Yorkie killed in attack

(Parts of this may make some people mad) I feel sorry for all parties involved. I can't imagine seeing one of my babies killed like that & I understand the people who think the owners of the Grey Hounds should pay the consequences but...the people to blame are the breeders & trainers who brought these dogs into the world to chase a small animal shaped target for a reward so they could make money. From the minute racing dogs are born they start training to chase...catch...get a prize. They saw the "target" & thought if I catch this & take it to mom she will hug me & give me treats, how many treats would our babies get if they brought us a dead rat? It is just like pits, rotties, german shepards, etc - people breed dogs to do something and when they mess up & get the "wrong" target people want them destroyed. Think about this - some teenagers came into my backyard and killed my Staffordshire Bull Terrier should I ask the police if I can have the teenagers put down?

i feel bad for both dog owners, the grey hound owners aparently love animals also and they killed anothers pet. i'm sure that they would do what is right without litigation. how many people have never had a pet get loose from them without their knowing? it happens and was an accident from the sound of it. i own 3 english mastiffs,2 yorkies,a terrier/pointer mix. they are fed raw mainly so the taste of blood does not make an animal crazy just hungry.

My first Yorkie, Teddy, killed at 14. It was awful. The greyhounds were being walked by owner on leads. All she could say was "your dog was loose." No sorry. Nothing. It was my fault. She could have walked across the street. Yes, Teddy was not contained. But he was partially blind, had very few teeth and weighed in at 8 pounds. My fault. My fault. Myfault. I am still so sorry I let you down Teddy. You did not deserve that. Right in front of your home where you lived without incident for 14 years.

Well, I would say yes...but unfortunately the animal cruelty laws aren't harsh enough I think those teenagers that killed your dog should be SEVERELY punished..much much more so than the law allows

I completely agree with you here. I think that they are mentally unstable if they can cold hardly kill an innocent animal in your own backyard and they didn't even live with you.

That is just awful!! Our Yorkie is my first small dog and I do worry that when walking him some other dog is going to come along and attack. Although it will never replace the lost pet I hope the greyhound owners are found liable and have some consequences

I feel for all parties here as well, but like it or not the owners of the loose dogs have to accept responsibility for the actions of their dogs. They took the dogs in knowing the history. Having owned big dogs most of my life I always understood I would be responsible for them if they broke out (I had one that could jump a 4 ft fence). It doesn't matter if its someones personal property, chicken, another dog or a human. I would be responsible for the actions of my dogs.

I do find it hard to believe that they could have 4 of them and not notice that they were missing (unless it was in the country and they had a lot of land). Like Kids, you get more than 1 together and you have some noise going on. All mothers know that usually when the kids are quiet, its time to see what's going on.

My heart goes out to the little Yorkies family.

You should be prepared because eventually you will be encountered by another stray dog. Carry a stick, mase/pepper spray, or an air horn.

I take an air horn even when im walking my pit bull, not to protect my dog(he is more than capable of that) but to protect the other dog. I dont want someone trying to press charges on me because my leashed dog bit their stray that came at us. I also carry a break stick just in case something were to happen. I have copies of his registration, all shots and his tags are always on his collar. With him being a pit bull and something were to happen he would be taken away wether it was our fault or not, so i take every precaution. Not that My pup is mean at all, he is the most loving in the world, but the world doesnt see that so we protect ourselves every way possible, thats what being a responsible owner is all about.

In my case, I had let Teddy out the back door. My husband was right there in the garage - door open. We became complacent. Felt safe. Ted had walked down his driveway thru theopen gate and met up with the greyhounds that were being walked. My husband heard someone screaming no no no. And saw the greyhound shaking our Ted. He ran and pried open the dog's mouth to get Ted out. The strangest thing is to be told, Well your dog was loose, at a time like this. No one was pointing a finger. We were grabbing keys to rush to the vet. She was cold. Never even said sorry for your loss. She was new in the neighborhood. Ted had roamed around before without a problem. I was in total shock. The greyhounds were not loose. My yorkie was killed on his driveway by the dogs on leashes.

My heart breaks for your story and your apology to Teddy. Your story reminds us that (the cold neighbor aside) animals are still animals and mistakes, accidents, complacency, and negligence do occur.

IMO, as sad as these stories are to hear, it is at least either natural to the breeds or natural to the dogs' or their ancestors' training (even when negligence is involved). I had a dog killed by a pack of wild dogs when I was a child (back in the day when you actually tied your dog outside - so he had no defense - wouldn't happen today). I would much rather lose a dog to another animal where no matter how we try to take on or place the blame, there is still some natural instinct of some sort involved - than to lose a dog to a human who is capable of rational thought, societal rules, and knowing right from wrong. Those are the scenarios from which I would never be able to recover.

I am sooo sorry to hear all those stories, it brings tears in my eyes. Even if the dog is on the leash and you cannot be in control chances are those horrific stories happen. I live in a big development and there are some people who have big dogs and once someone told me this tiny lady let her pitbull wonder around without a leash! What was she thinking??? Not being considerate to other people who have smaller dogs? I just want to punch those people, they dont feel any responsability! I saw that lady once but pitbull was on the leash but it looked like the dog was walking her. My poor little Maxi I got him on my hands to pass by and just looked at the dog and he looked like he was about to strike that pose and everything. I told the lady that I heard her dog was off the leash one time and said please put the leash on your dog its the law! Otherwise I will make a complaint to 311 and they will hit you with a fine. Have some consideration to other dog owners. Why is it that alot of people who have big dogs are the onces that cannot control them? If the dog walks you, you know you have a problem. Also my brother has a pitbull and that dog is the sweetest pitbull I ever met. My brother says that his dog always plays with the neighbor yorkie they are the best pals. I dont know about that I just dont trust big dogs for a lot of reason even they may get hurt just by playing! My Maxi never met his cousin Rex the pitbull because I think they should be a distant cousins

We have a Yorkie and 2 pit bulls and have never had a problem. The yorkie actually runs the house lol. Pit bulls are one of those breed where experience and love for the breed are needed. The are easy to train but they learn differently and not many people know that. They learn only on positive reinforcement, any negative training and they either ignore you or rebel. With all positive training you can train a pit bull in a matter of hours, they are suprisingly very smart. They are gentle with babies and kids and most of the time will never bite a human as thats a major fault in the breeds standard and always has been. I think anyone that ownes or wants to own a pit bull should have to take a class or some sort of training that is hard to pass. They take lots of time and exercise just to keep them sane. It takes a very responsible owner to contain a pit bull, they must always be on a leash, in the house, or crated. They cannot be left alone in the yard, they are very capable of climbing over 7ft. fences. Sorry, i hate when people are irresponsibe and their pets have pat for it.

Yeah I learned that pitbulls can be very sweet, when my brother got one. He is such a sweetie that I cannot wait to come there and visit them Thats why it breaks my heart to see that lady who is my neighbor not able to control her pitbull it just seems like he is not trained becaue he looks aggressive. My brother says his pitbull is a sissy lol on which I always say dont change his character he is the sweetest pitbull I have ever met.
When it comes to Maxi meeting Rex I dont know because Rex is pretty muscular when they would play he might hurt Maxi by accident with his paw or something. One of my neighbors has a dog her name is Eva she is a big dog and loves to play with Maxi. Both of them have to be on the leash cause when she jumps few times I had to pull Maxi away because one of her paws almost landed on his face. I am one of those crazy moms that always worry

Unbelievable, some people dont deserve to have pets. Poor Yorkie. This is such a sad story. I would sue. I would have also jumped in to save my dog's life. Frankie
