Why is it bad to brush their coats when Why is it bad to brush their coats when their hair is dry? Also, if you don't bathe them everyday then when would it be ok to brush their hair? |
it breaks the hair. Use a spray in conditioner type. That's what I do when I brush Bella's. |
Thanks for that info... I brushed cody today not knowing he shouldn't be dry. |
Most people never bathe their dogs everyday..Mine get groomed 3-4 times a year. You know, I have a hard time with the brushing wet stuff...I think if they supposedly have hair like us, then why would it have to be damp to brush it..(you could use a spray bottle with water in it to dampen them), but, I brush mine dry... |
Roxy gets a bath once a week on Wed nights. |
what kind of spray conditioner do you guys use? I just use Aussie leave-in conditioner spray |

Mine look horrible and begin to smell after about 7 days.. I can't imagine how it would be after 3 months. But anyway- I always brush mine dry and haven't noticed any breakage. Both their coats are beautiful.. especially when it's clean. :p |

I use the same spray on leave in conditioner I use for myself. Infusium. I hope this isn't bad for him???? But it had worked great for me so far. I have been using it for about 4 mos. |
Buddy Splash by Cloud Star is wonderful. It is filled with natural herbs & oils. I use lavender & mint, but I just found out they have 2 new scents. Af ew squirts of that and it is so easy to brush them or comb them. It's great at getting out matts and keeps from damaging a dry coat www.cloudstar.com -- plus some places carry it |
good thread :) |
I also use the Buddy Wash/Buddy Rinse and Buddy Splash....I love it and Lil' Miss Izzie's coat is nice n shiny and she smells sooooooo purty :D |
Thanks for the information everyone! I've always brushed Marty (and now Maddie) when they are dry. I know better now. Thanks again! |
grooming spray I only have mine actually groomed 2wice a year... at a groomers. I do all the inbetween grooming. My Chloe HATES a bath but can get really stinky really fast... which if she didn't sleep by my face maybe I wouldn't notice. Anyway... I use a grooming spray to help keep matts out but I bath her one every other week. Fresh and clean products last longer than others... but there are others that I like the smell of better. Try them at the store... see what you like...they have demo sprays. |
Lacy gets bathed once a week. I brush her at least twice a day dry. |
I really don't understand how it's bad to brush them dry. Their hair is like human hair, right? You know you aren't supposed to brush your hair while it's wet because THAT causes breakage. Brushing wet hair for humans is a COMPLETE no-no. It just makes a lot more sense to brush while dry and not while wet. |

I use a leave in conditioner and brush them every other day. They hate being brushed so I try not to make it an everyday thing. If I wait longer than every other day they get mats. How does everyone brush their face? They hate having their beard and nose area combed and move around so much when I try to do that. |
I didn't knoe about brushing thier hair when it's dry either. I agree about the baths every week or at least every other week. They get to reekin pretty bad if you don't. I always use whatever conditioner i use i like dove also tresemme:p |
Belle goes to the groomers once a month or month and a half...that's when she gets bathed, in the mean time i brush her every other day, and have a spray to make her smell better when she starts getting stinky... My breeder did tell me that if i bathed her too often it makes her more stinky bc her natural oils go into like over production... so once a month it is... and she doesn't really stink either... and when she starts to the spray makes it better i think its an 8in1 spray that smells like baby powder |
In between Crystals weekly shampoo I use just a fine mist of water to spray on and brush daily. Of course I use a good conditioner after each shampoo. |
Thanks for all the information everyone. |
Meka usually gets baths every Thursday... But, I'll be giving her a bath tonite cause she's been playing pretty hard over the weekend :p I brush her hair both wet/dry... |

I dont bath my every week, my groomer has always told me its not good for them to be bathed that often, I use baby cloths that smell really good:) huggies brand) and i brush them every other day, sometime dry and some times a litle damp with a spary from dog.com called thera pet pro clean:) |
brushing coat Hmmm, I find it easier to brush when the hair is dry. They both get a bath once a week. Zanders hair does not tangle much, I use a spray leave in conditioner, body oderant. Jazzie has thicker hair (I've never cut it yet) she gets a conditioner. I notice that when I comb her hair every day, (she finds it relaxing) I feel the conditioner is still aiding in getting any tangles out quickly. I comb her hair with a brush from Pure Paws, and when I brush if there is a knot, I hold the hair, and work the knot out, so I'm not pulling on her skin or hair. |
I just spritz Bella down with the leave in conditioner, otherwise her hair frizzes like mine does. It's winter here and soooo dry. I guess that's why I do it. |
