sharks in Texas???? I know that there are a lot of people from Texas on YT. :usastar: i was just looking on the news and saw that there have been shark sightings on the beaches. i believe it said that they have seen a few and someone caught a 9 ft one!!!!! I just wanted to tell all of our texan friends to be careful!!!! HAPPY 4TH OF JULY EVERYONE!!!!! |
I KNOW !! It freaks me out - I don't swim in Galveston ...I think the last time was only after MANY Berry Margueritas...I used to get on a float with my kids and one day had a HUGE fish bump me - I sent BOTH my kids flying off the float and screamed like a little girl - lol... My sons were like ...."Mom - you tried to drown us"! I told them - "hey - It was that fish or YOU" ! I got the heck out of that water and never went in again - and I'm EX-AAU Swimteam - it's not like I can't swim ! We have taken Chanel to the beach and she loved the water - but not me - I can't STAND not seeing the bottom and the ocean scares me ...give me a nice pool ! Florida just had a BAD shark attack and a girl was killed - |

Sharks scare the you-know-what outta me!! Four years ago we vacationed in Virginia Beach!! We loved it and had a wonderful time. Well after we'd been home a few days I saw where a boy was attacked by a shark and his uncle had to fight off the shark to rescue the boy. It happened in knee deep water and on the exact beach where we had swam the week before. Creepy! |

I can swim well...but don't like the water.. This shark thing is not changing my mind either. |
I'm too scared to swim in the ocean...watched Jaws one too many times. Then we move close to the Texas coast. HELLO!!!! Cabbage heads and other jelly fishes. NO THANK YOU!!!! |
Sharks really dont try to attack humans. They really only attack humans if they mistake them for prey(such as surfers are confused for seals). We just came back from sea world and we were educated on this. There are less than 100 registered shark attacks each year and most of them are bogus. There are more people killed by elephants every year than by sharks. So dont be too scared :) . I plan on scuba diving in November and would mind seeing one in the distance :D . Very far distance :p |
Sorry, but I'm not taking the chance on being mistaken for fish food. I'll just admire from a distance...same as the elephants! |
LOl Ever since Jaws I have not gone into the ocean deeper then mid calf... Not me nu uh no way forget it!!. I know statistically I have a better chance of getting eaten by an alligator or having a car crash but I will take the car crash. I have been bit by dogs, squirrels and parrots I am not adding shark to that list. |
My husband LOVES sharks. I like them too. I really do not want to be taken by surprise by one of theses creatures in the ocean though! BUt we love to see them at aquariums and shark week on the discovery channel. We we even collect shark teeth :) But they can seem pretty scary though  I think thats what makes them fascinating..... |
I love to swim, love pools, but hate when I can't see what's in the water! Last year in Mexico, my sister and I went on a banana boat. It was so much fun until they flipped us over intentionally. I freaked out and grabbed my sister and wrapped myself around her! I just heard that you shouldn't wear jewelery in the ocean because sharks can mistake it for fish gills. I kept thinking "I have a toe ring on and am going to die!" It gives me the creeps just thinking about it. I just read an article that if you are attacked by a shark that you should punch them in the face (is sensitive like a human's face) or, if worse comes to worse, try to gouge their eyes out if they're really attacking you. |
Several years ago when we were vacationing in South Padre, I looked down at the beach one morning---and there was a large group of people just below our condo. As the crowd backed up, I saw MY SON, pulling a hammerhead shark back to the water. I don't even remember how I managed to get down to the water edge so fast. I asked my son, "What In The World Are You Doing?" He said if he didn't take the shark back to the water, it would have died. Some fisherman had just caught it, and My Son, had to rescue it. So there is a God, and he protected my 12 year old son that day. My son now is now 37 and still loves animals. |

OK so i admit it after seeing jaws like WAY to many times as a child i wouldnt even go into the deep end of our pool for several years and still to this day havent been to the ocean and i think even if i went ummmm NOPE not going in not taking any chances i like all my limbs and would like to keep the attached. |
My family adores going to large aquariums. That same trip when we were in Virginia Beach we visited the aquarium there. It's a really good one. We've also been to the one in Gatlinburg, TN and several others. My favorite so far is the one in Chicago, the Shedd Aquarium. WOW!! I want to go back there sometime soon. |
I love all animals but I'm also not naive. I realize animals have defense mechanisms, I would just prefer to be the one not to instigate them. Animals get scared and hungry and they will attack no matter size, habitat, or type of animal. As a result of shark attacks, I am now afraid of the vaccum in our pool :embarasse |
Wow be careful everyone in Texas. There were a couple of bad shark attacks in Florida recently. |
Careful you guys that are in Texas. There are alot of shark sightings and shark attacks here in Florida. Just be careful... |

I almost pooped in my pants just looking at these pics!!! http://www.sharkcagediving.co.za/gallery.htm |
Stiches- I know it must have scared you to death watching your son pull that shark in- but it really is a cute story! I think the thing that those of us in Texas need to worry about more than the sharks are the flesh eating bacteria in our bays! I have been hearing a lot about that lately! Now that is SCARY! |

:p but seriously that is really scary because you can get sharks off and hit them in the nose. bacteria is just there!!! |
Sharks and jaws Many years ago, I was living in a small town in western PA and was planning a vacation to Virginia Beach for the Bicentennial. I made the mistake of seeing the first Jaws movie four days before I left. I spent 5 days on the beach there and never went near the water. For swimming, I used the hotel pool. Never been in the ocean since, not me, theres big things in there. And I live in southern California in Orange County LOL. |
i love the ocean..but deep down i have the "shark fear" . i know that more than likely i'm not going to get attacked or anything..but hey ya never know!! |
