Found a tick!! We went camping over the fourth and my husband found a tick on my little baby. He read somewhere that if you put vasoline on it. It will somther the tick and back out of the skin. We did that and the tick did back out so my husband could remove the tick. My little one got his vaccine for this because we do alot of camping but is there anything else we need to do. |
The vaccine is just for Lyme disease. There are other tick borne diseases that there is no vaccine for but they can be treated with antibiotics. Do you not use a topical like FrontLine or so? Keeping the ticks off might be the best way to go. I would recommend you ask your vet about that. The ticks that are easy to see are NOT theones that carry Lyme disease but they do carry the Rickettsiae which can cause Rocky Mt. Spotted fever. I am glad to hear the vaseline worke. If ever that doesn't work, try a cap full of alcohol held over the tick til it backs out. They take in air thru their bodies and you are suffocating them.A small amount of cooking oil, orany oil, will do the same thing. You can use the cap from the bottle is you have nothing else. Keep camping and keep healthy. |
Frontline is what I use..and I have never seen a tick on Maximus..I also gave the lyme vaccine |
Once my youngest daughter kept complaining about her ear hurting. I looked and looked, found nothing. Then she put her head on my lap and under the lip of the ear I saw the tick. I was hysterical, of course, hubby was at work. He's a fireman. I called the station and told him what was going on, that I was terrified it would crawl into her ear and he told me the same thing. Get a qtip, a glob of vaseline and leave it on until the tick lets go. It smothers them and it worked like a charm. I'll never forget that experience. I found a tick on my furbaby, who was on Advantage when I got her. My vet recommends Frontline Plus because it kills ticks as well as fleas and that is what my two are on. I have never seen another tick, flea or anything on them since changing to Frontline Plus. |
How do you find fleas and ticks on your babies? They are so small and dark and our babies fur is dark. How do you all find them?? |

Niether Missy or Max has had a tick but I used to live on a ranch and our golden retrievers and lab had them all the time. They are so gross, I hate ticks. |

What about fleas? How would you feel or see those? |
I think those hop...put on white pants and sock and you will see them jumping....I use the frontline plus and it kills all those things...speaking of which I have to put more on Maximus tonight |
I have never heard of that with the vaseoline. I will have to keep that in mind. |
Poor you! To find a tick must have been horrible! Luckily, Buddy has never had a tick. I also haven't heard of that with the vaseline either... Will remeber that, just incase we ever to find a tick on our baby. -Jade |

lucky for us - no fleas ever - but Chanel DID have them from her breeder - I found them after her first bath seeing the 'dirt' on her little tiny head....and yes - it was from fleas. Ticks are nasty creatures just like Fleas - Frontline Plus is the best treatment for both these leeching scaveging insects |

I just don't think there is any 100% prevention for a tick or a flea to NOT jump up on a pet. You are a good Mommy for examining your fur baby and finding the tick and removing it. Sometimes the best medicine is petting all over your fur baby from head to toe touching to see if anything feels foreign. We also camp and I spend minutes on end massaging Schatzie to see if any nasty bug has decided to land on her. There have been times I've found a tick on her (not imbedded) and killed the little sucker. |
It's so hard to tell if you see "Dirt" especially with Coco because her head is so dark. Her light areas are her grown and her face and legs. But I will definetely make sure to check. I have to give her Advantage today. Should I switch to Frontline?? She's been itching the last couple of days and doing the little teeth biting thing on her legs (like eating corn on cob). I wonder if she has any. I haven't seen or felt anything unusual and I just bathed her on Friday. |
Don't quote me on this but I don't think that Advnatage protects against ticks???>...am I wrong?....Frontline plus does both so I opted for that because I have started taking Maximus to the park on the weekend and I would have a heart attack...REALLY!!! |
Yea i think I might switch once the advantage is done in a couple of months. I would die if I found anything like that on Coco. I wouldn't know what to do. I just started taking her to the park, but I don't let her play in the grass yet. |
Frontline does repel both. BUT, you can also comb the coat every day, or more often if you have time, with a fine comb. I don't use a flea comb but a fine tooth Belgian metal 4 1/2 inch comb. Pat introduced me to them and I had a terrible time finding them. I order them 6 at a time. I have one in every purse--use it sometimes myself..I think I am calling them right and I buy them from Revival.. Pat, correct me if I am calling the small combs by the wrong name. |
yes i also think that frontline is the best in the market. thats what i use on my baby :D |
Jane has had a few ticks before I am not sure about Jeremiah though. I hope he doesn't get ticks because I would go crazy. We use Frontline and we also use Advantage. |
When we first got Baby we found 2 tick and it scared the hell out of me.My husband had remove it.Our vet recommended frontline and we haven't seen another one on any of our babies. They play out on the grass alot when weather permits and haven't found fleas, ticks or mite,so I'm assuming they work really good especially here when it gets pretty hot. |
K-9 Advantix I have Frontlline for my 8 lb Pom, but the smallest weight range they sell is 11-20lbs. this is too much for my 3 lbs yorkie. i heard K-9 advantix is good, because they sell for under 10lbs. Also, what about Revolution? i'm curious if they sell anything i can use on such a small pup. i like that it protects against fleas, ticks AND heartworm!! if anyone knows about any of these, please let me know!! Thanks |
We went and got frontline plus and put it on him last night. My understanding is you use every month?? Also, does anyone know how long after you appied it should you wait before bathing?? I got it from my vet but is there any other place to buy it cheaper I know you guys always have good sources!! Thanks!! :D |

Thanks... I just got so scared about finding the tick on him I didn't want to wash the stuff off. I agree I think I will wait three days. |
I bought Tick meds from my vet and I thought for sure it was advantix but is Frontline Plus. If I wouldnt have read this thread I would have forgotten that I have to put the Frontline Plus on both my furbabies today! The first month I found another tick on my baby but it was not under the skin it was crawling around by his neck. I dont think it got to even bite him because I grabbed it with a tweezer and popped it on my bathroom counter. There was no blood at all. And the tick was not engorged at all. It's been about a month and I have not found another one on them. They are indoors all day and I check them in their ears, head, neck, back, groin, butt and comb through their entire body. I am going to try brewiers yeast(sp?) . I just need to know what part of Walmart I can get it from! lol Genie |
I'm curious what does the Brewers yeast do?? |
It repels ticks/fleas . Some breeders and pet owners swear by this. I will ask someone who uses this on her furbabies so she can give a more detailed description of what it does. Genie |
It is the tiny ticks called DEER TICKS that carry Lyme disease. They can be no biggerthan the head of a pin and are extremely hard to find. That is why it is so importand to prevent them from staying on your baby-repel them. That is what Frontline does. The Frontline PLUS has been re-labelled to show it can be used on dogs over 12 weeks and UNDER 11 pounds.. |
I found a tick on Maggie last night after she had been outside with my dad. He checked her when he took her inside and found 1 that wasn't attatched. I was rubbing underneath her chin and found 1 that was either attatched to her skin or attatched to her hair. After a lot of fighting (Maggie's a big fiesty), my husband was able to remove it and get rid of it. We use Frontline on her but I'm still freaking out! This is the first one that we found that was attatched like that. Should I call her vet just to be safe?? |
