Hallie is Scared of Simon~Help Please For awhile now when Simon gets overly excited he hacks a little which is no big deal but it is absolutely terrifying for Hallie. She runs to me and shakes uncontrollably for a good 20min. This afternoon Simon was barking at squirrels and started his hacking noise and Hallie is still scared. She won't go anywhere near Simon, she just follows me around and sits in my lap shaking or tries to crawl up my leg. It's getting worse and I don't know what to do for her. I tell her he is okay but she is avoiding him completely and has been for hours now. Anyone know what I can do for her? |
I really dont know what you can do..maybe she detects something that you cant...I feel bad for her...:( Dawn |
Aww how awful! I hope she gets better, unless she is detecting something you can't |
aww I'm so sorry! :( Maybe you should take Simon the vet...Hallie might be trying to tell you something. Best of luck! |
I agree...don't want to scare you but she just MIGHT be able to detect something you can't. I'd take him in just to have him checked out. |
I would also have him checked, Not to scare you but Minnie did the same thing when Mickey was so sick with his bladder stones, she would sniff him and whine and shake and even hid a few times. |
I'd have him checked out at the vet just incase something is wrong. |
I wish I knew what to tell ya. Maybe she does sense something with Simon.... I hope everything is ok! |
First of all, I do agree with everyone's advice that Hallie's behavior does seem like there might be something wrong with Simon. I'd say at least call and talk to a vet tech and see if they think it is serious enough for a visit. Tbone hacks sometimes when he has been running around a lot, and sometimes when he yawns real big and it seems like he needs to clear his throat. So if you do find out that Simon's hacking is normal, then I think you should ignore Hallie when she jumps at you, or even turn your back on her if she freaks out. She will catch on real soon that you think it is ok and it isn't something to be afraid of. She is a smart cookie. |
i too thought that hallie might be able to sense something you can't. I'd get Simon checked out. If after that you find that simon is fine, i'd start to ignore Hallie's freak feast when Simon does this behavior. By telling her its ok and picking her up or attending to her neediness you are letting her know its ok to act like that. she'll continue to do it and it will get progressively worse, like its starting too. |
What about just ignoring her and reassuring him in front of her. Let her see that it is OK to hug him. I was taught if a dog is scared of something to ignore the behavior...don't cuddle or even pet cause it says to them "I knew it, it's a big bad bear"....in fact do just the opposite, dance sing and be all happy. They follow your lead. Check on him and walk away. I hope this doesn't sound cold, cause that is not my intent. |
hmmm I don't know. I was going to say sit on the floor where you can be with both of them. Thinking that if she needs you to feel better that if you are on the floor with Simon she would come around him too. (shrugging) otherwise i'm sorry I don't know because my initial thought seems to be the opposite of everyone elses. Although I did have the same thought that she is picking up something going on with Simon. I'm sorry, not much help here, i wish I had the answer. Big hugs and happy thoughts coming your way |
Sometimes Layla will hack when she gets too excited... i think, like everyone else does, that you need to ignore (I KNOW>... SO hard) her when she is upset.. because when you cuddle her you are telling her her behavior generates attention... so she will keep doing it... maybe after he hacks and she gets scared.. can you intice them back together with a favorite treat?? maybe sit on the floor and call them both over with this super great treat and praise them for being such good girl and boy :) i'm sure she is so upset that something is bothering him. poor girl.. she's had a rough couple days! I remmeber another member who was having probelms because since her pups got her cast off and walked funny (or something like that) her other pup wont' even eat in the same room as the other one.. so they can sense when something is wrong. |

It is not my intention to scare you, but hacking or coughing can be symptomatic of congestive heart failure, something my last two Yorkies have had. It is quite treatable if caught early. Another thing that comes to mind is collapsing trachea, another problem we've had here. It wouldn't hurt to take Simon to the vet for a check up. Sometimes dogs will fear and/or attack a sick dog in their midst -- it dates back to the pack mentality and survival of the fittest and all that. Please let us know what your vet says. |
