Am I wrong to be nervous???? Couple of situations I have run into on here where there is a puppy available and they want XYZ money in deposit. You live out of state from me, you are someone on the internet, and the puppy may not even exist, that picture could have come from anywhere... am I being overly cautious/suspicious.... another thing....how do you know that the gorgeous puppy in the picture is the one you are going to pick up??? It could switcheroooo Yep, I'm trying again...problem is most of these breeders are hell and gone from Memphis...it's either a long long drive or a flight. or more shipping charges (and I really have problems with that idea anyway) on top of an already large price tag (ever told just the average person what you paid for your yorkie and looked at their expression....YOU PAID WHAT FOR A DOG..)does anyone in Tennessee raise yorkies???? Chatanooga doesn't count...driving from Memphis to Chatanooga is like driving to Russia. Maybe I'm just too suspicious for the out of town breeder process. |
I had found two breeders here in Memphis from the AKC website....one of them the little girl died after I asked for her, the other one told me to call her back, and when I did it was "dang I took a deposit on that little girl you were asking about just yesterday). Then that same lady called me back and said she had given her other girl to a relative in Mississippi but could go get her back and sell her to me. I asked her for a picture, and just when I thought there was no such thing as an ugly yorkie, she came up with one. No thanks... You know I'm a single lady, and I'm begnning to feel that finding the right breeder and the right yorkie in the right location for the right price at the right time is harder than finding a man. SO those are my sad stories......for today anyway... I could not sleep well last night thinking about the other baby I was offered in a crate all evening as Mika was happily playing and going out to potty on cue and having an otherwise great evening. That is what Sassy should be experiencing too. |
Gosh no! you are doing the right thing. I agree  if you can't go pick him up yourself do not trust. is my theroy. I know there are some breeders that are good and honest. But it is hard to tell. I wish I could help you out. Know one around here with Yorkies ..we have Pugs all over though. Good luck and always be careful about the money down thing.(unless you know for sure) I was scamed that way once.. Merry Christmas |

Even if they have a website, cause those are easy to make too for those with the expertise. |
I don't blame you for being nervous. It is buyer beware when buying a puppy blindly from an internet ad. Fortunately, there are breeders in Tennessee that are recommended by the Yorkshire Terrier Club. Here is the list: http://www.ytca.org/breeder4.html#TN |
Lord love ya Thank you so much |
I think you have every right to be cautious. Are there any breeders on YT that are close to you? |

No it seems that west Tennessee is not sophisticated enough for yorkies, all of the recommended ones are 4.5 to 6 hours away from me. NOT A ONE near Memphis. |
  I think your right to be on caustion with the rise in scammers these days who could blame you:eek: , I am in Ny and dont know of any breeders, but there are really good breeder on YT, I am sure they will have no problem putting you in touch with a breeder in your area. Good luck and Happy Holidays to you and your family:p |
You are right to be cautious! Do not give up though. The right Yorkie and breeder are out there we just need to help you find them. |
Maybe taking the 4.5 or 6 hours away isnt such a bad idea, being that you would be getting a beautiful yorkie from a great breeder here on YT. Believe me I understand how you feel, when we were looking for a puppy for my sister we had a very hard time, and we ended up going pretty far but it was so worth it. good luck on your search:) |

I love the picture of Max where it flashes Merry christmas... that is too precious |
There are also foolproof pictures of the puppy such as asking for a picture to be taking in front of a mirror, today's newspaper etc... Anyone can explain to the breeder their uneasiness of buying online and they should understand. Before the deposit, I'd see if a breeder could give weekly pictures to wath growth. It's good to beware. Many people have been victims of scams. I believe it's so much better if you can see them in person, if possible. Goodluck in finding your puppy. |
I was a victim of a scam a few years ago.. I told the guy that was trying to scam me that I knew it was a scam and he kept telling me it wasn't, I just told him that I wanted my money back $250 I lost to the scam I was able to get $100 dollars back from the scammer as he wasn't able to pick it up. But lost the $250, as his partner in crime took that one, and took off, and left his partner. I learned my lesson. So you are doing the right thing.. No one can be trusted unless you are able to see and hear the puppy. I hope you are able to get your baby.. I drove 3 hrs one way to get my Mischa, and 3 hrs back. It's worth the drive to see the little ones with your own eyes. |

I believe it's always best to aire on the side of caution, especially when you are looking for a new family member that will be with you for the next 15 or more years. Would you buy a diamond sight unseen?? |
PM'ed you! |
Just wanted to say I am getting a lot of help in PM and everyone seems willing to help me find the best little girl possible. Thank you all. |

I got lucky with Zoey. I bought her on site with no education into the breed. My second was bought from a breeder recommended by a YT member. Im sure you will find help here. |
Do you have relatives or friends in other areas of the country? If you have someone that is close to one of the YT recommended breeders you could have them check the situation out first for you. See what they think of the place. If it looks good you could make it a 2 for 1 trip, go see them for a visit and get you a little girl at the same time. |
This begs to ask the question if there is a list somewhere of YT recommended breeders????????? |
you are doing the right thing , My sister almost fell victim to a scammer, Iam so glad she had me there to help her, or she would of been out 350.00 and no pup, As you said some people have these beautiful babies for sale, and who knows if they are even the same dog, I wish you the very best in getting your new babie:) Yt will help you;) |
You're right to be cautious! So many have been scammed, but if you're smart and do your homework, it WILL work out:thumbup: You're already one step ahead of the scammers because you are being careful:) It'll happen, don't worry:)!!! |
I don't know if there is a list because I am new but if there isn't you might get a list of areas you have relatives/friends and ask YT members for references in those areas. |
I'm not sure if you have your heart set on a puppy, but I found my dream Yorkie on www.petfinder.com. She was a three-hour drive to pick up and three-hour drive back home but completely worth it The great thing about www.petfinder.com is that you put in your postal code or zip code, you can search for Yorkshire Terriers in order of being closest to your home. The website is truly an amazing resource! |
I was on pet finder all day yesterday until I was worn out...but you know what, somehow this internet yorkie thing is not working for me. I just envision going to someone's home and finding the right one. |
YOu guys I wish you could see this one breeder's baby nursery that I talked to on yesterday. Man it adjoins her bedroom and it has these jenny lyn cribs in it and everything, and the mother yorkie and the babies stay in there until they are older. IT is GORGEOUS! |

Try not to be swayed by cute nurseries. Good pedigrees, genetic testing and health screenings are much more important. A lot of backyard breeders have darling little nurseries for their puppies, but they are still breeding dogs that are not good representations of the breed and have not been screened for the health issues that the breed is prone to like liver disease and luxating patellas. A member on a Maltese forum I belong to got her first Maltese from a local lady. She said the house was a dream, immaculately clean and the puppy nursery was adorable with little human baby playpens. It even had little receiving blankets folded on shelves. Unfortunately, this woman knew nothing about genetics and didn't do any health screening. The puppy she bought is now five years old and has a number of chronic diseases including epilepsy and luxating patellas. She's got big vet bills with him, but she is the lucky one. Her friend got a female from the same littler and she died from liver disease at age two. Sadly, this woman is aware of these health problems, but still continues to breed her dogs. Don't forget, the puppies being sold in the Pets of Bel Air pet store that was just busted were displayed in little cribs, too. They all came from puppy mills. :( Did you contact any of the breeders on the YTCA list I posted for you? They may be able to recommend breeders even closer to you. That will be your best chance of getting a healthy puppy that will grow up to look and act like a Yorkie is supposed to. |
