Another new Yorkie owner Hi everyone, I'm new here. I just got a 15 wk yorkie named Lola yesterday. She's doing great with housebreaking and with her crate but the biting is out of control when she is in her really rambunctious phase. My 13 yr old daughter freaks out a bit over it which of course makes it worse. I'm doing all the things that are recommended, I just would love some words of encouragement that things will get better. I love that you guys are here. (I had a yorkie many years ago but it's been awhile and feel like a first time mom);) |
LOL, I'm sure you'll get wonderful advice here...but since you asked for encouragement...Hang in there! Puppies bite until they learn otherwise...keep doing what you're doing (providing chew toys, playtime, etc.). This too will pass.:) Congrats on your furball! |
Welcome to YT! When Lacy was a puppy, if she started chewing on me, I stuck a toy in her mouth. I always gave her stuff to chew on too. She was a very hyper puppy but started to calm down around 7 months. She's pretty layed back most of the time now, but she'll get the zoomies and run around and play hard too. |
Welcome to You and Lola! Furgie and I hope you enjoy you time here. |
Try putting "bitter apple" on your hands. When she chews on them, she'll taste it and hopefully back off with the biting. Try distracting her with a chew toy. Buy her lots and lots of teething toys. Parker still nips here and there. But my one hero is Bully Sticks, he used to bite and chew at everything but now he much rather have a bully stick instead. I would just keep redirecting the behavior and not let him bit you or your daughter. Good luck and congrats on the new baby!! |
I have 1 who was a biter..when I would come home, she would be so excited as soon as I put my hands down to pet or pick her up, she'd get to nibbling....what I did was I would still get her just as excited when I walked in, go to put my hands down and as soon as I saw her trying to bite/nip my hands, I immediately put them behind my back and said "no" looking her in the eye, then bring the hands back around trying to pet or pick her up again....I would do that a few times..after about a week (or 2  ) of that, she finally got the picture. Another thing I would do is instead of putting my hands down to greet her, I would kneel down and bring my face close to hers(hands out of reach/sight).....and now, she licks instead of bites..:D So it just takes patience and consistency and she'll get the hang of it. As you said, they are very excited & playful at that age... Good Luck...look forward to hearing about and seeing Lola! |
Wanted to welcome you & Lola to YT. You've gotten lots of great advice. All I would add is that consistency is important - just like when raising a skin kid - that way they know what you expect & don't get confused by different rules. You will be a great yorkie mom!! |
Things will get better....puppies will be puppies and 13 yr olds will be 13 yr olds and get over excited easily.:p Welcome to YT. Hang in there, be patient and consistant and stick and you will all make it through the hectic stage. :D |
Welcome!!! You will love YT!!!! :) |
welcome to YT!! |
Welcome to YT!! |
welcome to yt:) |
I'm on the same boat so let's try to stay positive and consistent together. Duke is 11 weeks old and leaves marks when he bites me too. I've gotten really frustrated at times but found the advice on YT helps since we all just need a bit encouragement sometimes. |
Welcome to YT!! |
It'll get better! Welcome to YT! Hang in there..the biting will get better. A.J was and still is a biter but as he gets older, it's getting much better. My best advice is to pick a punishment or reaction to the bite and do it every time. Good luck! |
Welcome to YT. You'll love it here. Once you find this site, you don't want to leave. LOL !! Everyone has given you great advise. The chew toys, etc, but it will get better. It seems like it's about the 7-8 month mark that they start to get alot better. I have 2 Yorkies and a Yorkie/Poo. The yorkie/poo is the youngest (named Romeo) He is 8 months now. He is alot better. He just has soooo much energy when he gets with the others. Anyways, Welcome to YT. Darlene :animal-pa :animal-pa :animal-pa |
Its definitely true it will get better! My Oliver always was nipping my hand -- even if I tried to stick a toy in his mouth, he seemed to zero in on my fingers :) When he got really worked up, I used to just calmly end play time too -- get up, put him in his crate or just walk away until he calmed down. He is 7 months old right now and has totally outgrown it. |
welcome to YT!!! i was anxious to read the replies on this thread too because my youngest is somewhat of a biter / nibbler too :) ... those puppy teeth are like little razor blades lol :D i think all the replies are super and hopefully will help! |
I have a 12 weeker that is doing that. Guinness is always nibbling. I do the toy thing, got him plenty of things to chew on but he seems to like the squishy fingers and toes. I use a stern voice and use NO or make a sound to get his attention. It takes awhile but he calms down. |
Reagan was biting really bad & leaving marks at first & I tried saying ouch kinda loud & then I would put her in her x-pen, neither one fazed her so I was searching on YT & came across a thread & she advised to take them a little by their neck (like their mother would do, not harsh) & say no bite it has really been effective w/her & now she may be acting like she's going to bite but she'll just nudge instead so my hands say thank you to everyone w/wonderful advice :):) |
welcome to YT! |

Me too... I am new also, still figuring out all this lil doggie business..... but they are so darn sweet. Good luck. |
Hey mascot, that's my babies b-day too!! |
Thank you guys! Thank you guys! I was feeling really overwhelmed because Lola was really getting better yesterday because I kept her mellow but today my husband and daughter were with her while I was at work and she was nuts when I got home. It gives me hope to hear your stories. I did have a yorkie years ago that lived to be 14 but I just didn't remember the puppy phase at all. |
