There are so many things that can cause excessive scratching. Vaccinations can effect the immune system and cause skin problems. One of the 'side effects' of the flea treatment (Advantage) is excessive scratching. I know this for a fact because I have one Yorkie that will not be scratching much from the fleas but as soon as I put the Advantage on him and the fleas are gone, he goes crazy for several days with excessive scratching. I would recommend getting you baby on a good quality food (corn free) and add some omega-3 fatty acids to his diet. |

Flea products are very toxic and cause skin problems... I don't use them.. I feed Royal Canin to my dogs and have only one dog that gets skin problems ... She gets itchy and I feel it's a allergy or mite. But she only gets it in the fall... I wash her with Head and shoulders mixed with Sulfadaine..a few drops... She quits itching.. In between baths I sprizts her with sulfadaine too... She's fine now.. But since it's only one of the 14 that I have with it I don't think it's the food... With the line breeding of these dogs, the trait of sensitivity to many things is magified greatly in off spring. |

Luvmypet. I haven't read through any of the posts so I appologize if this is repetative. Both my Jersey and Bella get itchy. It has nothing to do with food (Atleast for them). I had them both to the vet and they suffer from allergies. Environmenta meaing airbourne just as we do from Pollen etc. Both Jersey and Bella have the same daddy so this is hereditory. For Bella it occures in Augst, September and October and she gets a shot of predisone each month for those three months and is fine. Jersey is another story. She gets itchy but not necessarily during that time. It's sporatic. We are also now having an issue with couphing. After, a $300 vet bill yesterday to make sure that it was not a collapsing trachea, she is now on an antibiotic to be sure it's not an infection of some sort but his best guess is that it's her allergies kicking up. Another way to know if you dog has allergies is the ears. Not always but most of the time you dog will have a lot of wax, black wax in their ears. You almost want to think they may have ear mites, but it's not. The allergies produce a lot of wax build up. I hope this helps you. Elaine |
