! you might think abotut hat.. but keep in mind he is barking because he is upset that you are leaving.. and if you take away barking from him he might take his anxiety out on your furniature or something else.. so i think if you can deal with his anxiety it will be better for the both of you. |
What is your routine before you leave? Maybe if you tell us what you do now we can think of suggestions to help him be less stressed:) |

oh i was thinking.. even if you can't bring him to day care every day.. even if you could for like two days a week... it would be such great stimulation and then completley poop him out for the next day :) |
either try this http://www.petsmart.com/product/inde...earch&keepsr=1 or, my sister also has this little remote thing that has a battery in it..when her dogs bark(she has 5 of them), this thing goes off and they all shut up real quick..I don't know what it's called, but, can find out from her if you want me too.. |
So he has the run of the apt. while you're gone? Does he have a crate or a small area where he can feel secure? Do you give him a special treat or toy that's only for when you leave? Do you leave any music or tv on? Mine stay in the kitchen in an x-pen and I keep a radio on a Classical station. When they see me getting my shoes and coat they run into their pen because they know they will get a special treat and certain toys. They are so busy with their treats that they barely hear me leave. When they were younger and cried a bit I would leave a little early and just stand outside at the door to see how long they carried on - I only had to come back in twice to hush them. |
That product with D.A.P is supposed to calm them. THere is a plug in version you can get too but it's about $30.00. It has some kind of phermones in it. Patricia McConnell (Dog expert, Zoologist, "Calling all Pets" radio show) swears by them. You also need to take him on a very long walk before you go for at least an hour to use up some of his energy. I know this is a tall order most days if you are anything like me getting ready for work, but it sounds like he has pent up energy and frustration. |

Is there anyway to set up a tape recorder, camcorder or web cam so you can see what is truely going on while you are way? If you can see or hear what the neighbor is talking about you might be able to find a solution. Plus, you might like to have proof of what is happening while you are gone... incase you need...to show that apt manager what is really going on. Could he is barking at another neighbor, that is passing by the apt at a certain time everyday? |

I Have Read That Their Hearing Is Much Better Than Ours As Well As Smell.they Can Hear You Comming And That Is Why You Hear No Barking He Know's You Are Comming Before You Hit The Outer Door. My Cousin Lives In A Condo And Her Neighbor Told Her The Same Thing.her Although She Didn't Report Her She Puts Him In Her Bedroom Now So No One Can Hear And She Is Working On The Method Of Teaching The Dog To Bark On Command That Way He Understands When You Tell Him To Quiet. |
You can try stuffing a Kong with the spray treat in it. I had trouble with stormy chewing the sheetrock while I was gone. It keeps her occupied for hours! |
Ive gotten written up twice from my condo complex bc neighbors complained about my boys. I started taking a firm stance in barking, I wont let them. I firmly say "HEY!" when they start, and they immediately stop. Also I put a radio on when I go to work. It helps to drown out outside noises and helps curb the barking! Good Luck :) I have no idea who complained about me, but I talked to the neighborhood busy body and told her how hard I was working with them to quit barking and made mention that I was written up. I figured whoever told on me would find out from her that I was working on it hard and give me a break and some time. Try the radio thing, it worked wonders for my boys! :) |

Have you tried talking to the neighbor? Maybe if you took your dog with you and went over and talk to him. Tell him you are really sorry about the barking and are doing everything you can to stop it. Let him get to know your baby. Maybe he wouldn't be such a jerk. Maybe he would even be willing to check on him for you when he does bark. |

I agree with the use of a waterbottle too, my concern in your case would be that this seems to be a time sensitive matter. Yorkies are so darn smart that I would worry that when he knows your not there to spray the water bottle he will bark anyway, then if your neighbor complains you have to make a decision. If you were to try to get something that can work when your not there to manipulate it you would probably be better off in the long run. jmho |
ONE complaint and they tell you one more then you have to move? thats crap. Come live in my apts, you can complain all you want and they dont do anything. Not that I have had any, i had a neighbor play his music loud til 2 am and he still did it....2 yrs later hes still here. |

Like I said, Maybe if you talk to the neighbor, it will help. A little sucking it up and honey never hurt anyone |
I agree with the Kong idea! It kept my Jack Russell quiet when I lived in a condo. I also got complaints regarding his barking. Between the Kong and leaving the tv/radio on, his barking stopped and we didn't get anymore complaints! Good luck! |
