Tipping the Groomer?
 

We are considering taking Daisy to a groomer and are thinking of getting her coat shortened. A friend of ours has recommended a mobile groomer and has told us she does not tip her. She says since it is a business and she is providing a service that she is already paying why should she tip her.

So here is my question:

If you take your pup to a groomer, do you tip & how much do you tip?

If the groomer is a mobile groomer & comes to you , do you tip & how much?

Yes we tip the groomer. Georgie's haircut usually cost 40$ and we tip 10-12$. Georgie does really well at this groomer, and he has the same lady each time. He isn't shaken up or pissed when he's returned to me. Anyway I think it's important to show the groomer your appreciation.

Oh and this isn't a mobile groomer. :)

If you tip for a human haircut, you should tip for a doggie haircut. If you are really happy with the result then tip more.

Hi Everyone - I am new to YT ! (heads up: I talk ALOT!)
My mobile groomer does not charge a "travel fee" where another mobile groomer did. She added $10 to the bill for "travel." Since the groomer I use now does not charge the fee, I give him the $10 as a tip, then I write a check for the grooming. I have a no fuss yorkie and a no fuss bischon that I pay $40 each for the entire package *he even does their teeth. They are both kept short and are brushed frequently. If there is some major grooming needing to be done, I always tip higher. With Christmas approaching I will be generous, for I truly appreciate the convenience of having the kids "spa" time right in front of their home!! I believe Ted and Sam love it as well. :animal36

My groomer charges $35/per dog. I have 2 dogs. I usually pay her $85. Thats a $15 tip. About 20% ... its just like anyone else who provides a service. A hairdresser, waiter, chauffer, delivery guy, etc... you tip them when they provide a service. The money they make (unless they own the business) usually goes to the business and the tips go straight to the person providing the service.

I didn't tip my groomer in CT, because she was the owner. Same thing with my hairdresser, he was the owner, so sometimes I did, and sometimes I didn't. In Ireland you don't tip stylists, taxi drivers etc.

I take my pup to Petsmart. I really like the lady that takes care of him. The puppy package is 14.99 right now, so I usually tip her $5.

If the mobile groomer is owned by the groomer should you still tip?

If you are happy with the work...let them know.
 

My mobile groomer owns the business and he truly deserves the tips! I can't think of a reason I would not tip the one actually doing the work: whether they are the owner or not. (I even tip the shampoo girl where I get my haircut) It's nothing too outrageous, just a way of saying thanks for doing a good job. :animal36

This may just be my opinion but People who own their own businesses that provide services rather than goods sometimes deal with higher operating costs. And there is always competition!
There isn't a large corporation backing them up or a larger employee pool. I like the idea of a person that truly loves their work and I can TRUST. I have taken my "kids" to commercial type groomers and it was traumatic for all of us. I tipped the poor groomer but came to discover many employees handled my two dogs. The guy putting them in cages. The two that shampooed them. The guy that put them in the dryers. On and on. If something happened, there is no way of discovering who did what and when. Too confusing. Too many people handling them. Just too much activity. They came back stressed out and I was unhappy. Or, I would find the groomer I requested called off, got sick, had an emergency or whatever and could never find out who actually groomed my dogs and what they did.
If you are unhappy with the service do not tip. Say so. If you are pleased: TIP. It helps offset insurance, registration, license fees and on and on. I feel if it is the owner you are dealing with they will want to keep you as a customer - tipping shows you appreciate their work. If you have hard to handle dogs - tip more. It's just the right thing to do. I don't "tip" my vet but I try to bring goodies for the office staff at times around holidays. Just a token of my appreciation.:aimeeyork

I have always thought if the groomer owns the business, they are setting their own prices and so I have not tipped. Actually, I had never even thought about doing so & we're going to a new groomer tomorrow.

I have also heard the same thing,my groomer owns the shop,however I still tip her even when she misundersatnds me.;)

I am so glad to see this thread and see that, like me, most of you tip. I always tip my groomer and she and her sister own the business. I have always thought it was just and extra "thank you" for taking such good care of my babies. My husband has always disagreed. He said I shouldn't be tipping them. He even taped something off one of the talk shows this week that was saying who should and should not be tipped, how much, etc. That person actually said that dog groomers should not be tipped. Well, too bad, I don't care what they say. I have always tipped and will continue to do so. I also give her a little extra tip at Christmas. Usually $20.00. Should I also be doing this?

My groomer charges $40 and I go every 7 weeks. When I tried to tip her the first time she wouldn't take it, saying that the $40 was meant tobe an all inclusive price and she won't accept tips. I tipped last year at Xmas in a Xmas Card so it wasn't awkward. She is wonderful, loves my Buddy and has her business set up in the basement of her VERY lovely home on a lake and only takes one dog in the morning and one in the pm so obviously is not in it for the money. This year I'm going to give her a personalized Xmas Ornament from Buddy.

I tip my groomer she only charges 25.00 for a face, feet, and fanny since Gizzie is so tiny, so i always give her an extra 7-10 dollars

I agree but we do give our wonderful groomer a $100.00 bill for a Christmas present every year.

My groomer charges $40 and I tip him $10. He does not own the shop but I tried several groomers before I found him and Lucy always came home upset. With him she is fine so it's totally worth it to me..

Unless your groomer owns her own shop, YES you should tip them. They don't make that much money and really appreciate their clients tipping. You should always tip anyone in the service industry - waiters, hairdressers, groomers, etc.

I always tip the groomer. Believe me, they remember who tips and who doesn't.

I just took 2 of mine in today, the total bill was $46, and I left a $5 tip..A lot of people don't give anything, it's up to you as to what you want to give.

I haven't tipped in the past, but I recently found a new groomer that was so great with the girls. She did such a good job and was very timely. The girls were in such good spirits when I picked them up that I knew we'd found the right place. I tipped her and will continue to do so.

I am in florida, north of tampa, so if anyone knows a good groomer then please let me know. I want a puppy cut on my oldest, he is only 4 pounds. so any suggestions on good groomers would be welcome for my area...thanks

I'm a mobile groomer and I own my own business. I've been grooming since September and I've only had 2 people tip me out of all the dogs I've groomed. I was kinda suprised but now I've just gotten use to it and I don't expect it. I received a $5 tip from one and a $20 tip from the other because she was extra impressed and she loved how her furbaby wasn't scared. I guess she had never found one that he didn't shake with. I always tipped the groomer Tilly use to go to before I started $5. If I wasn't grooming I would of taken her elsewhere and if I liked the groomer a lot I would of tipped more than that. I'm putting a lot of trust into the groomer with Tilly and I know they look forward to the customers that do tip. I want Tilly to be in the best of care.

Well I sure wish you were closer to me. I am looking for one. Have had no luck, maybe I need to start a new thread to see if I get anyone that way.

Always tip the groomer. I have a 5 year old yorkie and we love 'spa' treatments. We keep Gentry short...they charge extra for scissor cuts...but I like it better. They also clean her teeth, trim her nails, and dress her up. Oh, and did I mention they provide the cutest report cards. They charge $55 and I tip $10 for the extra attention they give her. It's the little extra things that I think deserve a tip!

Roxie's groomer owns the grooming salon along with her husband. Roxie gets groomed every 4 weeks and it costs $40. I always tip $15. They are in love with Roxie and they take excellent care of her. Roxie's cut always comes out perfectly, I could not be more please with their services. They even give me small gifts from time to to time including a handmade picture frame with a picture of Roxie as well as jeweled hairpins. They are so sweet and thoughtful, I love them!

Great groomers = tips.
 

Yes Iheartroxie, it shows appreciation. I always tip wait staff, paper carriers, give Christmas gifts to letter carriers. I just want to make sure my groomer is thanked. He is an independent business owner and truly loves his work. I let him know he is doing a great job by tipping. The woman that cuts my hair, as well. If she spends the time, tries to follow what I want, etc. TIPS. I also tip the kid carrying groceries out to my car. And the nail tech doing my manis. The higher the fee goes for the service, I try to use some judgment there. If it were up to my husband, he wouldn't tip anyone. He usually doesn't. Although he has complained that many times he does service calls to people's homes for mistakes they make and he won't charge them the service call fee. He has said a little tip just for gas money would be nice. Hey dear, you get what you give. :rolleyes:
