I'm sold! I bought the washable training pads and OMG why did I not switch forever ago? I mean I used cloth diapers for my children... what's the dif really. My husband is not going for me putting a bunch of dog pee soaked linens in the washing machine but he will get over it. I'll just make sure to run an empty load with bleach in it afterwards to shut him up. :) I didn't think they were going to work well at first, the girls flipped it over and sat on the waterproof side looking at me like they had concured their newest toy. I decided to cram it into the pee pad tray that I use for the disposable ones and the rest is history. I'm stoked! If you have been thinking about making the switch do it, it's totally worth it. I ended up getting a dozen of them fairly cheap from a site I had found in a thread here. I knew I wanted a bunch so that I didn't have to wash them daily. |
I just got a couple more and Dixie likes going on them. I have pee pads on them for now as CAli goes on the disposable ones but I think I may switch in time. Disposables are too expensive. |
It's amazing how much better they are, isn't it? :D I could never ever see myself washing pee pads, but old Lady has neuropathy in her hind legs so she doesn't lift them up that high anymore. She'd try to circle on the disposables and they got tangled in her legs. When she started going right next to the pad I broke down and bought Pooch Pads. I had the same reaction as you did ....what took me so long! I got over the "yuk" factor pretty fast. I presoak/wash them in 20 Mule Team Borax, then use bleach in the wash so the odor gets neutralized in the process. I have a really sensitive nose to odors and I can't smell anything after I've washed them so I'm sure no residue stays in the washer. Wait until you see how much money you save, too! |
Weird question... what do you the "used" ones before you wash them? |
Ive been thinking about them..where did you get them from? |
I bought them from http://www.personallypaws.com/catalog/index.php I will be putting them in my old diaper pal that I used for my boys diapers, same dif :) It's really just a kitchen garbage can LOL |

Here is a link to her last sale thread... not sure what she has left or if they are on sale or not but give her a shout.... we LOVE LOVE LOVE them. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=107168 |
We love the washable ones too:D I got them at valethics.com They so much cheaper there, and they're the same thing. They have brand new, then they have reclaimed bed pads. All different sizes, and levels of quality as well. They are sanitized and perfectly fine, I got new small ones and then bigger used ones(the highest quality) and if I hadn't known which were which, I couldn't tell the difference. I do a prewash, then a regular wash with bleach, and then a triple rinse with vinegar. I recommend using unscented detergent, as they then smell different from other laundry (rugs, towels, and linens). There have been a huge decrease in potty accidents on rugs:thumbup: |

As for what I do with the soiled ones..... I fold them into fourths soiled side in and just place them on the floor of the laundry room. They don't smell as long as they're folded (and we're pretty sensitive to odors). But you could put them in a hamper or bag if you wanted. |

Oh yes, we love the washable pads!! I have some from valethics.com and some from Little Bit. I wash mine in Tide w/ Bleach Alternative and put some vinegar in a Downy Ball for the rinse cycle - there is no odor that I can detect:) |
tip about washable pads If any of you live by a nursing home/hospital, if you go to the laundry department, you can ask them for the "rag out" pads. I am in charge in part, of the laundry at our hospital, when pads start breaking down, they have to rag them out so it wont irritate the patients skin. We used to donate them to the animal shelter along with old blankets and such until they just didnt need them anymore. So we trashed them, then one day I went to a yorkie specialty show and we were all talking about pads, What Im I stupid or what? Anyway, I take the ragged out pads now for my own use and supply just about all my friends with yorkies. Just a thought. May save you all some money. L. |

I usually change them daily. How many you get depends on how often you want to do wash and how big your washer is. When washing them you want your washer to be no more than about 85% full. That way there is plenty of room for them to move around and get clean. I have never had an lingering odors in my machine or anything like that. Another thing I do when I put them in the washer is I put them so the soiled side is facing out rather than the waterproof side. That way I figure the water goes out from the pad in the spin cycle rather than stopping at the waterproof barrier. I am not sure if it makes a difference, but that's how I do it. |
We have 2 of Nancy's pads at the moment..Will be getting more...I change my pads out daily...And will fold it into 4 quarter( dirty side in) and keep in the laundry room....It does not smell at all....I wash the pads every other night after the boys are in bed for the night...And will hang them up and they are dry by the next morning...They are great..... I change after every use too. I just don't want pee sitting around at all but I think in all I have to wash about 6 pads by the end of the day. I use bleach as well and I still have the original pee pads I bought in March. |

If you are worried about putting the poo in the washer, you could invest in a diaper sprayer used for cloth diapers. It attaches to the back of the toilet so you can use it to wash the poopies down the toilet. If you are interested PM me and I will give you a couple of web sites to buy one from. |
Try these! I did a lot of research and went back and forth on switching for about a month. We finally made the switch; hubby and I couldn't be more pleased. The disposable pads get soooo expensive (especially for 2 Yorkies). And I also don't like the idea of throwing so much away. I found these pads online and LOVE them!!! PUP Washable Training Underpads I wanted something that hid urine, wouldn't leak, provided more than just a cover, etc. Because they do not leak and absorb the urine so well (without spreading into large puddles), the girls can use a single pad for up to 3 days! We remove the solid waste, of course. When I pick up the pad to wash, there are no stains on the back side, nothing has leaked through, yet the girls' feet do not smell of urine either from walking on the pad.  |

I've also read that Apple Cider Vinegar in the wash is great for removing urine smell. |
I have used wahsable pads for almost a year now. Like WOW! What a savings in pee pads. I use the reclaimed ones from http:www.valethics.com -- they are not very pretty but they are very serviceable and have a terrific rubber leak proof backing. I generally buy the S27 type 32 x 27" but they are out of stock. There are several members who make washable potty pads that are very attractive and will fit in with your decor :) |
:) I bought a dozen at Valethics. I bought material at walmart and covered the pads myself by zigzagging the material to the pad around the edges. I now have many different colors to hide the pee stain. They wash up so nice and will not go back to disposable unless we are travelling. |
I thought about it, but, that's as far as I got..Hubby said YOU'RE NOT putting pee pads in the washer, so, I will stick with my drsfostersmith pads..I love those, and even with 4 of them using them, I only change them out twice a day.. |
