Hi. I have been a proud yorkie owner for the past three weeks. My little guy is Ambrose. He is very fun and a little lazy. Love him. Anyway, now that it is colder outside, I am wondering what everyone thinks of taking him outside to potty? (Ambrose is 11 weeks.) I think I would prefer if he used potty pads this winter becaue he is so young but he is doing such a good job outside. If anything, he goes faster outside because he wants to get in out of the cold. Also, does anyone have any advice on how I can get him to poop outside? He'll go potty outside but almost always poops inside. I don't want to wait around outside forever because it is so cold. Plus it will just get colder...

Also, wish me luck on crate training. (This is probably the area I am feeling most unsure about.) I have been keeping him in my bedroom while I am at work but want to crate him to help with housetraining. This weekend, I have been crating him while I am in the shower and out of the house (only for an hour or two at a time.) It just feels so cruel! I am so worried he is unhappy and barking the whole time I am gone. Did anyone else have this issue? Do you have any advice to make crate training easier for him and me??

Welcome to you and Ambrose!!

I've crate trained all of mine. Coby loves his crate and when he sees me get my coat on, if I don't have my doggie bag or his leash, he just runs in his kennel and waits for his treat and for me to shut the door. As long as you make the crate a nice place and always treat him for going to his kennel, you shouldn't have problems. They are den animals and MOST like the security.

We potty inside and outside. Sometimes, the midwest winters are too bad for ME.

My 10 yr old Shih Tzu usually "asks" me which I'd rather him go - "outside" or "downstairs". I just say one or the other and he's off.

Congrats on your new baby. I LOVE the name! (I have an "Archibald" -- so "Ambrose" really appeals to me!). I would not let him go outside for potty at 11 weeks. I got Archie at around 12 weeks in late March 2005 and he didn't go outside for anything but vet visits until it got good and warm (we live in Chicago -- so March is still winter, so is April, May, etc ...!)

I can't speak to crate training, as Archie is piddle pad trained and was kept in an X-pen with his pad when I was at work.

Hi & welcome to YT!!! I don't crate train mine alot of people do. My SIL does & swears by it hers goes to their crate on their own when she leaves to. If you have a fenced in yard where no other dogs go potty I think it would be fine to take your pup out. Dogs usually don't get parvo in winter as it lives in the ground & if the ground is cold & froze it is dormant. Good luck with your furbaby.

Their is alot of informative people on here that give good advise you'll find youself on here for hours.

My Meka is cross trained to go outside/potty pads. Ive worked w her since 9 wks on pads and now at 8 mo's shes doing pretty well. It works for us.

Welcome to YT. How long do you need him to stay in the crate each day? Crate training is not bad, and you'll find that he'll find it to be his safe place. It just takes some time.
