Garage Door Sensor Install To High Killed My Yorkie Hello, I'm writing this to alert other pet owners. My twelve year old, five-pound Yorkshire Terrier was crushed/killed by our electric garage door. My Yorkie tried to exit the garage and was not detected by the two side sensor beams that were mounted too high and the reverse sensor was set with too high so it just continued to close until the door was completely shut. This killed my baby. I hired a licensed Contractor to install a new garage door and the contractor sent a worker to our home that didn't install the garage door according the State law. There is a State law regarding garage doors because too many children have been killed or injured by garage doors. The two sensors (positioned on each side of the door frame) should of been installed at five inches in height from the floor and the reversed sensor for the garage door was set to high so the sensor never reversed when it came in contact with my Yorkie. I contacted the licensed contractor who came and fixed the improperly installed garage door but he took no responsibility for my Yorkie’s death. If you have a small animal, please make sure the two sensors detect your Yorkie and the reverse sensor on the garage is set to reverse as soon as it touches an object (like your hand). My family is totally heart broken over the loss of our child (we called him our baby). I hope to prevent this type of tragedy from happening to anyone else. |

Oh my goodness! what a tragic tragic accident! I feel so sorry for you! :( Thankyou for being brave and coming on here to alert others of this danger, I know you must be hurting so much right now. I hope you stick around...most of us here have lost babies in the past and we are here for you when you need to \'talk\'. Hugs...kez. |
That\'s horrible and I am so sorry for your loss. Thank you so much for posting this information. I\'m sure it\'ll be helpful to anyone with electric garage doors. |
I\'m so so sorry for your loss but thank you for posting your tragic story on here, hopefully you will save some other yorkies in doing so. I know I will be more cognizant of our garage door--we don\'t have sensors at all which is not good! |
Oh my!! I am so sorry to hear this as we have the same kind of Garage doors........I don\'t know how high the sensors are but I will check it.....Thanks for alerting everyone! |
My heart goes out to you and your family. I know my sensors are low but I\'m going to check on the sensitivity! Thank you sooo much for alerting us. |
OMG..Iam so very sorry for your tragic accident. my prayers are with you. |
I\'m so sorry for your loss, I\'m going out to my garage right now to check the height of my sensor. I hope you find comfort in knowing that you\'re probably saving another furbaby\'s life. God Bless Your :littleang Kathy, Maggie:aimeeyork & Bailey:aimeeyork |
I am so sorry. Thanks for the warning. |
I am so sorry. Thanks for posting this. |
I am so sorry for your loss. I am just sick thinking about this. My boyfriend is a garage door installer. I made him read your post and promise to always think about this when he is hurrying through a job. I pray that this does not happen to anyone else. Thank you for posting this and hopefully you have saved the lives of others in doing so. |
I just grabbed a tape measure and my pup to go check. The sensor is *exactly* 5" off the floor, and the pup is taller than that and cuts the beam. I would never have thought of that. I\'m terribly sorry for your tragic loss - it must have been horrible. However, hopefully your loss is not in vain, and that others will check their sensors to ensure it doesn\'t happen to another little dog. Thank you for your post: now I know that my little boy is safe from the same fate, one I never would have considered. |
OMG, how terrible! I am so sorry this happened to your baby. My heart goes out to you and your family.:tinyheart |
What a horrible tragedy. I am so sorry for your loss. Please don\'t accept the contractor\'s story that he is not responsible. As you say, a child could have just as easily been killed and then you\'d better believe he\'d be in trouble. The loss of one of our pets is like losing a child. Contractors are required to be licensed by the state. File a complaint with the licensing agency and they will investigate what happened. It won\'t bring your furbaby back, but this contractor should be held responsible for his negligence. |
I am so sorry for your loss...OMG:( |
