How did you pick your Yorkie?

Just wanted to see how others have made the decision to get the Yorkie(s) they own now.

In my case, I found two yorkies 200 miles away from my house and 50 miles apart from each other. Rocky was the first one I took a look at and right away I knew he was the one, but I forced myself to take a look at the other pup which was an hour away.
Rocky was just so sweet and small and just special, and he smelled like a cookie. I just new he was mine, and 3 weeks later I was able to take him home, and first thing he did when we came home was doing number 1 on a weewee pad I had in his little corner.

The memories are so weet:)

THis is the first pic when I first found him.

Marty had the most personality out of his litter. He was SO active and just couldn't wait to give kisses. He was definitely the one for me!

With Maddie, I read her story and saw her cute pics and just wanted more than anything to give her a happy life and a loving home.

s13silviagirl 11-14-2007 06:37 AM

awwww what a sweet story!

I knew Turbo was mine from the moment I held him. A friend had told me about him, and I went to look at him...took him home that night.

Callie I went to look at on a puppy fever bing outlet (I blame all of you on here showing me pics of the cute Yorkie pups!!!) and saw her...fell in love, begged a pleaded the hubby....now she is a littl fuzz ball that runs like a little bear through our house!

and yes, hubby is sooo totally whopped by them!

Cocoa's Momma 11-14-2007 06:37 AM

I picked Cocoa out because he was the only chocolate in his litter and I thought that was neat and different. He also was the most playful and the biggest one. I definitely didn't pick the runt of the litter, lol. Now he is almost a year old (Dec. 15th) and weighs about 12 pounds. I wouldn't have him any other way;)

I was visiting a girlfriend in Little Rock when we passed a business called ARKY Barky....
"what's that? Let's go see"

The place had closed and relocated, but I could not get it out of my mind. I called when I got back to Memphis and asked if they had any yorkies (was in the market for one for daughter). I also asked how much they were.
"We don't quote prices on the phone."

So on my next visit I got girlfriend to take me to the new location.

"do you have a little girl"

Yes, sit down in this rocking chair.

They brought her to me, I looked at her, she looked at me, and went for my hoop earring to chew on it. That pretty much did it, but still I walked away.

The rest of the day was a blur. Lunch at some awful chinese buffet, going here and there. All day the words "A 100.00 deposit will take her off the floor and you can finance her." rang in my head.

Later in the day, I whipped out my ATM card, called and put the deposit down.

Have her ready to ride in the morning, we are headed back to Memphis.

The next day she was placed behind my neck up on the arm rest of the car. She put her little head on my shoulder, and looked at me as if to say "Are you my new Mommie?'

I told her that I was the grandmother, but I would love her, as her Mommie would.

My daughter had NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO idea. When I got home I had the tiny package behind my back in one hand.

I spoke to her, then brought my hand around.

Amber starred at my hand to see if it was a toy or real. Mika moved, and my daughter's jaws flew open. She's yours, I said.

My daughter reached for her and plopped down on the kitchen floor with a OH MY GOD MOM!!!!!!!!!!!

It's been lover ever since.

i was researching for months on what type of dog would be perfect for me. once i decided on a yorkie, i searched tons of breeders in ontario looking for the perfect little one. there were tons of cute puppys, but none the "jumped out" at me. i was also very concerned with getting a pup from a breeder that i felt i could trust.

then one day i was looking at pictures on an online advertising site and saw my little boy! i knew he was the one for me right away. all the time i spent researching breaders was thrown out the window as he was being adopted out by a young couple that didnt realize the time and effort a little pup needs and felt he deserved a better home. i was a little worried for not meeting the breeder or seeing the conditions my little guy was brought up in, but he wiggled his way into my heart and made himself a permanent home there! :) so far he has been healthy, happy and was very well socialized, so i know i made the right decision. wouldnt change him for the world!

LillieDoodle 11-14-2007 06:50 AM

When I first started looking I did some Google searches and came upon a breeder in FL. Since I was moving my sister down there at the same time some puppies were available, it was perfect. So on the way back from moving my sister - I stopped at the breeder's house and met all of the dogs. I got first pick of the females and I picked the one that was dosile - not the one that was jumping at my feet - she is now my Little Lillie and she is so perfect and such a pleasant dog. It took 6 months before she was ever vocal and now she is only vocal on demand. So when I wanted another one - I went to the same breeder as I can trust her and her puppies and that is how I got Gracie. Now I am looking at trying to add a third and will definitely get one from a breeder on this site. I wish I knew of this site prior to ever purchasing- I could have been a better purchaser.

Here is a picture of the 3 pups we went to look at.

We decided we liked the one on the left or the one in the middle. When we went to see them, the 2 we liked were playing with each other and not paying too much attention to us--just being adorable puppies and having fun. The third one (the one we didn't think was as cute in the picture) was just looking at us and then came over and sat between my 2 girls feet and looked up at them!!! :p That was it for us!! We put our deposit down on our little Bella that day! We didn't pick our Yorkie---she picked us! It was a great day!:)

We went to a backyard breeder (don't yell, I know that is bad now). I had 600.00 to spend and there was an add for pups starting at 600.00. I called and found they were close by and made arrangements to see the 2 pups they said were 600.00. I met with the dtr of the lady I had talked to and she sd she only had 1 pup and it was for 650.00. I know I should have left right then esp since it looked like she had 2 hernias, but Gypsy looked me in the eyes and I fell in love. We gave her 600.00 cash and a ck for 50.00 and took her home with us. She had some health problems (she did have hernias but they went away on their own so I was lucky) after I got her but she is now very healthy and is the love of my life.
She is a quiet thing for the most part and loves to cuddle, just what I was looking for.

Graleyne 11-14-2007 10:53 AM

I did not pick Susanah. Susanah picked me. I spent two weeks at my breeder's home doing some work with/for her. Out of the yorkie babies she had I thought Susanah was the ugliest little thing (sshhh don't tell her I said that). In fact, she had several people come to see puppies while I was there and I tried my best to sell her TWICE.

Well, little miss persistent kept following me around calling me Mommy. I kept telling her I wasn't her mommy and she kept telling me yes I was. Finally I was sitting on the floor playing with another little puppy that was getting ready to head to the airport when Susanah climbed in my lap, yawned, stretched out and went to sleep. I quietly whispered, "Alright, I am your mommy." She opened one eye and looked at me like, "See? I told you so!"

Happy B Day to ME!

Well first my husband asked me what I wanted for my birthday.;) (hit him up big time) I told him I wanted a Yorkie.(Happy birthday to me) My mil has a boy and he is just wonderful.
Not two seconds later he is on the phone with his Cousin in NY who is big into pet care and knows all the breaders around there and she was abel to get me a little girl for only $600. ( I have hubby trained so well :D ) Needless to say I was thrilled and Bella was just perfect. Bella may live in ME but she has that NY attitude for sure! Anyhow my cousin in law is now like my fav and we are always talking about our pets it's awsome!
I have to say I married into a great family!:p

PennysMum 11-14-2007 12:53 PM

The place I work at took part in a big rescue of Yorkies-- 30+ dogs of all ages from pups right up to ones that were 15 years old or older.

In the initial group, there were six puppies that were all about the same age. Five out of the six were little, adorable things with standy-up ears and fatter little noses. Then there was one puppy who was bigger than the rest by a LOT, had a pointier nose, and whose ears did a kind of one-up, one-down flip-flop. She was a very outgoing puppy, in love with every person she met, and feared nothing despite having come out of a pretty bad situation.

People would come in to look at the puppies, and immediately eliminate her from their lists of potentials, saying things like, "She's too big!" and "She has an ugly nose!" All the while, I was growing closer and closer to her... and eventually, she wound up being the pick of the litter-- I got sick of people being so blind to how wonderful she was, and I took her home before any of her "cuter" littermates got their forever homes. :D

I think she's turned out to be beautiful too.;)

Well, I found my first dog - a Yorkie - just a week and a half ago! I had the choice of three males. One was much chubbier, going for cheaper than the other two. He was cute, but I was looking for a smaller-sized yorkie.

I couldn't believe how tiny they were (at 4.5 weeks old). I took a few minutes to hold them (they were a little shaky), talked with the breeder, etc. Finally my sister said, "get the smaller one!" And a few minutes after that, I looked down and the little guy we had chosen had fallen asleep in my arms!!! I think it was a mutual decision once we had picked him; he had felt comfortable and stopped shaking!

I pick him up on December 16! I'll post a thread and pics...!

KathyinCali 11-14-2007 01:28 PM

I visited my breeder and sat on the floor for about 2 hours playing with 6 Yorkies. I was all set for a male and there were 5 males and 1 girl...They were all wonderful but then Lucy crawled onto my lap and started licking me I didn't even stop to see if she was male of female. She chose me and I'm the luckiest lady in the world and a better person for having her in my life :)

It was a semi - surprise!

:p Well, my 3 year anniversary with my bf was 9/7 and I completely splurged on our anniversary. I did that because I knew he wasnt doing to good financially and we deserved it anyway. LOL.

Well we decided to stay in a nice Hotel in NYC (yes i am from NY, LOL). So anyway, as we were driving in manhattan we saw an older man with a dog. at the time i didnt know it was a yorkie because i always figured yorkies were the golden tan color but this was smaller and all black. (now I know that is what the look like as puppies!) and the puppy was walking with suck flair that i yelled out like a mad woman, OMG I WANT ONE OF THOSEEEE!!

So that was the end of that. Like 2 weeks after that we go into a pet store and I see the same breed of dog, all black and cute as freaking hell! and again I yell out OMG i want that. and then my bf is like we will see if i get you one. he said he knew of a breeder in new jersey that can get him a healthy puupy so i was like okay.

Forget it!! I was nagging and being a pain in the butt about it until 9/7, exactly a month later did my bf bring my baby to me.

he stepped out of the car and opened the passanger side and takes a small little box with the top open and yelled out oh yeah this is a cart part i got. I am like oh ok and ignored him because i was talking to his mom. he came up to me with the puppy 's little paws and head out the box and says happy late anniversary! I completely freaked out and I cried LMFAO !! I took her out of the box and said hello and she gave me a slurrpy kiss, i almost died! :) :D

I love her so much, she has made ALL MY DAYS SO MUCH BRIGHTER!

Sorry it was so long, it is my favorite story!

ARCHIE 11-14-2007 01:52 PM

What a sweet story everyone has and so much meaning behind them.

I took a vacation week to search for a Yorkie. It had been 2yrs since
the passing of my terrier and I was determined a new pet was what
I needed. My daughter and 3yr old granddaughter went with me.
It was my birthday also and that was going to be my present. We
went upstate to a breeder a friend recommended but she had none
at the time and I was not waiting. We stopped by a friend's house
who knew I was looking and she mentioned a place called American
Breeder's not far from her. Went went and it was a store so we went
in. I spotted him immediately. He was the largest of four and they
took him out but he wanted to go back in the crate. I took him in
the room where we could visit and he ignored me and went to Nicole
giving her puppy kisses. I held him and he smelled like a puppy does
and there was no way he was going back into that crate. He came with
a vet check up. He threw up on me on the way home. Nicole named him Buddy on the way home, because he was going to be her little buddy she
said. They had him for 4wks before I bought him. After finding YT I realized the store was a broker because Buddy is from Hungary and they imported him to America.
After knowing what I now know I was one lucky lady buying him from
a pet store. He is perfectly healthy with no issues at all. Except for his
size. That's fine with me. That's why I picked him out in the first place,
because he was bigger. That was my lucky day the day I found Buddy.

I had always wanted a yorkie since I lived at home with my mother, so finally I decided it was time. I went to so many places (all pet shops :( ) They were either sickly or too much money. when I say I looked boy do I mean I looked! I was dragging my kids nd hubby almost everyday. I was so discouraged because the ones I did like were 1600-2200 and I was just not spending that much. I would get back in the car and be so sad LOL my daughter told me...dont worry mom our baby is out there we just havent found her...maybe she isnt born yet. I put the looking on hold until a friend said to check out this one store. when I walked I i noticed him right away! i held him, played with him and loed on him then my hubby said how much are you asking? she said 1400 :( He said if you want him hes yours (my bday gift) he was a boy I had wanted a girl lol. I looked at him and couldnt let him go! I put the deposit on him on monday and he came home on my birthday 3 days later.

shooter's mom 11-14-2007 02:30 PM

How we got Shooter was we had a golden retriever and it past away at 11 yrs old. When that happened I said I was never getting another dog. About a month had past and I saw a yorkie on tv. That was what I wanted. Done some research on them and told hubby I wanted one for Christmas and he did not know what a yorkie was lol! A friend of mine aunt raises yorkies and she had 2 males left. Hubby did not want to go with me to see them but I made him and the lady brought out the 2 and the largest one crawled upon hubby's arm and was bitting his fingers and then went to sleep on him and that is all it took. When we got him home he never cryed or whimpered it was like I'm suppose to be here and this is my house. So I guess we were chose by him. He is 2 years old now and he was the best Christmas present I could ever have.

I had been out of my parents house, who have a Yorkie, and I was missing my fur sister like crazy. I hounded and hounded hubby for a furbaby. He kept saying we couldn't afford a $1,000 dog. I was so upset I called my mom and she said why don't you call the lady we got Baby from and see what she has, she will probably let you make payments. I got so excited! I again asked hubby and he said if she would allow us to make payments then I could get one. So I called the breeder up and told her who I was and then asked if she had any for sale. She said she had 2 older dogs for sale, Tilly and Baby (Tilly's mom). I didn't want another dog around named Baby so I said I would be interested in looking at Tilly, which I kept thinking she was saying Chili. :p She kept saying she is older over and over so I assumed she was like 10 years old, she was three. So the next day we went to look at Tilly and fell in love with her. We lived in an apartment that didn't allow pets so we went every weekend for 2 months while we were apartment hunting and took Tilly to my parents and we would stay the weekend there with Tilly. :) She grew instantly attached. The breeder couldn't believe how she acted towards us. She could see the love. Well we found pet friendly housing and well you guys know the rest....hehe Here is Tilly one weekend when we brought her to my parents. She had longer hair then.

marycrank83 11-14-2007 05:20 PM

About 5 months ago.....
My 19 year old son asked his gf, of one year, what she wanted for her bday and she wanted a puppy. (they had been having problems and i think this was my sons way to hold on to her!) He got a dog book and togather they looked at different breeds and they decided on a yorkie. So my son looked in the newspaper and took his gf to pick him out. She wanted a girl but they were 200.00 more so he told her it would have to be one of the 600.00 boys.(he works full time and lives at home) They brought it straight to my house and i took one look at "Romeo" and fell in love. I begged them to let me puppy sit while they went out but they took him with them. The next day i drove my son nuts telling him to stop over with the puppy!!!! I was even text messaging him while they were at the vet!!! Well i got to see him every day for a bit. I was thinking about him every minute and missing him!! THEN they broke up 4 days later and she gave the puppy back even though my son told her to keep him but she was involved with another boy and that was not going to work for the other boy!!!!
I was playing with the puppy in our front yard while they were breaking up but didnt know it!!!! She stormed off and walked right past the puppy not even looking at him!!! and off she drove. Nick picked the puppy up and said MOM do you want him??? I was so confused until he explained it all.... we renamed him Oliver. I was so afraid they would get back togather and he would give Ollie back to her but he promised me (even though his heart was broken) there was NO WAY!!!! My son likes to call him HIS dog!!! I feel so lucky that i did get him -- i would of never of gotten a yorkie and knew so little about them but they are the BEST!!! He is a huge joy to us. This girl has stopped by 3 times in the past several months and she doesnt even acknowledge Ollie. It makes me feel ill that she almost would of had my baby!!!

Love at first sight

I had wanted a Yorkie for some time and finally made the decision to find a breeder. When I called the first breeder on my list, we hit it off right away. She had three pups available. Archie was the littlest and the breeder's favorite. He sat on my chest, looked me straight in the eyes and gave me little kisses on my chin and neck. He chewed on my rings. He peed on the floor AND on his piddle pad. He attacked the piddle pad and growled at it. I fell in love right then and there. He was my puppy. Took him home at nearly 12 weeks and continue to be madly in love with this ferocious baby doll. :aimeeyork :heart48:

defient 11-15-2007 12:08 AM

I had wanted a yorkie for years but for different reasons wasn't able to get one. So I was finally ready I started looking for breeders within driving distance from me. Made a few calls to set up times to go have a look. After getting to one of the breeders I got in the floor to play with the puppies...one little girl comes over and gets in my lap, looks at me, then falls fast asleep. I've had her close to 2 years now.
Oh and even as I type this she is in my lap...asleep. Thats my baby lol

I had wanted a yorkie for at least 6 years. My sister called and told me she found two Yorkies. The first thing I said was "are they girls" she said no boys but Jen you have to see them. I proceeded to tell her that Jason would never allow a third dog. She took pics with her phone and sent them to me. The one she liked had ears down and was bigger. I did get Jason talked into going to see them. She even called him after we met them and he said we were not getting another pet that just eats and poops. Almost a day later he went and let me get one. No begging required. I wanted the smaller one when I saw them, not the bigger one my sister thought I would want. However, when we got there I felt bad for the one being left behind and started to second guess which one to take home. I got on the floor and was playing with them both. The tiny one went and took something from his bigger brother and then came over and laid down by me to chew it. I knew he was the right one for sure. That is Winstin's story. Jason just adores him and tells me at least once a week that he should have bought me a Yorkie a long time ago. I think we will have a Yorkie for the rest of our lives. Although I never wanted a male dog, he has been the best thing ever. I fell in love with him and forgot he was even a boy. I have such a different opinion of male dogs now.:yorkiesar Here is one of the first pics I took of him.

Anna Lou 11-15-2007 04:26 AM

Zoey was brought to me, on a day when I wasn't expecting to get a new yorkie. Work associates of my husband offered the runt of the litter to him and we jumped at the chance. Eight years ago we went to get one and Ziggy was also the tiniest turned around and sat her butt on my shoe. She still sits like that now.

abbie's mom 11-15-2007 05:12 AM

I had wanted a Yorkie most of my life; but finanacially, just couldn't ever seem to swing it. Well, in 2005 I did some web design work and, deciding I wasn't getting any younger, determined this was my Yorkie $$$ !

I was set on having a female, so dh and I visited a local breeder who had 5 girls and one boy from one litter! While I was playing on the floor with the pups, one little girl just came up bold as brass, crawled into my lap, and fell asleep! Well, that was it for me, of course. I had already been eyeing her closely; because her little face just struck a :note: in my heart.

If we'd had the funds, we'd have purchased two, because another little girl 'chose' my hubby. Everytime he would stand still, she would come and lay her little head on his shoe!!

Thanks for the stories everyone!
