Anyone use Petsmart? Anyone use petsmart for dog training? Is it a waste of money? |
if your dog learns NOTHING, the socialization is amazing. However that being said Layla has taken begining, intermediate and we will be taking advanced in the new year... and she has learned SO much! |
Thanks. So it has been worth your money? They said if I didnt feel happy with a class she can be left behind at no charge to take the class again. So it is working out good for you? |
My friends Chi learned squat. He was 2 weeks out of finishing classes and he was a terror throught my house. He even peed on my Tv! ( bog widescreen that sits on floor/speakers on floor).... argh! |
Diva took the beginners class and I think it was very beneficial....I think it depends on the trainer too. I had a lady named Kathy who was excellent. A neighbor of mine had some guy and she is not very happy with him...She's talked to Kathy and along with my recommendations, she's going to retake it under Kathy. When I got Foxxy, I used a lot of the techniques I learned and it has been working out very well. So I say it's worth it but you should talk to each trainer as you go to the store and see who you feel most comfortable with. Diva was 5 1/2 months when I took her. |

I really have my own personal doubts about there. I know they do guarantee products and prob the training. Marcerella02 were you consistent on your training and that is why you lil furbutt turned out great? GinosMommy was your friend not consistent on training? I have a co-worker who used bark busters and was had. |

Chip has taken and finished beginner and intermediate at two different PetSmarts. Nothing to do with the trainers, just that one opened up way closer to us. Chip LOVED going to class, he a had a bit of a socialization shell at first but now is a social butterfly. I did work with him alot out of class to maximize the benefits of each lesson. After the new year we are going to take the Advanced class. You may also want to look into private schools that offer small dog only classes, since there tends to be (at least here) alot of large dogs in the class which scare the little ones. btw: way off top. but are you going to Santa Paws at the Ritz on Sunday? |
I'm sure it depends on the individual trainer that the store has. I think it's important to remember that with any training class, that it's up to you to work with your dog outside of class. The class you go to once a week is not going to train your dog - they are really to teach YOU how to train your dog. Your dog will only become trained if you work with it each day during the week in between classes..and then continue to practice after the class is over |
Petsmart also has a 100% guarantee if you keep your receipt |
I did it twice & loved it both times. I had two different trainers and they were both wonderful. I'd definitely check out the trainer (maybe watch a class first) and see what you think. I think that what you and your dog get out of it depends on the trainer. |
We had an amazing trainer at Petsmart. She loved dogs, was thorough, listened to our needs, and really cared. I remember she spent like, an hour on the phone with me one night when I was really frustrated. |
Bailey had a wonderful trainer at Petsmart. We have taken the class a couple of times before I got Angel for socialization. The first few classes the first time Bailey was very shy around other dogs and sat under my chair. She had a Great Dane friend at her last class, it was a riot a 100lb+ dog and Bailey barely 5 lbs. He had a huge crush on Bailey and was very protective of her. Bailey learned a couple of tricks and she stays unless released. Our trainer said I could bring both girls in at no charge whenever I wanted. I would recommend PetSmart. It does depend on the trainer. You can meet the trainers before the class starts to see which one you are more comfortable with. |

My advice: It is a well priced class. The consistency of going to each class and practicing every day will teach something to you and your dog. It is a good place to start. And Yorkie Yummies help TREMENDOUSLY! I swear I could teach my pups ANYTHING with those! |
How much are these classes? We don't have a Petsmart in our town but there is one about 30 minutes away. Does Petco do these classes does anyone know? With Koda he is so very smart. I have worked with him daily since we got him on so many things. But being that we live out in the country, he doesn't get a lot of socialization with other dogs. We only had a sweet Allie for 5 weeks. He did amazing with her. Also with our Black Lab and Beagles he is fine and very playful. BUT those are dogs he is used too. But I notice when we go to Petco and Pet Supplies Plus he tends to get really anxious at the sight of other animals sometimes. Would these classes help with that? (I am assuming so) I really want to start meeting up with people this summer and want him to be socialized. I know when someone comes to our home he gets very happy and excited. BUT he won't go up to them if they call him. He'll act like it but then turn around and start zoomies around the house, lol! Sorry OP, this just sort of all came out at once! Certainly not trying to hijack your post! ;) |
Rocky and Bella are taking the puppy class right now, and their doing good. I think it depends on the trainer though. Plus, you gotta work with your dog at home too. I really like it though. |

We're in puppy class right now and have an amazing trainer. In fact, last week her dog was there because she'd been groomed that day. She put her in a stay on the bench by where we do classs...the dog never moved for an 1hour and 15 minutes! It was amazing! Anyway, at this point Elphaba is so social that she doesn't usually do what we're trying to do in class...though sometimes she surprises me. But she always does everything the minute we get home. Our trainer says its good, she just wants to socialize at Petsmart and she's the most ridiculously friendly dog you've ever seen...so the socialization is really good for her. I plan to continue with additionally classes and keep with my same trainer. |
I think it depends more on the trainer teaching the class than anything else. The trainer at the PetSmart near me has a WONDERFUL trainer that I talk to and work with outside of pet smart. She does alot of work w/ dogs outside of her PetSmart role--she's been working w/ dogs for years and has worked w/ training service animals and does alot of training for agility events. I recommend her to everyone I come across! Ask the trainer questions and observe a class before committing your time (and money) to it. Hang out and ask some of the people who have used the class for their opinions. I just think you have to go in realizing that you are just being taught the basics and the methods to use--if the only time they are being enforced is during a few hour long classes, then they are not going to be very effective. You have to be consistant and continue with enforcing the training at home too. |
We went to Petsmart and my dog ended up knowing exactly the same as before the class. But I don't think it was a waste of money because we got to socialize a lot! |
What is the general cost for classes? |

This is so true! |
Ive been thinking about using them I have thought about them. Precious' vet is from Banfield (inside Petsmart) so I can kill two birds with one stone. I really dont care if she learns alot, just learn to stop having accidents before I get her leash on her to go outside. She will tinkle on me (UUGH!) while Im getting her leash on. LOL Good Luck with whatever you choose. JIM |
Well Roxy enrolled in classes today. She is sup start tomorrow but we can't go. They told us that the class we are missing we can make up this week with a one on one. She is starting in the beginners class. I will give everyone a weekly update on her training for others that are asking about it. The cost was 119.00 and you can retake the class if you are not happy. |
I brought Bella to their puppy training. I really feel WE benefited from it and it was worth the cost. I did it for the socilization mainly and it also taught me how to teach her to do stuff. My husband has always been our dog trainer and she is mine so I want to make sure she is smartest of them all ;) She had a great time there playing with the other pups and she learned some basics with practice at home. |

I took Shelby when she was younger (before we got Seymour). I thought the classes were great! We had a lot of fun. Shelby was the littlest dog in the class..... the only other small dog was a Shih tzu. It was funny during "social" time..... she wanted to sniff "dog butt" so bad, but all the dogs were much taller...... I considered bringing her doggie steps!:D The lessons that we learned were fun, and Shelby learned quickly. I shared the info to my hubby when we got home from each class and he enjoyed teaching Shelby, too. Once we got Seymour, we used the same techniques to teach him! I would love to go back and take another class after the holidays, but it just depends on my schedule. Plus I would have to decide on who gets to go! |
