Well i asked a new vet.. I was downtown and saw a vet clinic and decided to check it out. I've been looking around for where i want to get London spayed cause she is a tiny and don't want to go just anywhere or to my vet cause someone told me not to get operations done there. So i asked the lady at the desk about how much it would be to spay London there, they said for the spay, teeth and appt. w/ bloodwork it will be about $650. They said they spay tinies all the time and that it's actually easier to spay the small ones:confused: Is that true? I asked them if they can remove her dew claws(she has 2 that the breeder didn't remove) and the lady said no why would i do that? and that it's painfull. I heard i can have it done from other ppl:( Her nails keep getting stuck on things. Anyway i also asked if i can take her home the same day, she said no, she has to stay overnight but that they have 24 hr ppl there. idk if i would trust that. I remember someone here posting that their yorkie almost died after she got spayed and that if she had not noticed her lethargy and taken her to the vet she prob. would have lost her. So i want to bring her home the same day. Also when she asked me her age and i told her she said well she should have been spayed at 4 mos and looked dumbfounded when i told her she needs some baby teeth removed, like it's not common for them not to lose all their babyteeth. Umm London was only about 1 lb at 4 mos, i don't think it would have been safe to spay her then:mad: Also most her babyteeth have fallen out but she has about 4, the pointy ones. Anyway what do you guys think? Also if anyone know of any great vets in ny please let me know |
OMG, I'm still in shock over the price..I go to the animal shelter, pay $45 and I get the anesthesia and spaying done for free(other than the $45)..Wow.. How small is your baby(maybe you wrote it and I didn't see it)..I had my one spayed at 3 lbs. and she did fantastic.. |
The vets here say 5-6 mos. and that they like to wait until that age, as they like them to be a little bigger..(this is what the vet said I'm using now)..red flag and I would stay away from that place..now as far as the staying all night, the vets around here keep the females all night after spaying, but, the males get to go home that night..When I get Ginger spayed, I'm going to ask if i can bring her home where I will be with her. |

My vet actually told me (unless I spay) to wait until Mckenzie is a year old to see if her teeth fall out naturally, so I think the vet was wrong about that :( We pay about 350 for each of our dogs spay/teeth removal which includes pre bloodwork, pain meds, laser surgery.. |
A lot of vets are spaying earlier than 6 months now...I've seen several that start at 16 weeks (and even younger). But London would have been too small at 4 months. I do think $650 is expensive for a spay by itself, but if it included teeth extractions, a teeth cleaning, bloodwork, and an overnight stay then it's reasonable. Honestly, expensive to me but I'm assuming the cost of living is higher in New York City than Texas. Yes, she can have her dewclaws removed. I recommend it because they can tear on something, causing her more pain then just having them removed to begin with. She'll already be on pain meds for her spay and be resting and recovering for that so she's not going to be in much more pain from having her dewclaws removed. Definitely find a vet that will do it. I can't believe the wouldn't do it  So far as staying overnight, I think it is okay to leave them overnight as long as they have 24-hour staff monitoring them constantly. I'm just not okay with staying overnight if no one is there to watch them. The person whose dog had complications brought her home because no one was at her vet's office overnight. She said her dog would have died there because no one was there. So yeah, when no one is there to watch them, no way would I leave my dog overnight. Hha - $45 must not include any pre-op bloodwork or pain meds. It is VERY important to get bloodwork done when anaesthesia is involved....in most cases, the dog is fine but there could be something going on that you don't know about and the anaesthesia could kill them |

NYC sucks for vet prices. Spaying Paddington and removing 2 retained baby teeth at 6 months was $500!! |

This is the info they have on my vet's website :) Laser Surgical Technology PDF Print E-mail Clinical Benefits of Laser Surgery Laser surgery is recognized in human and veterinary medicine for its benefits to both patient and surgeon. While several types of lasers are used for different applications, the primary device for soft tissue surgery in small and mixed animal practices is a carbon dioxide laser. Reduced Pain The CO2 laser beam seals nerve endings as it cuts through tissue. This reduces the amount of pain the patient feels during and after surgery. Reduced Bleeding The CO2 laser beam cauterizes and seals small blood vessels as it cuts. This laser energy achieves hemostasis and provides the surgeon with a bloodless surgical field in most procedures. Reduced Swelling There is no physical contact between the laser and the surgical region, eliminating the tearing and bruising of tissue associated with traditional surgical methods. Lymphatic vessels are also sealed. Reduced Infection Laser energy acts as an antibacterial agent by producing high temperatures, effectively eliminating microorganisms. Quicker Recovery As a result of all of the above, laser surgery provides the benefit your clients will appreciate the most: a quicker recovery for their pet. |

I spayed Bella at 10 months and had a few teeth pulled. She did have to stay overnight and I think it was about $250.00 total. |

Have you asked any of the members in the Yorkie Power Play group? I think they would could be a great resource since they are in your area. |
I don't know anything about NY prices, except they are more expensive, but my vet here in CA charged me $220, which included the spay, teeth removal (4), teeth cleaning, pain meds and blood work. My little girl only weighs 2.11 ounces and she came through like a trooper, she didn't even need her pain meds :) |
I can't believe the difference in prices of vets and have always noticed on different threads how much more expensive it is in other areas. I paid about $150 for Maddie's and Libby's spay and that included bloodwork. I had to pay a little extra for Libby because she needed some teeth pulled, but I think it was only $8 a tooth or something like that. Regarding the dew claws, I have read that having dew claws removed later than the first few days of life, is so terribly painful and quite a long recovery. I remember someone saying that they didn't recommend it because it is so hard on the puppy. I think I may have read that on one of the threads here. Maybe you should do a little more research on dew claws. Good luck in finding the right vet to do the surgery! Both my girls came home the same day. I think they do better being home and feel much more secure. |

Just spent over $400.00 I am in Pasco County in Florida and I just spent $410.00 and that is no spay, three teeth removed and her dewclaws. That was with bloodwork, and take home medication. pooh's mum |
I found the thread about dew claw removal and if you look at post #7, there is a link with info. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sho...t=claw+removal I'm sure not trying to start a debate here...just wanted you to be aware that having dew claws removed as an adult is major compared to when they are newborns...another thing that I would be concerned about would be the additional time the pup has to be under the anesthesia to have dew claws removed. |

I was sitting at my phone and I was called the minute she went in for surgery and the minute she came out. The Vet had a vet that did the dental work, and she did the laser on her dewclaws. pooh's mum |

When you talk about NYC, you know the prices are going to be higher because their rents & salaries are higher. And they factor all that into the fee. Oh yes, I let Friday stay there overnight because I knew the vet tech who was there at night. I had faith in the vet. I had had Monday spayed there as well. I figured I was not going to be staying up all night and heaven forbid something went wrong, I'd rather have her in the hospital where they can give her immediate care. (but that is just me) Good Luck when you do have London spayed. |
wow im in awww over spaying costs its a clinic in a city called fresno,ca about 1.5 hours and they do it for $65... on average hereits $170-185 IF THAT:thumbup: |
prices Until you live in an area like D.C. or NYC you really never have a concept of how expensive things are compared to the rest of the country. When I moved here I said we were going to find a place to rent for 1000... then after looking a roach infested places... I said 1500... well... eventually we settled on a 2500mo place that is the same size as my house back home which I pay only 500mo for. I can't even imagine what a place the size of mine would be in NYC where every square inch is so valuable. If you drive 1hr south of here the vets... orthodontist... everything drops almost in half (and a lot of times the drs. have offices here and there... but charged that much diff. in their 2 offices). The problem I see is if people will pay it... people will charge it! It is a vicious cycle. I had a surgery performed on a male puppy whose mother ate his umbilical too deep this summer. It caused a huge hernia (but he lived... which is unusual in that situation) and I didn't dock his tail because I thought he was going to die. So... dew claws... tail docked...huge hernia operation ... blood work... post op antibiotics and pain meds.... all for $60 at a tiny little vet clinic an hour south of where I am from in Arkansas. That here would have easily been close to 1000 w/ that massive of a hernia! |
I had my little guy nuetered when he was nine months old. I was going to have it done at six months, but my vet wanted to wait and see if he gained a little more weight. He also had some back dew claws, the breeder I got him from said I would want to have them removed when he was nuetered, she didn't realize he had them. So he had the blood work done, was nuetered, had to have several teeth pulled, ear hair pulled, dew claws removed, and nails clipped. I was able to take him home that night, he was very sore and out of it that night. He was much better the next day, and the day after that, back to his old self. It all cost around $350. :) |
