I can't believe how smart! Wow! These little babies are so smart! Delilah is only 6 months old and she knows so much already! She totally understands me when I talk to her. I ask if she wants to go outside to pee pee and her ears perk up and she runs to the back door. I ask if she wants to play and she runs and gets a toy and throws it at me. I ask if she is hungry and she runs to where I feed her and stares up at where her plate is (yes, she eats off of her own plate because she won't dare to stick her face in a dog bowl!) She knows "sit" when I give her a treat. Now we need to work on "come" or "stop" because once she is outside, she runs around like a jackrabbit and I just can't catch her! She is my little "slippery soap!" She only comes in when she decides! Anyway, I am just so proud of her and wanted to share with you!! ;) |
awww, yes Mine amaze me all the time. Wait til she gets sooo smart she knows when to play dumb and you know it!! lol |
Aww yes they are so smart and beautiful too, what else we want in a breed:D |
Thats great! Yorkies can be pretty amazing :) |
Oh ya Yorkies are definitely smart and cheeky too! |
I agree!! Yorkies are smart!! Chloe seem to understand when I talk to her also. "Where is your toy?" Then she will go to her toy box and pick out one to play with me. If I decide to ignore her, she will place the toy closer to me, like on my toes or lap....or she will go pick out a different toy..."You wanna go potty?" Then she will run to the door....."You wanna a treat?" Of course she will start running towards me...When she see her toothbrush..she will be all excited to have her teeth brush....When my fiance and I argue..she will be hiding away from us! LOL...I just love Yorkie!!!! |
so smart! you must be good with training so the "come" and "stop" should come easily. the trick i have used on 2 past dogs plus my new little dexter is to keep treats with you when outdoors and give them a tiny bit of a treat everytime you call them and they come. practice when there are no other dogs around if you have her out at a park and slowly try it closer and closer to other dogs. i find dexter (4 1/2 months) will now not even be interested in going to play with other pups until he sits beside me and gets a treat and i tell him he can go play where he used to just take off running after anything that moved! :p i find it takes on average about 3 days to almost fully get the concept that "come" = treat...depending on how much time is dedicated to the training. i have used this on a chinese crested, lab and yorkie and had worked wonders on all 3! good luck and im sure it will be a breeze with such a smart baby! |
Just wait until your pup figures out how to get out of her kennel! Izzy loves to take her naps during the day on our sofa, so at night when she is in her kennel and we are sleeping, she somehow moves the handle and gives herself freedom so she can snooze on the couch instead. We woke up in the middle of the night to her trying to jump on our the other night, I think she was proud of her accomplishment and wanted to tell mommy and daddy. She isnt fully housebroken yet so she needs to be in her kennel at night. We've even tried tying a string to the handle so she cant lift it, and it still dosent stop her! At LEAST she hasnt had an accident during her escape. yet. I can't believe at 5 months old she could figure this out. I try not to give her the reward of my laughing or petting her when she does this, but her expression when she wakes us up is so halarious I cant stop but laugh.:p |
Thank you! Quote:

I'd be proud it I were you too. The come and stay are very important commands. Especially when your outside. Best wishes. |
Aww yes, they are smart aren't they! Delilah sounds like a real learner! But that means she has a real good Mommy teacher  Koda also knows all those commands. I especially love his toy ones. He knows ALL his toys by name! I can say "wheres monkey? wheres chicken? wheres your krackle jax?" etc....also he knows "wheres blankie"! The one we use the most though is "drop it" lol! I swear these little furkids can find anything and carry it around with them ;) |

I was raised with Keeshonds which aren't the smartest of dogs... that's probably one of the reasons I fell for yorkies! Just last night: My girl asked me to put on Lady & the Tramp, I keep her movies & dvd's on the floor in front of the tv. She stood on the box doing the little coo/tail wag... this went of for a good 5 min's. I have a combo vcr/dvd player, Lady & the Tramp was still in the dvd (it's her fav) so I stopped the video I was watching and switched over to her dvd... as soon as she heard it, she crawled up on my lap and stretched out facing the tv. I was torn which one to put up so here's another recent example: Since her show coat is gone & it's cold out, she's been wearing sweaters... she has 3 and I let her pick which one. I also put her figure 8 harness on the ground and she steps into it. My employee just told me: the other day Kylie told her the bathroom was dirty and as soon as she changed the turf... kylie did her business then gave her ankle hugs to say "thank you". ??? I assume other yorkies here give ankle hugs, right ??? |
:lol tears I'm reading all these posts and can't quite laughing at all the things our furbabies do. Lucy knows her toys by name too. I tell her to get certain ones and she runs and gets them. I tell her it's time to get dressed and she goes to her drawer where I keep her clothes and stands there waiting. I tell her she needs her bows and she jumps in my lap while I do her hair. I swear Yorkies are the smartest little things. :D :D :D I love her so much. I think God everyday for her. |
I was able to take Chloe to a puppy training class at 4 months and it made a huge difference in her behaviour. She was the star of the class...really I'm not being biased. You should see if you have a class locally. They don't really train your dog..they train you! |

Congrtas!!! And Yes Yorkies are so amazingly SMART!!!! |
T.V. I'm sorry... but you really shouldln't let your furbaby watch too much t.v. It isn't good for their mental development.... Just kidding...lol. To the O.P. give yourself a pat on the back... these dogs are smart... but it takes a sharp and intuned owner to know how smart they are!!!! |
More!! I am loving reading all of your "smart Yorkie" stories! Let's have more!! Here's one: I keep Delilah's bag that I take her places in, in the hallway closet. Whenever I open the closet to get something, she goes berzerk because she thinks I am going to take her somewhere in the car! Of course then I feel guilty so I do!! I think they are secretly training us!! |

I'm the proud parent of a Home-schooled Honor Roll Yorkie!:p But you know, he can act soooo naive sometimes, lol! Just simple little things and it's like, COME ON KODA!!! hmmm another story. ummm... Well if Koda finds one of his shirts he will hold it down with his front paws and try to put his head through the bottom to get it on, lol! Hr looks so cute doing it. Needless to say, he has never successfully got one on:p |
