My Matted Puppy Went To The Vet On Saturday To Have Lexi Get One Of Shots And The Vet Had Told Me That Her Hair Was All Matted.. Of Course I Freaked Out Because I Brush Her Hair Everyday...of Course I Found Out That I Wasnt Doing It Right.... I Was Only Brushing The Top Of The Hair Not From Inside... I Really Messed Up.... I Had To Have Her Shaved And Start All Over.... I Feel Like A Bad Mommy.... I Wish I Would Have Known Sooner... I Had To Go Buy All Combs Different Sizes.... And Trying To Get A Comb Through Her Hair,, Omg Its Not Easy... I Left Some Hair On Her Face... Its Just Terrible...if Anyone Has Any Advise To Give Me On This I Would Appreciate It So Much |
When I brush Maggie, I lift up a section at a time. This way I am brushing from the hair shaft out and not just the outside layer. |

If the yorkie is not all matted , it will not hurt them . I always brush Jade section by section . If yours is very matted , it is a very good idea to have the little one shaved and start all over . |

Some yorkies matt a lot easier than others too - I can imagine you brushing daily and thinking your babies hair was ok... Gizzie knots more easily than Gypsy (her hair is just great even though it's long!).. Gizzie tends to get knots on her little head and I too confess to having had to cut bits of hair from here! I now brush her head at least twice daily! Agree with doing the hair in sections - Gypsy's hair is thick and I have it thinned out now and again. Don't worry, you know now and there's no harm done!! I made this mistake with Chloe and had to have her practically shaved to the skin, which was so upsetting. I spoke with the breeder and she said next time put a few drops of Skin so Soft by Avon in her water, bathe and blow dry and then comb/brush. It should be a backward to forward motion, using one of those flat wire brushes that bend a little at the wire part. Hold the brush by placing your thumb on the handle and your fingers on the flat wood part of the brush head. That way you are in control and use the brush to get down to the skin. The hair will grow of course, but I was devastated and felt so bad because I was brushing, I thought the right way. |
I do not like brushes so I use different sizes metal combs. I do NOT start combing backwards. My strokes are from head toward tail but I pick up sections starting at the shoulder. Start coming at the end of the hair and work toward the skin. I love the greyhound combs and the little Belgian combs. Pat introduced them to me. They are so small and you can use them anywhere. Check past posts to find the best tangle managers. If a dog gets mats(as many soft-coat Yorkies do) I would advise to invest in a mat rake, cutter or whatever it is called.. It cuts and separates the mat and can save some of the coat. I prefer that to clippingthem down completely. Rescue Yorkies frequently are terribly mated and the coat has to be sacrificed. But, thank goodnes, it will grow back eventually. |
1 Attachment(s) This is the brush I use on Coco. Is this the right kind of brush? It's soft bristled, so it's not harsh. I just go from head to tail and legs. I don't lift hair by sections. Should I be?? |
If your dog mats easily, use a slicker brush (I think that's the right term). It has metal pins that are bent on the end. They get mats out very well. Just don't rake the skin with it. Do layer by layer, almost brushing side ways if you have to. If there is a mat, hold the hair at the roots between your fingers so that it doesn't pull on her skin while you work on getting it out. Have the groomer show you how to do it properly if you don't feel comfortable. But now that she is shaved, still brush her everyday so she gets used to it and you will be able to keep it mat free as it grows back in. |
I use a slicker brush now also. When I took Chachi in to be groomed I was charged extra because of the mats. |

Those Mat Rakes look dangers LOL So can anyone explain what the purpose they have. I would really like to know what are the best grooming tools that I will need since I don't have my puppy yet and getting ready to get her VERY soon. Thank you Carol |

It Took Me And My Cousin 3 1/2 Hrs To Shave Her..... I Was Scared To Take Her To A Groomer........ We Got The Hang Of It...just Learn All You Can About It So You Will Never Have To Shave Her Like I Did.... |
I use the slicker brushes on Remy. I keep him in a puppy cut but some times he still gets mats. |
