1st Yorkie Ever!!!!! Well here goes my 1st thread. I am new to YT. I am actually new to Yorkie's. I have an OED and love him very much. For Christmas my family got a new edition, his name is Mascot. Mascot is 3 months tomorrow. He is very sweet, very luvable, and hates to be alone.... if left alone he is a yapper. Something we haven't experienced with our big dog. Regardless, we are working on the yapping and trying to help the lil man be more secure and not afraid to be left alone. I guess if I have any questions it would be the size difference in the boys.... I am a little worried about them playing together. Differnece of 70lbs and 3 lbs... should I be over protective of the yorkie.... anybody out there have bigger dogs? |
Welcome to YorkiTalk and congratulations on your first Yorkie. It is common for babies to yap when they are penned up, left alone of just playing. I would never leave him unsupervised with your big dog. I know some people that have big dogs and little dogs together but it can be risky. I know one of my 3 year old, 3 1/2 lb babies that I sold several years ago got his back broke by a lab that was just playing with him, so it can happen. For that matter they can jump off something high and get hurt or killed. I think the best thing is to set up an exercise pen with is bed, food, plenty of toys and potty pads. If you have to leave or if he is tired just put him in his pen and he will learn that the pen is his safe haven. After he is older and potty trained then he can have the run of the house. Does your big dog stay in the house? Best of luck. |
:welcome4: to YT:exclaim: :goodluck: with your new little guy, Mascot:exclaim: :yorkietal |
Welcome to YT and hello Mascot. Hope to see pictures of him soon. I personally don't have experience with big dogs but recently read a thread here on YTwhere her baby was nipped by her bigger dog and died. I think for now it is best to make sure they are well supervised like a hawk . . .a split second of not looking could result to drastic events :( . . so please be very careful. What is OED  |
Congrats on your yorkie and welcome to YT, i am shure you will get lots of advise ! Myself i only have my 2 yorkies, but i would be careful about leaving them unsupervised. My 2 play with my daughters 1/2 lab 1/2 boardercollie and she is very careful with them, Apollo litterly puts his head in her mouth, i dont know what he finds so fasinating in there:rolleyes: and lots of times if i want to go somewhere my daughter tells me, oh just put them in with snickers , allthough i know how gentle she is there is no way i would do this. Reading too much about accidents happen ! |
Welcome to YT :cheer: Cant wait to see pics of your new furbaby! Its so exciting when you first get one :) He's still a baby, so being left alone is a learning process for him. Try leaving the TV on if your gone, also lots of toys (interactive)...they even have a teddy bear that has a heartbeat, to help out with that. I would definately not be leaving your baby with the bigger dog unsupervised and it'd probably be a long while before I did. I sure hope this helps and Im by far not an expert, but feel free to PM with questions, concerns or just to brag about your furbaby a lil :D |
welcome to YT .congrats on your new furbaby .cant wait to see pics. |
Welcome to YT!!! you will learn alot here... I was worried also when i got my yorkie i have 2 boxers and a friend of mine that i am always at her house has a boxer and great dane... Mi was scared at first but i noticed as long as she had a place to hide under that the bigger dogs can't get to then she was fine and will play wit them... its funny watchin her with her snaek attacks from under the sofa haha but i always make sure i can see her just to make sure... but when im not home there all in there own area of my house... Can't wait to get my little boy so Mi don't have to be in her pen alone.. I can't wait to see pics of yur baby!! |
Welcome to Yorkietalk! You've already gotten tons of advice about the size difference...so I'd like to ask a question (and show my ignorance). What's an OED? Can't figure that one out.:) Anyway, lots of members here seem to have both big dogs and yorkies. I wish you the best of luck! Can't wait to see pics. |
No advice, just a very big welcome to you and your fur-kid. Hope to meet him soon. :p |
My big dog does live in the house. he is a gentle giant, but sometimes is unaware of his own size. For instance he tries to still sit in my hubbys lap. That is very scary that a pup got his back broke like that, thanks for letting me know, I wil definetely keep a close eye on Mascot. My husband is originally from Texas, I am from Oklahoma. We are military. Hope you didn't get to much of the ice storm. Thanks again. |
Thanks for the post!!!! |

Welcome to YT!!! It is nice to meet you..... and Congrats on your new lil guy!!! I would definitely keep an eye on him when near your OED. Even though the larger dog is a gentle giant, he may not realize that his play could very seriously injure the little Yorkie!! You will LOVE this website...... lots of really good info! Again....:welcome4: |
Hi there, and Thanks..... I see you are in Charlote NC. I currently reside in NC. We are a military family. We have been here 2 yrs this time, but have been here 2 other times totaling about 8 yrs all together.... how do you like this cold weather? We came from Colorado, so my kids say this isn't cold.... I say it is freezing. The wind was the real kicker. Take care and Happy New Years!! |
