Weak stomache don't read!
 

OK my Mothers yorkie mix, Bedford, is 4 yrs old. My mother feeds him everything she eats during the day and a McDonalds cheesburger for dinner. Hes only had 1 bone in hes life and it made him aggressive so Mom wont give him more.
Last night Bedford started barking like crazy, she goes out to see and there he goes chasing a rabbit. Mom gets Dad and when he gets out there Bedford is quiet. They finally find him.....EATING the Rabbit! He's ripped the Rabbit open and has eaten most of hes insides leaving head,feet and tail. Mom is totally grossed out and upset her baby was so mean to another anmial. I'm mad they didn't let him have his fill and tell me how much he left as not edible. Of course we will watch to see hes OK but I doubt he'll have any problems, he just had the best meal of his life!

YUK !!! we'll i can't say anything my little Haley cases mice.... and sometimes she gets them and does the same thing .....

wow, yorkies were bread as ratters...definitely some of those instincs coming out! it doesnt mean hes a bad or evil dog...just doing what is ingrained deep inside of him ;)

He ate a rabbit...that is disgusting. I wonder what diseases that rabbit had...

Hmmmm... dont really know how to respond to that one. I mean, if your mom's raising him to be a hunter or killer dog - then Im sure that was probably "the best meal of his life" :( Whatever works for ya'll I guess...........................

I would definately be grossed out if my dogs did that! a natural instinct i know, but....eeeeeeewwwww! LOL:p (plus im a veggie and preparing the dogs chicken makes me feel sick!! lol):rolleyes:

Well, I would be glad that he is eating a rabbit and not the other way around.
Terrier is still a terrier.

I'd be watching him just incase the rabbit had any diseases. It is a natural instinct even if we think it's disgusting. Piper chased my neighbors rabbit once, and he never leaves my side when we're outside. I started yelling at him, or we might have had dead rabbit too. Yucky.

Well, with all the crap she's been feeding him, I'm sure he was yearning for something proper in his diet. Our dogs were bred to hunt small game, and raw meat, bones and organs are what is best for our little carnivores. Sad for the rabbit, but that's life... I wouldn't purposely feed mine another live animal (although Lacy goes crazy when she sees a rabbit...), but she's fed a raw diet to make up for that

I wonder what Bedford's cholesterol level is?

Wow! I hope the furbaby does not get any negative outcome from eating the
rabbit. It would be good to just observe the furbaby for a couple of days.

Other than to say....your mother should not be feeding human food to her dog. That is HORRIBLE for him and so very wrong to do that. She is killing her dog by doing that. Also, like MyFairLacy said, he probably wanted something good in his diet and Yorkies are terriers...that's what they do.

I would honestly be more concerned about feeding human food all the time than the rabbit. My dog eats raw rabbit daily (and although that's different...it's still rabbit), but you can bet he sure doesn't eat a CHEESEBURGER! Sorry to go off, but that is just horrible IMO.

Wow! He really followed his ancestry - ratting and chasing rabbits like back when they were used for those purposes in England in the 1800's!!!

Yeah, I would try to tell your mother about not doing the cheeseburger thing. There's a lady I see in the morning who has a Jack Russel and all his life, her husband fed him human feed, from hot dogs to chips to cookies and now the poor dog has diabetes.

Lacy normally gets raw rabbit and venison most of the time. Anytime I'm eating something bad for me (pizza, hamburger, chile cheese fries..) she begs and begs. LOL I always tell her that it will make her fat and that at least I have a lot more surface area for the fat to spread out on LOL I just could not feed her something like that. But now if I'm eating a grilled chicken breast or even a piece of steak, I might give her a tiny bit...but if it's unhealthy for me, she SURE isn't getting any

I just started doing the same thing if I'm eating a chicken breast I give them a TINY TINY little shave of it...like just started it this week. But they don't get any of the outside part at ALL...that has grease and salt and stuff on it. And Kiwi gets peanut butter (a tiny bit) morning and night with her meds, but other than that, seriously, my dogs have not had ANY human food. If it's bad for us, I can't imagine how horrible it would be for their little selves. Pizza and hamburgers, OMG, I couldn't even fathom feeding that to them. Kobi doesn't even beg because he doesn't know how good it would be, but Kiwi does because I think she used to get fed crap before I rescued her...but she's better now :thumbup: :p

Natural instinct and all, I know....but yuck! My babies chase rabbits and squirrels every chance they get, but thankfully the closest they've ever come to catching one was when Lucky got ahold of I assume the rear end of a rabbit that didn't quite make it through the chain link fence fast enough. We heard it squeal!:eek: My hubby got Lucky to "leave it", but not without a little rabbit fur in his mouth. So far as the table food and McD's cheeseburger...:eek: :eek: :eek: . My guys get next to none so far as table food goes and Lucky could still use to lose a pound or so.

The rabbit is much better for him than the cheeseburger, as many have already said. My mom used to feed her Yorkie mix Teddie everything she ate (cookies, chips, bacon, etc.) and Teddie got very fat and developed a back problem because she couldn't get around well. I sat down with my mom and explained to her that Teddie was going to die if she kept doing it, and she agreed to let me help. I started her out on an excellent low-fat kibble, which she denied at first (after eating all that junk), but after mixing some chicken broth in she ate it all. She is now at a healthy weight, she has gone from 25 pounds to 18...:eek: She looks and acts so much healthier, and the vet said that probably saved her life...

The rabbit is just instinct...mine would kill and eat rats and rabbits if I let them. Someone just the other day was begging me to take care of their hamster for them for the weekend, and I just kept laughing. If I took care of a hamster, between 6 yorkies and 3 cats, that thing would not survive an hour lol.

I feed mine healthy things that I eat too...like carrots, fruit (except grapes of course), vegetables, yogurt, lean steak, grilled chicken, etc. I don't see any reason why they can't have those things. Like Michele said, I wouldn't feed them anything that's not healthy for ME either.

Wow, that is a pretty dramatic weight loss! My parents yorkie was overweight for a while..weighed the same as Lacy and he's got a much smaller frame. He was a little over 7lbs and is now down to 6. I know what difference only one pound can make on a small dog so 7 is quite a bit.

Well it IS natural instinct for a dog to go after small game. And as mentioned earlier I would much rather Oscar eat a rabbit than eat a Mickey D's Cheeseburger! Heck, Oscar chased a deer out of our yard once...if he had caught it I don't know what he would have done with it...LOL. A month or so ago, Rhonda's Bailey was mentioned on a thread as quite the rabbit hunter...and it is good for them. I have heard that rabbits can carry parasites but are safe after the weather has turned cold??? Here is Bailey with his "prize"...she saw him in the yard and snapped the photo thru the window...He was proud of himself! But I think in this case, he took the "prize" away from his brother...Toto the cat!

It is natural instinct to go after smaller animals, I just worry if there were to be a big dog, would your little one go after the big dog???
These little guys thinks they are BIG BIG.....
I just had a little poodle killed by another dog....He too thought he was a BIG DOG......so let me tell you, I would sure be worried if your dog went after a big dog....JMHO Natural or not....

So sorry about your poodle...that has to be hard! Oscar has been around big dogs in the past and never tried to go after them...not sure WHY he went after the deer unless it was just because it RAN and he gave chase. He has never been agressive to other dogs or cats.

Why oh why didn't I pay attention to the heading - Someday I'll listen - I only feed Baxter dry dog food and some dog bones - He's had some cheerio's once or twice - but that's it.
