I had a mini-meltdown at the vet's today Ever since we brought Marcus Aurelius home in August he has been sick. He was really bad (almost lost him) but he has been doing better the past two months. His cough has never gone away though. We are in constant contact with our vet and go in atleast once a week. Over the past week, Marcus' cough has been getting worse again. So we decided to go in today just to make sure he is ok. When I dropped him off, I was talking to the vet tech. I explained my frustration that he's been home for over 3 months now and he is still coughing and that's its never gone away. I am really close to all the vet techs and the vet since Mr. Marcus basically lived there for over a month. She called about two hours later and told me he was ready to pick up and that the dr wanted to talk to me. So when I got there she asked me to step into one of the exam rooms (which she never does, normally we just chat in the back around the coffee pot). I started to feel really anxious. She pulled out his x-ray from today and showed it to me. His lungs were perfectly fine and she explained that she can't understand why he is still coughing. She said that she's done everything she can think of and has put him on just about every drug in the hospital. She said that she wanted me to go to their other office and see the vet who is the owner of both offices. She said she was just as frustrated as me that we can't make him better. At this point, all of the stress I've been under lately just started pouring out of me. I don't know why, but I just started balling (which I NEVER do). She came over and just hugged me. As we pulled apart, I saw her wiping her own tears away. "Why are you crying?" I asked. She explained she's upset that she's done everything she can over the past few months and he still hasn't gotten completely better. We talked for a little more and I started to feel better. It's not that she doesn't want me as a patient anymore, she just wanted me to get a second opinion. I know I probably sound like a crazy lady for being this upset, I just feel like a bad mommy who can't make her baby better. Thanks for letting me vent, I just needed to get this off of my chest. |
aww I am sorry the both of you are going through all this. Hopefully you can get some answers really soon. Sending prayers & positive thoughts your guy's way :hands: |
Oh sweetie! Hugs from me too! I know that's tough, but I am impressed with your vet. There aren't many doctors out there who will say that they don't know. I think you really might want a second opinion, but I personally would go to a totally different vet - not one connected to her practice. I'm not implying anything bad here, but sometimes it's hard to look at a problem in a fresh way if you know the people involved. Poor baby, I hope you find a solution soon. |
Oh Shel!!!! I feel so bad for you!!!  :hug:I will be praying for Marcus. I think it is great that your vet thought enough of you and Marcus to have you get a second opinion. Perhaps a new set of eyes & ears examining Marcus will turn out well. On a positive note....the fact that the x-ray's were clear has to be a good thing!!!!! Don't feel bad for breaking down in the office today. We all would of done the same thing. It is so stressful when our furbabies are sick they are just like children to us. Keep us posted!!!! I will be praying!!!! :hands: :hands: :hands: |
I'm sorry you're going thru this and hope the new Vet fixes him up. Good luck. |
Awh, I'm so sorry to hear about that, what a frustrating experience! At least you know that your vet cares about your baby (almost) as much as you do! I hope that you find out what's going on really soon and get your baby on the mend. I love his name by the way! Best wishes for you and your little furbaby to get better soon! |
awww. So sorry this is happening. I hope things start to get better for you guys. Poor baby. :( |
It's frustrating, but besides his cough he is doing well right? As long as he is doing much better than he was before, shows how much you care for him and willing to do for him. It may not even end up being something physical with Marcus, maybe an allergy of some sort you haven't figured out yet. |
Wow - it sounds like you have a terrific vet!! |
Awww Iam so sorry you are going thru this:( prayers and hugs comming your way:love:  |
I feel so bad for you and Marcus. Cali was like your Marcus for the first 8 months I had her we were at the vet or er every week. Cali had kennel cough when I got her and gave it to my then 8 year old pom. It took Cali 3 months to completely stop coughing and even longer for my pom. Hopefully he will get better soon or the second opinion will give you some answers. |
So sorry your going thought this. I hope you find an answer soon. Sending big hugs your way!!! |
You don't sound like a crazy lady! I totally understand what you mean. Chip got really sick and as soon as he'd get better, he'd get even worse again. It all started with a little soft poop. Then antibiotics. Then he got better and starting pooping blood and throwing up. I had to take him to the vet two times in one day and the next day he was in the hospital all day with everything and almost died. Then he got better and we thought we were out of the woods, then he got sick AGAIN with it. All of that was caused by a lyme's vaccination. I'm not doing that again. We were so frustrated and didn't know what to do, so don't feel crazy! Your being a good concerned mommy! Hopefully this other vet will have another idea of what to do to help him. There is something going on and there has got to be a way to fix it. Good luck! Chip and Smokey send him puppy kisses! |
I'm sorry about your baby :( I'm glad you have such a good relationship with your vet. It's definitely a sign of a good vet when they don't hesitate to refer you for a second opinion or to a specialist when they don't know. No vet is going to know it all. I hope she can help refer you to someone who can figure it out |
Aaw Shel, so sorry that Marcus is still coughing. No wonder you had a meltdown! Just being called into the exam room must have put such fear into you, but at least you got the encouraging news about the clear lungs. Your Vet sounds great; she totally did the right thing for you and your baby in suggesting you get a second opinion. Please keep us updated after your next appointment. Hugs to both of you, Lauren:ghug: |
Aw poor you! I'm sure you had the melt down because this has being going on for so long. I hope they can find out what the problem is soon. Hugs to you. |
:hug60: what a shame for the poor lil guy. sometimes ya just gotta let it out..if not you may just get sick! hope they find out his problem soon. did you guys explore the allergies? |
:ghug: If you think you're crazy for having a meltdown ... join the club!! I would never have held up for as long as you have! I will be praying for your baby. Hopefully "fresh eyes" will get to the bottom of this and he will be good as new before you know it. Please keep us updated. |
Poor baby and poor YOU ! I can't believe how many people are getting sick little puppies - it's heartbreaking.... Wishing you all the best with your Marcus - having a puppy should be a happy time not filled with vet visits...I hope they find out whats wrong and chin up !! |
when a pet stays at the vet for awile and you have to treat them dailt they do get attached to some of them and it hurts to see they don't seem to get better! there was a rottie that came in where i worked that had a ear infection that they didnt bring him in to be treated and something else was happening with him anyways he held his head completely sideways and would try to eat anyone who came near him i don't know why maybe because he didn't feel good he was very skinny but he got to where he liked me not anyone else but me! he would wag his little stubby tail when i came back to see him take him out or feed him he went home i thought he was better then they called on day saying they wanted to have him put down?! they brought him back he had a whole in one of his rear hips and couldnt even walk i dont know what happened he just lay there didn't try to lift his head or even growl i was very upset and hes not even my pet!! he was put donw i got to tell him bye but ill never forget capone! we do get attached and very upset at times we also get use to bad things happening and people getting upset also . i hope your baby gets better soon!! |
You do not sound like a crazy lady....you sound like a loving fur-mommy who wants her baby to be all better; just like all the rest of us (crazy ladies)! I hope you and Marcus find out what is ailing him through the second opinion and that treatment will make that nasty cough go away soon. Hugs and prayers to you:hug: :hands: |
your poor baby i hope they can figure it out and treat what ever it is. we should have a melt down club and i will join to. even when you do know whats wrong you will still melt down, i even melt down when lacey has a good day now lol. the other day she actually played with me i called my friend balling because i was so happy. usually i'm not a crier eather but when it comes to kids or dogs it all seems overwhelming when they are sick and you dont know what to do to make them better. |

Awww Sweetie I can feel your frustration just reading about yout baby. Who wouldn't feel the same way? After three months with not getting better would cause anyone to feel frustrated and cry. Is it possible that something in the house is making him cough? An allergy of somekind. Do you have a cat? Just a thought. Your vet sounds like a sweetheart to react the way she did. Being frustrated and admitting it makes her a great vet in my eyes. Good luck with the second opinion. I hope and pray both of you(your baby) finally get releif. Hugs, |

Poor baby:( We have been very fortunately in that Ellie has never had a cough. It must be so frustrating for you. Hopefully the new vet will be able to figure it out. Ellie\'s vet is very similar to yours. When we had liver issues going on and urination issues that wouldn\'t clear up and allergies starting, she was getting really frustrated because, despite her best effort, nothing was working. We almost had to go to a specialist but things started lookng better just in time. You could tell she just wanted to help so bad. It must be hard to be a vet. I really feel for people that can\'t find a vet that cares. |
I don\'t blame you for being upset. Their so tiny and helpless. I hope the second vet can figure out the problem. |
