New to Yorkie Talk Hello, my name is Linda. Last Sunday I bought my first Yorkie. Ruby, is a little female. She is 7 wks old. We named her Ruby, to commemerate our 40th Wedding Anniversary which is Dec 16th:) We are having a problem getting Ruby to eat. The breeder had her on Eukanuma puppy petite. Soaked in water. She will not eat it. Our Vet recommended cottage cheese and yogurt, because her stools are real runny. We're having a hard time getting her to eat that too. Does anyone have any suggestions? We're kinda off to a rough start. She's so adorable!! Linda:animal-pa |
shes young ,usally they are anywhere from 11weeks to 12 weeks before they are adopted try some boiled chicken and rice and maybe some good premiume puppy can dog food and mix it with the kibbles .welcome to yorkie talk and congrats on your new furbaby. |
She is very young to be away from her mother. Most breeders prefer to wait until they are 12 weeks old. How much does she weigh? Has she been tested for coccidia and giardia? Both will cause runny stool and could potentially be dangerous. Did the breeder give you any type of health guarantee when you purchased the pup? I hope she will be okay...they are delicate little babies sometimes. |
:animal-pa this may not be the most healthy thing but when my little smokey dont eat well we give him bologna...he loves it and it gets him to eating...also he loves any of the dog foods with gravies or sauces......good luck....they can be scary.....just ask a lot of questions....there are a lot of nice people who are willing to help......:animal36 :animal-pa |
Congratulations on Ruby. I agree with everyone else that she was too young to be taken from her mommy. Maybe the runny stools are a result of the diet change. Be very careful of her blood sugar dropping too. How much does she weigh? Do you have pictures? We would love to see little Ruby...(I love the name btw) |
I am by no means an expert, I'm a new momma too but my reagan is on the can puppy food from pro plan in chicken & rice that you can get from petsmart- I also put a few kibbles of the pro plan (puppy) dry food in there in another bowl just to see if she's ready for it & so far she's sticking w/the wet food & occasionaly touches the dry but she really does like the wet food I also change it out three times a day. I hope this helps. |
My Cali was like that when I got her. I had to feed her canned food to gether to finally eat. Try some of the premium brands, Wellness, Solid Gold and try and entice her with that. Welcome and congratulations!!! |

I got Meka at 9 wks.... My breeder also had her on Eukanueba + water. She started acting funny w/ eating for a few days and we stopped adding water to the kibble... and she seemed to like it that way. However, after being a member here on YT, I've learned that Eukanueba isnt very good food and it had caused Meka to itch like crazy. Switching to a different brand might be better for your furbaby. Something w/o corn, and other fillers... I now use Chicken Soup for the Puppy Lovers Soul and Meka is so happy. Hope this helps and Welcome to the YT :D Cant wait to see pics :) |
First off, welcome to YT!!! Second, congrats on lil Ruby! To help you out with her not eating, have you tried feeding her by hand? Sometimes that will help get them to eat a little. Hope she relaxes soon and settles into her new wonderful home! |
Congratulations on your new baby. She is really young and may need her food very finely chopped up. I'd add some moisture to it to entice her to eat. They usually all like chicken and rice, so give that a try. |

Yes, as others have stated 7 weeks is way too young. Mine are normally still nursing at that age. You can try canned puppy formula heated to room temp and try canned food as well. I'd also suggest having nutrical on hand for her. You can try baby food as well. Even baby cereal too. Good luck and feel free to contact me with any questions. Welcome again!!!! |
:wavey: Welcome to YT. Can't wait to see pics of Ruby. She is so young to be away from her mommy. hopefully you all will adjust. I thought you might like to know about this food analysis website - as others have mentioned, knowing about a quality food is so important (fyi a 6 star food here is probably too much for a yorkie - but 4 & 5 stars would be good) http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com/dog_f...ndex.php/cat/1 |
Welcome to YT!! |
Thanks for your help. Ruby loves Royal Canin. She is now doing well. Having a little trouble with biting. Any suggestions? |
Congratulations on Ruby!! Welcome to YT & please get as much advice since she is so young to be away from her mommy. |
Ruby is eating now Sorry to let you all wonder what was going on. So much hussling to do for Christmas, and then a trip to Georgia to see our daughter and her Airforce hubby. After many tries, we found that Ruby likes Royal Canin. She is not on the formula for puppies 9 weeks to 10 months. What I like about it is that it does not smell like traditional dog food, and I like how the food is shaped in small thin triangles. This makes it easier for a puppy to bit and chew. My next question is how do I discourage her from biting me. I've tried the Dog Whisper tactic of turning her on her back and holding her while saying, "No Bit" in a stern voice. But she refuses to make eye contact and when I let her go she tries again to bite me. Again thanks for all of yours help. |
My new puppy is 8wks old and we did the dry + water and warm it. Let it be soupy and then add mighty dog canned with the wet mixture. My puppy gets so excited when I'm holding her I have to hand feed her by the spoon for at least 2 bites then take her bowl to the floor so she can eat. She was a runt and she has really gained weight. I have also a bowl of dry and a bowl of water for her at all times. Then she gets feed in the evening again fresh mixture of the same. She is a piggy when it comes to eating. I hope your Ruby gets on track. |
Keep plenty of things for her to chew on..maybe try a little kong with the peanut butter or cheese filling in it, or what mine like are the dental chews I get from the vet..I also give mine premium rawhides from drsfostersmith, but when they get down so far, I throw them out..when she bites you, yell ouch, they say they realize they're hurting you..good luck |
Hi Linda. :) Welcome to Yorkie Talk. As you can see there are so many good people here ready and willing to help with your concerns about little Ruby. I'm so glad she is doing better with her eating. As for the biting, she is very young so maybe she just needs a little more time to learn that biting is a No No. Can't wait to see pictures of her. Congratulations on you wedding anniversary. :congrats: :welcome4: |

Welcome |
Hi Linda and welcome to YT. Congratulations on your new fur-baby, but boy, 7 weeks...ouch. Hope she has no complications down the road. As for the biting, all puppies bite, it's what they do best, and how they learn to defend themselves. It's just instinct. First off do NOT play with the puppy with your hand. They think this is the thing to bite and play with if you do. I have a puppy myself that wants to bite everything that moves. If they bite down on your hand, DO NOT take your hand away, or they win! It gives them power and is putting them in the alpha position, which you do not want. YOU are the alpha. When they bite down, don't move, but just make a loud sound such as NO or ACK. I use the ACK and it works every time. Sooner or later they stop biting the hand, but may go after the feet or pant legs. :D Good luck with your little baby. Hope to meet and see pictures of Ruby soon. :D |
Hi! and a very warm welcome to you and Ruby!:) The name Ruby was my first choice for a while for my baby girl then i settled on the name Pixie! Her registered name is 'Chevawn Such A Diamond' I wanted Diamond in the name because my grandparents were celebrating their Diamond wedding anniversary in october last year! 7 weeks is very young to have left the mother, My Pixie was 14 weeks and only 1lbs 8oz when we brought her home with us, but with special care and attention from you, she should do just fine and don't forget, you have a lifeline here on YT 24hrs a day 7 days a week if you are ever worried about anything! Best wishes.:) |
