Dog is itching...what to do
 
Hi everyone ok my Yorkie is 18 weeks old I got Chewy when he was 12 weeks he was eating Chicken Soup and itching I switched him to puppy royal canine which he loves but he's still itching he is on advantage for fleas so I know he's clear of that, any good foods out there? Other than that he's wonderful we are first time Yorkie parents and we love it, he sits, comes when called, but hates his clothes. Could someone also give me an estimate of his weight? He is 18 weeks and weighs 3.5 by one scale and 3.0 at pet smart all the scales are so different. Have a great New Year to all the YT lovers out there.

Hi! i've heard that alot of yorkies get itchy on the royal canin food. Most are allergic to corn and wheat. i'd stay away from foods with those two ingredients in it.

Canidae is a good food without these. I also like Wellness and solid gold.

Eggs could also be a problem. I have a white pommie (besides my 3 Yorkies) that has food allergies. Took wheat, eggs, and corn out of his diet and it has helped a great deal. I'm also very careful with the treats I give him. Good luck.

I would also say solid gold, canidaie or innova. rc has corn gluten meal in it and the chicken soup I was reading about has some nasty preservatives in it, and they said that they use it so that would be a out for me. Chester eats solid gold, I love it

Good luck on your food search. Same thing happened when I brought my baby home (and he had dandruff to boot). He was oh so very picky - had a hard time finding the right food. When I finally found a local store for the above mentioned suggested brands - they were so nice they gave me several free samples. I haven't really tried them ALL due to wanting to try different brands slowly due to possible tummy issues. Like a prior poster said - do a search for a brand that doesn't have corn or corn meal as the 1st product. I also gave him fish oil supplement for awhile (am out of it and none locally but am going to get more). Has been several months now and no dandruff or excessive itching. It could be allergies- but Barney is addicted to using pet spa products- www.happytails.com (or like high end pet boutiques). He is itchy a lot- I use: Fur Butter to keep him soft and Comfy Dog (oatmeal shampoo for itchers) and often Flea the Scene (just in case- fleas are around):))

Moose was scratching all the time, he didn't have fleas. His skin looked a little dry in some spots. The owner of a locally owned pet store/boutique dog/bakery suggested "dream coat" (see attachment). I have been giving this to Moose everyday now for about 3-4 months. My vet said it might take up to 3 months before I notice difference. I noticed a difference in about 6 wks. Love It!! What a difference in is skin. :thumbup:

My 3 month old yorkie is also itching like mad i have searched for fleas but havnt found one, i have never used any flea treatmentsas the breeder said she had been de-flead but dont know whether she is allergic to eggs because she has scrambled egg one/two times a week...does anyone know of a good flea shampoo..........

It is probably the Royal Canin. That foods make so many dogs itch (including mine). When you change foods make sure you give the new one atleast 60 to stop the itching while the old is leaving the system.

Hello, I hope I am doing this correctly, I'm new to this web site, and really new to computers, and if you answer me, I pray I know how to view it . Anyway, the itching problem your Baby is having could be from allergies . Mine had the same problem, I took her to the vet, and he put her on the regular human BABY BENEDRIL liquid cherry syrup, and she has been just fine ever since . I have the best vet in the whole entire world, he is even willing to come to my home if I have a problem and no way to get to his office . There are not many of those kind around these days . He views every dog, cat, or whatever you have as one of his own BABIES he is so kind and caring to all animals . I hope this has helped you somewhat, and your BABY will stop the itching, you know that must be a real worry to the Yorkie, just think if it were you, and nobody would try to help you . Just another thought, I always feed my Baby chicken breast, carrots, broccoli, green beans, rice, cottage cheese, and all of these things I buy at the natural food store, is she spoiled or what . I love her so much . For a treat she gets a tiny taste of banana, all these things were o.k.'d by my vet before I began to feed her anything other than the food the vet had at his office . LOL. A lot of us homecook for our Yorkies.:)

What food were you originally feeding when your dog developed an allergy?

and the reaction nearly drove him crazy. It got so bad that he tried to hide under the sofa cushions to get away from it. I finally had to give him some beneydral(spelling?)Now I keep it on hand just in case we have another boo boo.
